  • "Take 2" Literally. Seems a bit wasteful, but it's probably easier this way!

This was a fun video to watch. Great pace and narration.
Ingenious use of the brake lathe. Those are becoming very easy to come by these days.
    tHanks for the video

It is also possible to use a brake lathe to lighten flywheels too. Some came with an optional 90* tool holder for refacing however, I use the standard disc refacer tool holder since you are only taking material off the outer edge anyway..

Brake lathe cutters have a positive rake. This is done because regular brake rotors are cast iron and their brittleness leads to fine grains of metal being shaved off rather than stringy chips. For machining steel, negative rake cutters are used to peel the metal off in ling strings. Use a neg cutter on cast iron and the bit will dig in, use a pos cutter on steel and the tool will chatter because the bit can't bite into the metal. In other words, cast iron is more or less rubbed off and steel is like a roll of tape that needs unrolled.

Use the 15x3’s as a hose reel for your garden hoses.

Cool! I've spent many hours hand cutting the centers out of steelies to "re-hoop" 7" steelies into 8" in my home garage. Wish I had a brake lathe to make the work a bit more easy and precise.

Yes, the worst part for sure. I'm not consistent enough to not have to put a lot of metal back after doing that. I thought "there has to be a better way."

I always learn something from your videos. A lot of times it’s “dang, I need one of those!”

Years ago ~ 50 -;) Local shop.. Greens' made widened wheels. (His Son currently runs a V well respected Wheel restoration business.. redid my Maserati rims)
Got a set for my Mini S... They were great/poor boy Mag substitutes. Looked great.
Reality was they were Sum Bitch to balance. Hardly surprising given the welding in of a steel hoop between the wheel rims
Blackie built them true....he had skills.. but balancing them well proved another story entirely

Greens Wheel Repair in Richmond? These wheels all took 1.25oz per side except one that took 2oz. Very little run out. My banded wheels balanced about the same - one took around 2oz. Banded wheels are certainly harder to get right.

There is a possible market for the 15x3’s. Have you heard of cycle carts? It’s a whole new project series for you. You’re welcome!

I _have_ heard of cycle karts, but always thought wires, not steelies. Hmm.... What about '40's style cycle karts? We might be on to something!

I like it. A new direction for the concept. It does kinda leave the cycle part out of the cycle cart formula. But from my inextensive research. It seems like it’s a pretty informal set of rules.

You need to build a drag race car for the 3” wheels.😊

Difficult in getting the centers out.
When centers are placed into wheels at the factory, the barrel is heated and the center drops in so there is some interference fit when it cools. There is a vid from ( I think ) Aero Race Wheels that shows the process.

I wouldn't worry about cutting up 8 wheels to make 4. There's literally tons of these types of steelies in junkyards. Mountains of 'em.
I say the more custom-widened ones out there makin' cars look cool (even if they're Accents😆), the better!

The smaller wheels would be handy to use for hanging air hoses or extension cords over. I saw the first video and these look more solid to me but I am quite a distance away. You have one weld in the middle as opposed to 2 on the first set. If they hold air and balance up pretty decent then you should be golden. I don't know why that mod would be illegal. The factory wheels are welded. Maybe the thought is that a robot is better than a human at welding!

Interesting, it _is_ legal to repair aluminum wheels by welding, which sketches me out a WHOLE lot more than welding steel.

I don't think I would want to use an aluminum wheel that I welded!@@GregWellwood

I was wondering about half way through the video what you were going to do with the "other halves" (well, really thirds or less), Thank you for showing us😁
Suggestion, Do you have any kids making billy karts in your area?
I'm also wondering if you can actually buy tyres to fit 15 x 3(motor bike tyres?), but if you fit standard tyres, you'll never get gutter rash on the rims...

    • @GregWellwood
      @GregWellwood  Před 6 měsíci

I'm not actually convinced I could even mount a tire of any kind on a rim that small.
