  • Beyond money and education, dignity is the intangible key to living a better, happier life. It’s an invaluable component for those trying to escape poverty, but it isn’t just something that some people need; it’s something we all need, and that we can all share.
    Ajit George is the Director of Operations for the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project, a board member of the Indian Institute of Journalism, a frequent consultant for emerging non-profits, an energetic advocate for diversity in the game industry, a professional speaker, and the co-author of a forthcoming non-fiction work highlighting the role of dignity in personal and communal wellbeing. George and his team, through the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project, work to alleviate severe poverty among members of the Untouchable caste in India by giving children an intensive, long-term education over the course of 17 years, from the age of 4 until they graduate from college. Shanti Bhavan students have gone from homes with no running water and electricity to post-college careers at companies such as Goldman Sachs, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Mercedes Benz, making Shanti Bhavan’s success unprecedented in the non-profit world. Shanti Bhavan is the focus of an upcoming major multi-part television docu

    I have volunteered in Shanti Bhavan for couple of months and l can say that both Ajit and his father were there constantly, doing everything, from important meetings to individual talks with students and staff to playing basketball with them. They work from the moment they open their eyes till the night, constantly to reassure the school runs as best as it could. No wonder many volunteers keep coming back.

    Ajit' thank God your father had you he knew he could trust and depend on you. So sad his friend did that, he will reap what he did not only to your father, but to the children your father was trying to help. Your father I believe is being directed by God in helping people who can not help themselves, what a blessing to be a part of this wonderful endeavor. Sometimes people think the only way they can do God's work is to be a Priest or Pastor, anything we do in this life to help someone or in this case families come out of a dark hole , that you can help them see a light at the end of the tunnel, is God's work. Thank you Jesus for Dr George. Just remember George family you have a family in Nebraska who is praying for you and Shanti Bhavan.

    Thought provoking and heart warming. Simply remarkable. I will certainly pause and think about dignity when I feel frustrated or not respected. Thank you Ajit for your well delivered talk and I hope to get to meet you one day and help out the SB project with my time and energy.

    Your work is an inspiration. Recognizing that dignity is a human need is something that all countries should learn and use as a catalyst to create social programs (based in dedicated education and social empathy).

    I loved every bit of this presentation Ajit. Great examples and great takeaways. I watched Daughters of Destiny on Netflix last year and was so moved and impressed with the work being done that I started the process to become a volunteer soon. I pray there are more people like you, your father, and the Shanti Bhavan volunteers to empower women and children around the world.

    The intentions are good but the idea is inherently flawed, giving one child in a family admission and paying for everything from childhood to end of school does not end poverty. It places too much pressure on the one child and often tears the family apart. Poverty is multidimensional and often outside the scope of the school. Read about Victorian Britain or early 20th century USA and how immigrant children were working on the docks, selling newspapers, shoe shinning, engaged in domestic service and working in shops, remember these Indian families are as poor in real terms if not more. Social and economic mobility came about as general per capita incomes rose through growth, taxation and redistribution not to mention universal suffrage.

      @paulelliott1186 Před 3 lety +3

      It's easy to criticise. Poverty is certainly a horrible problem, and debts are generational in nature there, but I don't see where YOU are doing anything to address this societal problem or have a better idea to spread the education around as equally as possible on a limited budget.

    • @jyotivig5692
      @jyotivig5692 Před 3 lety

      @@paulelliott1186 Mr. Elliot you're criticism is again flawed, this is about the idea not my individual contribution. I would like greater accountability with respect to state actors as Education in India is a state subject. Private actors are welcome to contribute but have no impact on overall official state policy.

    • @jyotivig5692
      @jyotivig5692 Před 3 lety +1

      I think the state government should actively seek Mr. George's advice on how to create effective institutions for this specific demographic of kids cause we all know the dropout rate is very high in schools that do not offer free boarding and lodging. The Pell grant system for families or direct transfers to families that keep kids in school in another way. These families cannot support kids through the 20 odd years of formal education, they don't have the means, state schools don't have the deep pockets to provide support but they can incentivize staying in formal education by giving family support.

    • @jyotivig5692
      @jyotivig5692 Před 3 lety +2

      We don't want a system that depends on charity or philanthropy where the poor have to be grateful for someone generosity and in the long run there is no accountability for either side.

    • @springf85
      @springf85 Před 2 lety +1

      @@jyotivig5692 Wow, I wonder what good have you actually done? If someone can do something to alleviate poverty, then why criticize them for doing it? Like you said, poverty is multidimensional, and creating a solution for at least one dimension of it is better than nothing. If you’re not doing anything to help anyone, then you’re not in the position to say that the idea behind Shanti Bhavan is flawed.
