I apologize if I offended anyone here by mistakenly appropriating your culture. It was not my intention. I love sharing things that inspire me. I will be more careful next time
:) Peace + Love ∞
letsbelol deleting my comment shows that you're still ignorant towards this issue. Thanks Michelle.
letsbelol Your comment was not deleted. It might have been spammed or flagged :/ Lots of love your way tho :)
Michelle Phan ilu girl amazing videos as always
Michelle Phan sorry my mistake my phone was playing up! The comments are still there. But as I said before thanks for the apology but that's not enough, taking down the video or providing a further explanation on why its wrong to your viewers will help discourage the oppression you just unintentionally encouraged through this vid, much love x
Michelle Phan Lol. I see what you did there.
Christen's forehead gem was not a bindi. It represented the adornment of the third eye (hence why I'm also wearing third eye sunglasses) If I were recreating an Indian bridal look, I would totally use a bindi and talk about the history behind it. I've done this with the Dia de los Muertos look and many others. Culture is meant be shared and inspire. Calling this cultural appropriation means you are labeling our form of self expression. If this video offended you, I apologize, however just know that none of us had the intention to offend. We only to inspire all of you to express yourself by unleashing your creativity. Love + Peace to all of you.
Michelle Phan culture is not meant to be shared. that was never the purpose. it's about tradition and family. not sharing, that's ridiculous. and if you were recreating a indian bridal look and used a bindi, it would still be culture appropriation...you're not indian.
Julia b If that were true, then I believe this is why we still have discrimination. The more we share our history and culture, the more we will connect. If we keep these walls up, we will always be divided. We all once came from Africa. We all once shared one culture. Why should culture only be for certain people when it is meant to bring us all together :) This is my belief though. I hope you can understand from my point of view.
***** So how can people learn about another culture if you cannot share it? We are living in the 21st century where people are becoming more exposed to new cultures and ideas. Why are these walls still up? Can we stop with labels and walls and live in a world where people can freely express who they are without any judgement? I know the only way we can get there is to start connecting with new cultures and ideas :)
Michelle Phan love you !!!
To be honest , things like this just show the flaws in western culture. As you know for someone who takes delight in exploring different cultures, you would know that the Bindi is something sacred, and despite the gem not being intended to represent the Bindi the placement of it and all does. It's wrong to do that especially when it's something that people hold so dear to their hearts as it is there culture. In my opinion I think that appreciation is good when you truly embrace, explore and learn about these cultures and truly understand the significance and symbolism behind them. But to be honest most of the time western cultures appropriate and take things that are sacred and just treat them as "just a trend" but I guess since western culture is founded on taking things that don't belong to them (mostly through colonisation) it is expected which is quite sad.
I just realized that Aquarius, the water bearer, is an air sign...
IKR
Yeah
The "water bearer" part means that the Aquarius is bringing the knowledge and wisdom, and air signs are known to be intelligent and communicative so that's how that makes sense.
I know that. I was just pointing out how ironic the wording was
+breezy fuller true dat
Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world. ( had too!)😂
YES
meeeee😂😂😂
U brought my childhood back 😂😂
thank you for making my day
hahahahahahaahahahah OMG made my day
Lmao are ppl really getting offended by the bindi? Hahahah I bet not one of them is Indian. As an Indian, I can tell you that a bindi can be worn by ANYBODY on anything ethnic. Wear it on western attire... Nobody cares. Though u might get glances in India of u wore them with western wear.... Not cuz it's culturally inappropriate, but cuz it'll seem a bit bizarre. It is most definitely NOT just worn by married women. I wear them too when I'm all dressed up in sari, salwar kameez, Anarkali suit etc. Get a grip ppl! Don't propagate bs when u yourself don't know jack shit abt it. Loved the video, Michelle and the others :)
Karishma Singh We only want to share beautiful things that inspires us ❤
Karishma Singh the bindi with the stones/and painted dots above the forehead is a hindu bridal look, which is what people are referring to when they're saying it's a look for women getting married. you're right about the bindi being used as an accessory in contemporary India, BUT context also matters. source: i'm indian + hindu. please educate yourself on the matter by reading these articles that explain the issue nicely. if you still don't get why so many desis are getting upset, we can have a discussion and hopefully we can all learn something from this experience. thank you. @2013 zinelibrary.info/files/culturalappropriationread.pdf
Swetha Anne ***** LOL pls! indians just need an excuse to get offended. it is hilarious how despite being urban, educated Indians, u guys are uttering so much nonsense. so many unmarried ppl wear wear painted dots to weddings. even if they dont, why do YOU have to get OFFENDED? how has it hurt your sentiments? find somthing more important to complain abt. there's plenty of shit happening in this country that needs attention
Debasree Banerjee
Ok so you obviously haven't read the articles I posted bc that would have answered all your questions. "Indians just need an excuse to get offended" wow way to hate on ur own people. You're ignorant and have no idea what you're talking about. If you're not willing to actually try to understand why this is offensive, then stop commenting. You're not adding anything to this discussion by calling ppl names
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs, but please refrain from attacking others. I want this channel to be a safe place where we can all discuss (even debate) without having to resort to name calling and bullying. Love + Peace to all of you :)
You're a beacon of positivity Michelle. Don't ever stop being you ❤️
Michelle Phan Thank you! I love your stuff. I don't think what you did was CA (as that is what is causing the "problems") but sadly the person in which I explained my thoughts deleted their comment and therefore mine. Just know I think this was great.
