    This is the most helpful video on the internet. This has been driving me nuts forever, always had to turn the volume up to hear dialog and then turn it down every darn time there was any sort of sound effect. Used to hurt my ears, finally able to watch a movie and actually enjoy it without having to toggle the volume constantly. Thank you!!!

  • @notthere83
    @notthere83 Před 4 lety +20

    For some visual feedback while tweaking the settings, I would recommend installing the "Orban Loudness Meter" and looking at the "ITU BS.1770 Momentary" meter (and maybe the one directly below). Don't forget to hit the "ON" switch at the bottom before. ;)
    Because of this, I realized how threshold works and that an even lower threshold was better for what I wanted. (-30 dB)
    And attack/release is especially important with moments like in the Matrix. I think that the attack should be really short but release very long so that while the music in the club is playing, the compressor doesn't keep increasing/decreasing the volume.

  • @notthere83
    @notthere83 Před 10 lety +101

    It's pathetic that people have to do this sort of thing instead of movies being mixed in a more reasonable manner. Sure, action that would be louder in real life should be a bit louder in the movie as well but come on!

      +notthere83 movies are mixed for high quality speakers, if you set up your TV with decent 5.1 than the mix is usually perfect, the problem is when your wearing headphones or live in an aprtment

    • @TeamPhlegmatisch
      @TeamPhlegmatisch Před 7 lety +10

      Its because of movie rips from blue ray or dvd which have a 5.1 system, when you then watch it on 2.1 , thats because of the bad mix. Not because hollywood is too stupid to mix it from the start :-)

    • @notthere83
      @notthere83 Před 7 lety +16

      Right... did you also know that it's because the voices are usually in the center channel but since a 2.1 system doesn't have a center channel, it gets mixed in and so you can't control them separately any more?
      Well, I do because I learned a bit about mixing a number of years ago.
      That doesn't change the fact that by default, the levels of voices are much lower than anything else and that that's a stupid fucking thing to do. You shouldn't have to turn the center box of a 5.1 system all the way up (or the rest down) just so you can hear people talk properly.

    Can someone who knows about how movie audio is edited explain to me why all movies have this problem now? I haven't found an explanation online that could explain to me why they decide to do this. Do they consider this to be more realistic? Because if so it really sucks for everyone. I can enable Loudness Equalization in Windows to fix this for all movies but I also play video games and Loudness Equalization really messes up the game audio, which is almost always well balanced for all games, unlike movies.

      WH1T3 yeah. I’m stuck with having to enable Loudness Equalization each time i want to watch a movie. And then disable it for everything else: music, games. I thought I could program a script so I could do this in one click but apparently windows does not make that easy. It’s especially bad on Netflix. Whenever I’m watching something on Netflix I have to put the volume at 100% just to be able to hear dialogue. Then all of a sudden a stupid phone rings or the action starts or a dog barks in the movie and my eardrums are gone. With loudness equalisation I can put it at 50% and all sounds tend to stay at the same volume.

    Under a posting on Reddit titled "Volume levels are very inconsistent when watching a film." from a year ago it's suggested to "Go to AC3Filter options > mixer tab and set the voice option slider to 0" if you're having this problem in MPC. And a quick Google search brought up another more detailed suggestion if that doesn't work just search this "How to: Increase or normalize volume in Media Player Classic". Not sure if any of that will work for you because I don't use MPC, but hope it helps.

      When one boost Centre channel volume one also boosts all of the audio that comes out of that channel. The answer is to get a well balanced AVR with decent resistors and capacitors! Sadly Japanese AVRs tend to use off-the-shelf resistors and capacitors! That's why Japanese AVRs will always sound mediocre.

    i simply can not watch movies on my computer without this. your video is the only video that i could find that properly explains the fix to this issue. i know there was another years ago not sure where. what i will say however is that if you have an older computer that by using the compression it does put some added strain on your cpu for it to perform this. On my old 2005 computer while i was watching movie over my lan the compression would cause my old computer to bog down if i used to much of the compression lol. i dont understand all the technical reasoning behind it. anyway thats a very outdated computer. thanks so much. i can finally watch a movie without waking the whole world up.

    Still no good.
    So will look for Dynamic Range Compression in the setting..sure I have seen that, and ignored it not knowing what it meant.
    Not all Blu-ray movies have any problems with the whispering vocal, so I mainly blame the people who made the film at this uneven audio level.
    The movie that is the problem is KRAMPUS starring Adam Scott (2015).
    No problem at all with older movies on DVD or Blu-ray.

      When a movies audio is mastered, it is usually mastered for a theatrical release. When listening on a Blu-ray, one hopes it's been remastered for a Blu-ray release. Of course having a decent AVR with quality resistors and capacitors helps. Unfortunately most Japanese AVRs tend to use off-the-shelf resistors and capacitors. Quality cables also help. And even though a quality poweramp doesn't actually improve the sound quality. The extra boost on a signal might help the dialogue to sound clearer.

    It shouldn't be up to us to fix its bad producing stop music in the movies they want the music to drowned out all the dialogue so you can't tell the movie sucks CZcams does the same thing they think you want to hear music on every video instead of the dialogue what the video is intended about if I want to listen to music. Turn on the radio or put in a CD

    Why do they even bother having background music in a film, my grandad said he never heard any music at Dunkirk.

    It's funny that when I "pirate" a movie and watch it on my laptop instead of a streaming service, I'm given an overall better experience.

    So of course this is for pc. I have constatine of blue ray, and watching it on that on my tv its like action is loud and talking is quiet, and is really fucking annoying especially for living in an apartment.
