Recharging a completely dead battery

  • If you run across a battery that is so dead it won't even kick on your battery charger, I discovered a little trick. All you need is a somewhat good battery (one that will kick on your charger) and hook it to the dead battery, then hook up the charger. I was able to restore my golf cart batteries this way, but this would also work on a vehicle battery.

    This matched my scenario exactly. 8V golf cart batteries dead, but over the winter (I am a bit further north than Texas). Smart chargers would not recognize the battery, but the 6V setting on a "dumb" charger worked perfectly to get the voltage up high enough so the charge controller would recognize the correct battery voltage. All batteries working now. Thanks for posting. This is still a useful resource.

    Mine was completely dead(I needed 2 volts for the charger to work). I tricked it by hooking up a Jump start battery(too weak on it's own to crank it). It let the smart charger do it's thing.

    How long did you have to leave the the dead battery connected to the good battery before it woke it up enough to kick on the smart charger?

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  Před 5 lety +2

      it was basically instant since the charger can't tell if it's hooked up to the "good" or the "bad" battery

      @@WJHandyDad thanks for the reply. So did you rewire the jumper (short cart battery cables) hot to hot, negative to negative then put charger on good battery? I'm working on an ezgo that has 4 batteries that will take a charge, 2 that won't. With 4 charged batteries the main cart charger won't kick on.

      yes, hot to hot, ground to ground 1 good battery and 1 dead battery. Then hook up the single battery charger. Once the "dead" battery is good, go to the next dead battery. Once they are all "good" then your golf cart charger should work to finish the charge.

    Texas is abnormally hot to start with

    What do you mean "wont kick on your battery charger??" I'm a mechanic and have worked on cars nearly 40 years. Its not the job of a battery to "kick on a charger " very confusing. What are you trying to say?

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  Před 4 lety +7

      if the voltage of the battery drops too low the charger won't turn on

      Question for you both if you don't mind...Was at work, called wife to have her put the battery charger on an old car (1993 oldsmobile)
      we were selling. It was completely dead. She started at 10 amp...nothing but a dim dome light, had her turn it to 40 amp...got a door chime but wouldn't crank...so I told her to put it on booster really quick 200 amp and see if it'll even crank....well it started up immediately. I then had her turn the charger back down to 40amp and leave it for about 30 min while the vehicle just stayed idling. (this is where I think I messed up). She went inside for about 20 minutes came back outside and the car had died and white smoke was coming from the dash. She turned the key off and unhooked battery charger. She tried to see if it would start back up but nothing. With the car running, would the alternator and battery charger at 40 ramps been way too much and caused an internal battery failure causing the vehicle to die and not sure where the smoke came from. I'm at work and haven't been home yet to troubleshoot it myself. I like your thoughts a out where to start on the troubleshooting. Thank you

      once the car started, you should remove the battery charger. Some of them are set up to compensate for when the car is running, but some aren't. It would be impossible for us to guess why she had smoke coming from the dash. I just uploaded a video on how to check if your battery on the vehicle is dead and in need of replacement versus if you have a parasitic draw that is draining the battery in between drives. Check it out and see if it helps you.

      @@WJHandyDad yeah when she told me it died and was smoking when she came back outside, my first thought was, should have told her to disconnect the charger. Completely my fault, it's an older Schumacher 200amp. Really nice but no protection built in I don't believe. Thank you. I'll check it out.

      You have to try and trick the charger same as the solar system anything below 10 volt won't start the solar regulator so you add a jump pack to trick the system