Michelle Phan loving those dreads on you though!
It's kind of hard to feel safe when it's parts of your culture being taken out of context and exoticized :\
It is totally true every personn have To respect others no matter his origins or his believes... Thanks for your videos Michelle
Mich, those cyclops sunglasses are the coolest thing I've seen yet in the shade world lol
Hope everyone is in peace. At the end, we must understand Michelle's intention. She is inspired by different cultures, not for fun really, but for the beauty..as she always does. Every culture has its own beauty and uniqueness but also influenced by others by history...I think we should feel opened a bit when our culture is admired for its beauty to make others follow, but interpreted differently by different individuals with different perception of life, fashion and culture. That's how life is beautiful with different colours. Also it is where creators and innovators are born, but still respect traditional culture of one identity. I always love to see Bindis as they are so beautiful and so admire them, such a beautiful tradition. I think people don't imitate a Bindi as it's fun but beautiful. Also I agree Michelle Phan saying about the third eye, it's not offensive. I know it's almost in every religion, describing a person is capable to sense/ see some thing ahead..
Any way, I'm here to hope everyone remember our true intention as well as Michelle Phan 's intention are to appreciate and learn the beauty of this life. We are all human-being- we have conflicts, but we get over it by understanding and empathy.
as a fan who actually cares, i'm not afraid to criticize the cultural appropriation in this video. the use of the "body jewelry" in that way uses south asian culture and minimizes it to some gems on a forehead to look ~spiritual~ and "trendy". all i can say is i'm disappointed mish :(
Brenda Vu I know, right? :(
i have a question, what happens if the "bindis" were under her eyes? would that still be considered offensive because of the bindis itself and the position, or it wouldn't be because of just its change in position? im just curious because some girls on instagram kinda do this to make it a hip look, but sometimes not with bindis.
woah calm the hell down Lucia Basterra didn't you just see some comments above you maybe you should read or think next time
today's fashion and trend is inspired by many different cultures, I dont find it offensive at all, I actually like it that people form a different culture try new things.
ITS A CULTURE NOT A COSTUME
Amusing how everyone is throwing around the word "racism" and using it completely out of context. "Racist" does not apply because you're upset she used body gems in the video. She's not hating on any cultures, get over yourself.
I know! Racism is hateful thoughts and actions BECAUSE of race. It really bothers me when people use the word racism wrongly.
cultural appropriation is apart of racism
***** great response!
+Lacie K
I wear a kimono for special traditions such as religious ones. it doesn't bother me if someone else wears it. I don't believe that anyone who wears a kimono is trying to be racist they might even in fact be trying to be more open minded towards other cultures. However the kimono is supposed to be used for special traditions and not just to be worn around for no reason, but I wonder how many people who wear a kimono who aren't Japanese and or don't know about their/the culture actually know this. Don't worry I'm not trying to fight I'm partially agreeing with you however the way you phrased it could be a bit harsh to some sensitive people.
Racism doesn't have to be overt to be racism. Also, there are _many_ forms of racism. Racially abusing somebody by calling them a racial slur is not the only form of racism. Get your head out of the sand.
So I guess I have two zodiac signs. A Sagittarius and Ophiuchus....kewl!
I love the kinds of stuff people wear and do to their hair and clothes in music festivals. It just looks so beautiful. Loved the hair and shoes.
There is nothing wrong with this video. She simply made it because she's obviously fascinated in this stuff. Everybody in this video did an amazing job. She didn't say anything bad about any culture, and couldn't possibly get anything wrong since this was simply a fashion video. If anybody is seriously offended by this, then they shouldn't of watched the video. They shouldn't even be on the Internet if something this small and unintentional bothers them.
DatGirlDoe ❤️
I completely agree with you. I saw the comments before I watched so I was actually looking for something to wrong, but there wasn't. Michelle was simply trying to share an interest of hers in a fun and creative way.
Oh my god shut up
+sweet0pie lmao wtf mate chill out and have a drink
Exactly it's the truth

Thanks so much :)
love your videos
I miss these so much, I love you Michelle and I'll always be here to support you and your decisions. 💗💗💗
YOU NEED MORE VIDEOS WITH THESE GIRLS! my favorites
There is an infinite amount of reasons why I love your videos, but two of them are 1. always different 2. editing is on point =)
I doubt she does the editing herself now, but it's still good
Sorry to tell you this but she hardly does any of the productive work anymore. She has her own crew now. :'(
Agreed
Those glasses though🙌 💕Loved the video and I had fun being apart of it thanks Mish Love ya!😘
***** I'm sure the video was already made before she posted something to instagram. I highly doubt she read what some people have noticed. But either way, I don't think she was trying to be disrespectful. Maybe you're right, maybe she did misunderstand.
WHERE DID SHE GET THOSE GLASSES
***** Well yes i agree that if you are not Hindu you shouldn't wear it. At the same time, its nice to see cultures blending into one. But i'm sure she has a busy life. Which is what i am getting at. Why would she ignore people?
Sid :* If she misunderstood, then it is her responsibility to listen up to people telling her what she did is wrong and then to fix it. Which I hope she does *hint hint*
Marilyn Castaneda I agree with some things you mentioned. I just showed this to my friend who is Hindu. He didn't think it was racist at all. He said he loved that other cultures find theirs beautiful and are praising it.
Your editing is always flawless!
I absolutely love these videos (also your cosmic candy one!) you should make more! Love you Michelle ❤️
Love those glasses! So much fun filming this :))
💓💓💓💓
What is ur nail color? ?? Im so in love!
***** We're gonna do another one soon :D
I need to know what your nail color was in this video!! the perfect baby blue
IKR
Do people not realize that bindis are now a trend for music festivals? I bet so many of you commenting "cultural appropriation" don't even know the significance of a bindi yourself. There are so many South Asians who wear bindis for weddings and parties and a lot of them don't even know what it actually represents. Tbh a lot of us just wear it since it looks good with our outfit. So if she's not mocking it, who the hell cares? These girls look beautiful wearing them so get over it.
You're right! And what's the problem of experiencing new cultures?
word. people need to calm down lol.
Mateja Pusic people pick and choose what they think is cool, without taking into consideration of the significance or historical influences those cultural aspects have on certain groups of people.
People with respect for their culture and traditions care. The voice of one person does not represent the voice of the entire culture. Just because there are some people who are fine letting others use their culture as a trend does not mean every member of that culture is okay with it.
Should we say the same thing about feather headdresses at music festivals too? Should we tell Native Americans to "get over it", "deal with it" and just accept the fact that their headdresses are now "a trend for music festivals", so they shouldn't voice their displeasure at the cultural appropriation in their situation?
If no, then why can't concerned South Asians voice their concerns? Or will it actually, physically cause you bodily harm to not wear a bindi? Wait. Don't tell me you don't know what's wrong with wearing a headdress for lolsies...
This was seriously a high quality video. I appreciate the effort and dedication Michelle. And the eyeliner magic though!! 😍😍
Michelleee your editing always on point and your videos so creative and amazing 😍💕🙈
The amount of cultural appropriation in this kills me
Serina G Not everyone knows what a Bindi is. I'm sure she didn't mean to offend anyone
True :(
Sid :* Yes, but that's the point. They don't know what a bindi is but still use it!! Maybe she did know what it was, but now people that don't know and are going off by her explanation of it being 'body gems' that just happens to be in the centre of her forehead, and going along her eyebrows more and more people will want to do this, which further increases the ignorance and ultimately results in culture appropriation. THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
Maynee87 still, we don't know whether or not if she knew. If this "cultural appropriation" is such a problem, then we shouldn't be able do, say or wear a lot of things. We are a melting pot. People are going to start wearing, eating, listening to, etc things from others cultures, if not already. Its a beautiful thing. I would rather have cultures getting inspiration from others, people learning about each culture and adoring each culture instead of hating or discriminating.
Sid :* that would be great in an ideal world. but truth is, no one cares to learn. i would love for non-indians to understand our culture, experience it and appreciate it but that's not gunna happen. and my point is proven with this video. no one cared to learn about where the bindi comes from they just decided to plop it on their forehead and go to a freaking music concert. probably because it looks 'cool'. why do people get to pick and choose what they want to take from other people's cultures, and bash the other aspects. culture appropriation is a problem, and yes, there are a ton of things we wear that is taken from other cultures, so we should take the time to learn and understand where it all comes from.
I instantly thought of Avatar: the last airbender when you mentioned the elements
YES 👏😂😂😂
SAME!
Same! XD And I didn't know that the zodiac signs represented a different element •o• I thought that was really cool!
JustSteph13633 LOL ME TOOOOOOO I thought i was the only one
Lol I started thinking of Toph 😂😂 cuz she's the baest of the best Òwó
I love these looks so much!
Eeeeeee! I love this format! It's like, the beauty avengers!
CULTURAL. APPROPRIATION.
THANK YOU I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THINKING THIS
Bindis are symbolic and spiritual. They carry meaning rather than culture, it's only that some cultures are more well-known for wearing them
Serena Bradley thank you
She isn't even white so I was super surprised she would do something like this
Serena Bradley ACTUALLY bindis are a part of only South Asian culture. Not all face adornments are called bindis.
Wearing a bindi is not fashion. It is not cute. You are appropriating a cultural symbol to look "cute" and "freespirited" without knowing and respecting the true meaning behind it. It is a culture, not a costume.
Emily Langley THANKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUU. SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME. No one understands Cultural Appropriation!!!!
***** Yeah. in India. Do you see any indian girls in this video? No. therefore, Cultural appropriation.
Its so refreshing to see people actually taking cultural appropriation seriously :)
Cultural symbols, such as bindis, native american head dresses, henna and other things are always used by hipster indie white kids to look cool and go to festivals. Its not fashion, its a culture.
And before anyone says "oh thats racist to white people to generalise" im white. Its just mainly white people who use these symbols as fashion.
Emily Langley YESSS. OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT. YOU ARE MY HERO. YOU ARE GREAT.
:)
Lets see if Michelle replies to this saying something like
"Oh we respect the beauty of the cultures thats why we were so inspired ~~~***"
Ugh.
Awesome michelle !! I love all the looks !
It was great to see all me favourite youtubers collaborate into one awesome video! xox
Omg I love astrology! Who else here is a Scorpio? 🙏♏️💕
meeeee!! scorpios represent 👊
oh hey dea
I am! I was born on 2nd and in my country it is the "All Souls' Day"!
Csaroline wait 2nd Nov? Omg mee took I finally found my bday twin! Day of the dead btw
ohheydea are you Indonesian?
Cultural appropriation much???
The bindi is NOT a fashion statement, it holds holy symbolism, why would you use it in a tacky beauty video??
I'm sure they only meant it to be an accent to their look nothing else :)
/Exactly/ what I was thinking as soon as I saw this video! Bindis aren't an accessory or fashion statement...
Mary Razalan that doesn't change the fact that it's wrong??
Mary Razalan I'm sure they did, but with constant evolving fashion why do they need to be picking out statements that holds great religious and cultural significance to many people in South Asia.
It's time the harms of culture appropriation are taught and understood. My culture isn't a fashion accessory!!
I love the style and vibe of your videos. Your voice is so relaxing. xxx
Love, love, love it! Great idea! I'll try that for a back to school look!
the amount of cultural appropriation that goes with music festivals is insane
Fairy Tail taught me Well. 13 key.
Me too!!! When she mentioned the 13th I was like fairy tail. Fairy tail taught me this already.
Yes a fellow Fairy Tail lover! I was hoping that I wasn't the only one thinking of a giant snake when she mentioned the 13th zodiac!
Abraham Perez LOL now that u mention it. Gotta thank them celestial mages.
I was thinking the same thing x)
Same ahahah
This is by far the most inspiring and tumblr video I have seen on CZcams. Awesome!
I loved this video!! I've just recently been getting into astrology and learning also about auras and chakras, crystal healing, essential oils, meditation, yoga, etc etc. It's so interesting to learn about. I love this side of you Michelle! It's so down to earth and wonderful. Especially in your new camping video. Great to see someone so successful stay so humble, and into nature. Xoxo
Woahhh those sunglasses tho 😍
ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED
The designers of those glasses are by Coco and Breezy Dotson
yes :-)
they're really cool but yea idk where I would wear that haha
Bit weird... I mean... We only have two eyes
a lot of yall are confused.. culture wasnt developed to be "shared by all". its purpose serves to unite a community or a group of people who share a common experience within a region or in identity. being in the "human race" isnt a good enough reason to be running around in kente cloth with bindis on your head calling it self expression when you have no idea what these things symbolize or if just for beauty who they are intended to adorn.
She wasn't wearing a bindi dumbass
Nice profile picture! XD
mango.html finally, someone with common sense
Definitely trying those boho sneakers! So unique & different than any sneakers that girls wear at my school. Thanks mish!💕
I love it when the five of you do all the beauty tutorials together. I really enjoy watching Cosmic Candy video aswell!
Woah, aquarius is has the symbol of air?! I thought it was water :( i've been wrong this whole time and I am and Aquarius.
Same!
same😂
Aquarius is the bearer of water. Its symbol is a human carrying water but not actually in the water :) Humans aren't water creatures unlike the water signs that all can live in the water.
Ikr lool
Same here! And it's strange cause Aquarius is the sing of water ;)
Here's the thing Michelle, you used the Bindi which we've used for thousands of years to mark our foreheads everyday and on the eyebrows on our special wedding day. Then you went and called them 'body gems'. I don't know what is more disrespectful. Using it in your video is not a bad thing at all, but atleast have the decency to acknowledge what is it and why it is special. You are using it to mark the third eye, which is what we use it for as well because we believe the center of the forehead is home to great energy. So essentially, you haven't created a concept of marking the 3rd eye. You've used a cultural symbol but refused to acknowledge it. I love all your videos and what you do, but that doesn't change the fact that this is cultural appropriation. You can fix it just by explaining what a Bindi is. That's it, no more noise after that.
Strike that :) I see Michelle apologized and said she will be more careful next time. And of course, Peace + Love!
Indygirl88 But it's a symmetrical thing. Gems on both sides of the brow then the middle looks empty so you put something different.
It is not a bindi. It was supposed to represent the 3rd eye.
I don't know what's more stupid, people like you or well..the people who agree.
oh my god she gave such an eloquent and respectful opinion and your retort is "because symmetry"
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISH! YOU'RE AMAZING, INSPIRING, UNIQUE, AND BEAUTIFUL!
Happy birthday michelle ! Love you, take care
I feel like I should point out that the idea of Ophiuchus as a 13th zodiac sign is a very recent idea, originating only in the 1970s, based on the IAU constellation boundaries of 1930. While the constellation of Ophiuchus was recognised by ancient people's as a constellation, the idea of it as a zodiac sign is extremely modern in comparison to the commonly accepted 12, which have their origins in early history, more specifically in Babylonian astronomy.
SeerWalker Ophiuchus was taken out of the zodiac signs because of the Gregorian Calendar. Before the Gregorian calendar, we were all following the Moon/Lunar calendar which is the more accurate than our modern day calendar.
Michelle Phan Really? I've never heard of that before. Insofar as I can tell, Ophiuchus as a zodiac sign has very little historic precedence and prominence, being a largely modern astrological idea. The idea of calendars themselves is interesting, and I won't argue that lunar, solar and lunisolar calendars have been in use for a very long time, and are still used by some cultures, despite the de facto use of the Gregorian calendar, and its predecessor, the Julian calendar, and are indeed, in some aspects, more accurate then the above mentioned. But hey, mapping time and its passing is a human construct, everyone's opinions are valid, and I've gotten off topic now. Anyway, the video was great, hope you have great success in your endeavours and future, and that everyone has a nice day
Jamie Jodie no one likes you either, you are rude!
GO GEMINI!!!! We're the best!

Those sunglasses are pretty EPIC!
I love these collabs
Since you're on I'm re commenting this in hopes that you will read it - Just today I was told by someone that I look ugly when wearing a bindi :)))) but not just that, it HURTS. It hurts to see that things are only worthy when a white person approves of it. It hurts to see something so precious to us, lose its significance and get thrown around like a rock on the ground. It may seem like much to you, but trust me, when you've been taught to hate yourself, hate your skin, hate your family, hate your heritige, hate your culture, hate YOURSELF, it feels much, much worse than what I just described. We are told to assimilate into white culture, that we have no self worth or place in this world unless we leave our culture behind and dress like white people, eat the food they eat, listen to the music they listen to, force our parents to only speak English, ans despite doing all this, stil get laughed at, mocked at, for being brown. Participating in our culture proves our otherness, that we do not deserve to be in this country, that we have no self worth and deserve no respect. A non-South Asian person wears the bindi, it is generally seen as edgy and cute. They are praised for their bold “fashion” choices. But when someone like me or my mother wears the bindi out in public, we are either stared down with dirty looks, or are verbally or physically abused. You can roam around wearing the bindi while I am mocked and ridiculed for it. How is that fair? We are trying to protect ourselves, we are trying to protect this sacred thing in our lives from becoming an insignificant thing in western culture. We have gone through so much SHIT because of racial stereotypes that white people have associated with us. The point is, - you wearing the bindi is removing the cultural and religious significance of the bindi. I - along with millions of other south asians, are annoyed and offended that the bindi is only worthy when a non south asian wears it. That our culture is only worthy when a non south asian participates. You have double standards, and it hurts, its racist, and we are claiming what is rightfully ours. Please, PLEASE, respect the feelings of many south asians and do not participate in cultural appropriation. You may not mean it to be intentional, BUT IT STILL OFFENDS US. You need to respect that, you seriously do. You need to educate yourself on this issue and understand why we are so offended. Just because you didn't intentionally mean to offend us or just wanted to "express your spirituality" doesn't mean we didn't get offended, and you have to respect us who got offended and be respectful. Please Michelle, I am BEGGING you. Please do some research, I hate feeling like crap because I happen to be Indian, and I hate that one of my idols is participating in an act that will further ruin my self worth. Thank you x
Very well said. I hope Michelle Phan sees this.
BelleAmari Thank you! I hope Michelle Phan sees this too! Much love x
no mean to impose, but perhaps it has something to do with the context behind why you are wearing the item. You may wear it for religious or identity purposes, whereas others might wear it for fashion and this creates the distinction. Perhaps it's not about the superior race. If you chose to wear it as a means for fashion, do you think you'd still be ridiculed? Religion is very controversial, and because of differing beliefs anyone will always get ridiculed for showing a different religious belief. I mean...if I wore a cross necklace in a buddhist temple people would definitely not see me in the same light as a buddhist, and some would talk down on me. I'm sure Michelle did not mean to have any religious affiliation with the "bindi," and if she did, wouldn't it be a celebration of the bindi, like embracing it and appreciating a different culture? If I were accused and ridiculed for wearing a cross on my neck, I wouldn't really be offended if a popular artist (who isn't christian) wore it on their neck. To me it's just them showing appreciation and an open mind to different cultures and religions. How do you expect people to treat other religions and cultures with kindness, if we can't ever talk about it or represent it to others?
👏👏👏 finally someone who understands. Not just that but the indian bridal makeup has been ruined for me. I always wanted to have all the bindis above my eyebrows on my wedding because thats what i saw my cousins have when they got married. But with this ridiculous festival/hipster shit its now been ruined for every south asian women. Since this stupid trend of wearing bindis started i havent seen any brides wear this look.
letsbelol I'm sorry to hear that, but most white people have nothing to do with that, and in fact look down on such behavior.
Water elements - first step is dry shampoo
Josie Hjermstad Oh the irony ;)
My favorite video the! 😍😍😍😍 I love how the zodiac signs and how they can describe a person. Thank you Michelle! I love this with a burning passion! 😍😍😍😍
Michelle this video is freaking awesome and I loved everything in it! And I loved your hair! Omg how'd you do your hair with all the waves and the pretty ties and such?? It's all boho and awesome! Love you
Cultural appropriation is widely criticized concept anyway. I, personally, see nothing wrong if it was done out of pure admiration (in this case the aesthetics of it) with no malicious intent towards the culture being imitated.
Nonetheless I love these collab-y videos with the awesome editing :D
***** Thank you :)
***** thats so funny. are you south asian? since you clearly are not; *how dare you speak from over us south asians with your racist opinion.*
Thank you! It wasn't supposed to be about Indian Culture, as she said in her comments. Whenever Michelle has made a video inspired by a specific culture she explains it in full.
You can admire a culture without appropriating it. You can't just take the "pretty" parts of a culture and completely ignore every other part of it and not even bother to learn the significance of the part of the culture you are stealing.
Ariem Mon This is my personal opinion on the concept in general, so how is it racist? But if you were offended then my apologies.
To all the white people telling what's wrong with this video, let me tell you something, please don't bother talking about a subject that you are not aware of.You don't have a culture,so you don't know how it feels. You don't have the rights to ridicule someone for their culture & their customs, nor do you have the rights to adopt some of the 'cool' parts from that same culture whenever you feel it's 'trendy'.
& to you Michelle Phan ,I am astonished by your audacity of justifying yourself. You are telling that the third eye also belongs to some other cultures, here's a information for you,it also belongs to the Gods & Goddesses of one of the oldest civilization of the world,India.
& you are not an expert on Desi adornments,so keep your opinion to yourself.
I understand that you are passionate about your culture, however Labeling people "White" causes more harm than good. Labeling will only put more walls up, thus disconnecting people.
I do not base my facts on any institutionalized religion. I base it on historical evidence and science.
The Oldest culture in the world is not from India. It's comes from Africa. There are now scientific facts within our DNA that shows how we all originated from Africa. This is scientific fact. Our genes have been mapped out and our origins points to Africa.
The third eye belongs to no culture. It is a gland between our eyes. Just like how we have a heart and a brain, we are all born with the pineal gland (third eye). It goes as far back to Egyptians, symbolized as the Eye of Horus.
Calling me names does not reflect your peaceful culture. Next time please cross reference your evidence with science and history from around the world.
Peace.
Michelle Phan but placing a BINDI on the third eye IS indian/hindu. you could have placed anything besides a BINDI on there and you wouldn't have offended a culture. We're not arguing about the third eye, we're arguing about you clearly using a BINDI, which is of significance to hindus, and trying to pass it off as a "body gem". That's stripping it of its meaning, which is what's offensive. looking forward to your video explaining this, thank you.
Holly Isabell "to all the white people..you dont have a culture" pls, you talking like that gives you no right to go all cray cray on that bindi thing. learn to respect others before you complain about someone 'disrespecting' you and your culture :)
Holly Isabell I am not only a makeup guru on CZcams. I am a human being who is curious about life. I am here to learn as much as I can from people, culture, stories, nature and myself. You can label me whatever you want, but I know what my true intentions are. I'm done here. Peace.
btw, guess who else uses OM to pray and meditate? Tibetan monks, who are buddhist :)
Michelle Phan the tibetian "Om/aum" has a different symbol than the Devanagari one you have on your profile. just a fyi since you like to learn. also, if you can engage in a cultural exchange via dialogue with the commentators, such as myself, who are being polite and only trying to educate you and others on why this is offensive, it would be a more effective than you just trying to get the last word in,
ahh these looks are amazingg!!
Why is michelle's voice so calming and magical. Love it
that water hairstyle is SO cute! what a fun idea for a video!
I a little shocked at the response to this video. I am Jamaican and my culture is often replicated by many people. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I receive it as a compliment. This is the best festival video I have ever seen and I plan on trying out a few looks!
Thank you Michelle I love you so much thanks for all of your videos teaching us how to be beautiful with and without makeup
These collabs are really cool. I would love to see more in the future. Lots of love ❤️🌙
What is this a dream ?? All my favorite CZcamsRS in ONE video ! Obsessed !!! More please
Meg Hall soon soon :)
"Peace + Love" wonderful, Michelle, instead of actually realizing that Western cultures can take whatever they want from my own culture and it's cute, but when I truly express something that has deep cultural and religious meaning, I'm laughed at, I'm shocked you're just choosing to take the white girl hippy method and pretend like you're spreading so much "peace and love."
Yeah that was infuriating to read in every one of her responses, so condescending
If you actually read comments, she actually did apologize. I think the whole situation on Michelle's part is wrongful but... she did apologize.
***** saying "sorry you're offended" isn't really an apology tho...
***** Not really. All she did was DENY that she did anything wrong.
What "wrong" dis she do?
Omg I love all these ladies !! And they're all in one video 👌
her videos are something else...outta this world
These collabs with these ladies are my absolute FAVORITE! Please do more!
***** We will!
Michelle, your video ideas are always so unique! I love it!
Callie Estelle Glad you liked it :)
Amazing video! I can tell a lot of effort was put into it :) You look gorgeous as usual, I just love this!
Have a wonderful spring 🌷
Btw your awesome :)
While I'm not South Asian or Hindu, I understand the argument. Growing up, I was teased and made fun of for being Japanese. People would make fun of the way I looked, what I ate, and my culture. Then I'd see people (who are not Japanese) superficially wear kimonos as a costume and it stung (especially the sexualized costumes ugh). Why when I, someone who is actually Japanese, embrace my culture I get made fun of, but other people can superficially butcher it and be seen as cute/unique.
I'm not really angry at Michelle, but rather at this movement where culture can be temporarily used in the name of fashion.
At my school we have houses, and I'm Ventus (= wind/air) And it makes me so satisfied that I'm libra- and as you said air is my element....
YAYYY ❤️
Hahah yes! :)
***** Thank you! :3
That's so cool, I had those when I was younger, named after famous water Springs in our town, still it would be cool to have in an older setting!
Adela That's so cool! My school has houses too. Nice to know we're not the only ones who do that haha
Adela cool! so am i. no wonder i'm so light on my feet hehe
This was a good video Mish! Editing on point. Dont care about the haters. Love you so much
Happy Birthday Mish! I love you sooo much!!! YOUR MY INSPIRATION !
This was an interesting tutorial. I love how you mentioned Ophiucus since not many people know of it! I like the sailormoon-like concept of having all the girls show different tutorials, but I'll be honest--I prefer videos where you're only in it best!! (Yet I love how you're branching out.)
This was a really beautiful video to watch. It was super aesthetically pleasing. Your editing/directing never fails to impress!
This is so cool Mish and these looks are amazing!! Keep doing videos like these I love them so much!! Ily
Woah I just learned that in fact I am not Sagittarius but I am Orphealius!! (Did I spell that right?) Thanks Mish!! I learned something new today :)
michelle you have really super cute designs ! !!!
Best video ever I love it all the looks were amazing! I loved the shoes\convers! I want to recreate everything! Your so amazing Michelle 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕🔯♊♋♎♍♒➿🔥💦💠⭐♥♥♥♥
Wow, I am so surprised by all of the hurtful comments on this video. I thought it was very cute for music festivals, and although the Bindi is a cultural thing, I was taught in my world cultures class that anyone can wear a bindi as it is supposed to bring good thoughts and ward off bad luck. I don't understand why it's so wrong to be considered a fashion trend, especially when it is supposed to bring good things. Are people angry that I wear a hamsa necklace even though I am not hindu or buddhist? I don't understand why everyone is saying they're disappointed in her, can't you see when someone has good intentions? She is a very spiritual person and I believe she really is inspired by the things in your cultures, it shouldn't be wrong to learn and explore. I loved this video. Keep doing you Mish. :*
Ashlee Carrozza Thank you ❤
fangirling that you replied, but omg you're welcome
If one believes in the spiritual and religious meanings of the bindi, and is interested and learning about the culture, I genuinely see no problem. One has the ability and change and explore religions and beliefs, and they don't "belong" to any specific region of the world. Yes, the majority of people who wear bindis are from South Asian culture, but anyone should have the right to explore and learn new things. No, everyone at music festivals isn't appreciating the meaning of a bindi, however it doesn't mean everyone who isn't hindu/buddhist/south asian or whatever, should not be allowed to wear one. In addition, Michelle even said how it was not supposed to represent the bindi, but in fact the third eye. I just cannot figure out why everyone is so angry, especially when even in indian culture bindis are being adorned as fashion statements sometimes that compliments their outfits. No need to flip out on Mish.
Ashlee Carrozza here, this person put it much better than me.
"Let me be clear: no one owns the right to put a bindi or any kind of jewelry on one's forehead, and to suggest that someone does, or that it should only be done in one specific intention, is as baseless a supposition as it is undemocratic and arbitrarily limiting of free expression. However, if you want to argue that, in the American context, Indians and other bindi practitioners are an oppressed minority, and that wearing the bindi serves to further alienate that minority, then you may have a case. A good example would be appropriating Native American culture. They are owed some reverence for having to endure hundreds of years of genocide, and as such, are still in need of a rebound to this very day. But this would not serve as a good global prescription: a religion that's nearly a billion strong has nothing to fear from the appropriation of its symbols; indeed, something so thick in rank should endure appropriation for the sake of free thought and open scrutiny, and to undermine fetishizing and the imposition thereof on others. Hinduism cannot ask non-Hindus to arbitrarily instill value in a piece of jewelry the way it does, that is oppressive in itself. This lecture on the bindi is much akin to the insistence by Muslims that Muhammad should never be depicted - we have no more reason to bow down to that notion than the notion that others cannot wear a bindi. It's also just silly to suggest "because our ancestors of thousands of years ago did it first, therefore no one else can ever do it for aesthetic reasons for the rest of time." Christians do not own the cross, Muslims do not own the Crescent Moon or minarets, and sure enough, Hindus do not own the bindi, and they shouldn't."

but...but did you read any of what I said
People can decorate their bodies however they want. Sorry not sorry.
Yeah they can but that doesn't mean its not racist
You need to learn what racism means.
Jillian Calilung its not racist -__-
Except if there culturally appropriating.
There was this youtuber who didn't know buddha but she had statues of Buddha every where in her room smh. That's disrespectful to the culture when it's treated like some fashion accessory.
Dae Suke... Stop being a troll
Her voice is so peaceful like omg
This was fun to watch Mish ^_^ and most important, i learned something new today :D!
The bindi represents the sixth chakra. It is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration. Wearing a jewel above the location of this chakra whether it is a bindi or simply decoration is positive for the wearer. Although it originated in South Asia, these jewels are seen in places thanks to countries sharing their cultures. It is beautiful to see shared culture.
Can ppl plz just stop yelling at the girl for using the gems on her forehead? Im pretty sure they didn't mean any offensive to anybody!
So plz just shut up and enjoy the video!
WinxMoshi0611 Thank you, seriously. This is just a CZcams video. If people are legitimately getting angry about this than they aren't paying close enough attention to their own lives.
Brenda Vu im open minded. Im not just gonna yell at someone for doing nothing wrong. Its just a video! Its not like she said anything bad about the ppl who wear it.
Sorceress797 It's not "just" a video. She is literally taking the bindi my mom is made fun of for wearing (because she is an actual Indian woman) and making it okay to parade it around at a music festival with no clue about how unfair it is for millions of Indian women. You clearly don't understand how heartbreaking it is to see something like this come from a CZcamsr you look up to :/
Sexydivaliciouz Thank you for compassionate heart towards minority cultures and the way we are treated.
Sabbie Narwal i personally don't judge people, no matter what they wear or what there religion is or anything. Its sad how people now a days just go around judging people because of there culture. I mean, people are only human.
But, in all honesty, I'm pretty sure the girl didn't mean any harm when they made this video.
this is soooooooooooo cool haven't seen this anywhere else
The shades were so cool
Btw...........
I love your videos ily ^w^
She'd take down the video if she really cared... but at the end of the day it's all about $
I've read her comments, if anything she made herself seem dumb to a a lot of us who do not wish to see our culture shit on. It's as simple as that and I don't see why we're being attacked for getting angry over this when we have the right to be angry? This is our culture not some stupid hippy fashion trend and you can use and then throw away when you get bored or some new trend comes along
So you're saying I should stay silent and let people trample my culture? There's so much wrong with your way of thinking. Enjoy your white privilege.
jasminkhg *hands you a smallpox-infested blanket*
Ignore it?!? I'm so done with how ignorant and idiotic you are.
Back off hater geez
I may not like Michelle, but she did not appropriate culture here. According to Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Government of India, the bindi is a decorative item and is not restricted in color or shape any longer. There are even self-adhesive bindis (like body stickers) available for simple decorative use. Bindis are worn throughout South Asia, specifically India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, by women, men, girls and boys and no longer signify age, marital status, religious background or ethnic affiliation.
I see your point. However, it's racist because desi girls and Hindus were dragged for wearing it but white people can wear it without any problem.
Frickfracklemore it is not racist , racism is discriminationis and she isnt discriminating anybody here ughh get over yourself -__-
Can you learn what the word "racist" means before you use it? That'd be great.
Frickfracklemore Can you give me some sources on where/when the Asian women were "dragged" for wearing it? I'm not sure I understand, because it was part of their culture until it became fashion.
ITS NOT A FASHION IDIOT ITS CULTURE STOP STEALING OUR CULTURE FILTHY WHITE PELPLE YALL DONT EVEN HAVE A CULTURE
Loved it! I've been completely in love with the Zodiac since a child, so I enjoyed this! Love you girl!
Oh my goodness! You guys are beautiful 😍 I'm an Aries and this has REALLY inspired me! Thank you!
it was great meeting you at youtubespace ny last week
I know a lot of you are into this because it's fun and trendy but you have to understand the cultural significance of the bindi, feathers, dream catchers, and dreadlocks. They all stretch from different continents and go back for centuries. Spirituality is not a disposable trend to get into during festival season. People dedicate their lives to these things and it is a part of their identity. Please be respectful and do not tell people that this isn't offensive, because it is. They get teased and mocked and even profiled for expressing themselves this way while you get to put it on and take it off at your leisure. Do not try to derail someones experience by bringing up "that one person said it was okay, so stop complaining." This a part of their culture, not yours.
Spoken like a true racist. If it is a part of their culture, they do have the right to say how something that they created for themselves can be worn and should be used. It's theirs. Racism comes from oppression. It is a system that erases identities, discriminates, and persecutes. Racism has built institutions to keep laws and social norms (that disenfranchise) in place. Racism comes with attitudes, like yours, that tell people they have the right to take what they want and wear it to a festival because wahhhh my rights my freedoms!!! Native Americans have the right to decide how war bonnets can be used, Indians and Desi people have the right to say how bindis can be used because they created it. They literally created these pieces for themselves and not for a bunch of idiots to use to go see bands in a desert. It does not belong to you but your privilege has allowed you to believe that you're entitled to whatever they have, so you get defensive. You're not oppressed, they're not trying to control you. Get over yourself.
BelleAmari and you say I have no respect and need to grow up. All I can do is laugh and shake my head. I will pray for you. Bless you
Because you don't. No one cares that you're laughing.
Sid :* You're repeating everything I've already said to you, this is absurd.
BelleAmari Sid is right. Whats absurd is the fact you are replying to rudely to anyone you don't agree with. YOU need to grow up. Stop trying so hard to put the blame on someone else when all the arguments you made really falls back on you. Very immature of you.
Mish , You are the best :)
I loved all the looks :) All of them are amazing and I wil surelly try them out :)
loved desi's hair!! and would've never thought to do that to my shoes, that's so awesome! thanks for sharing!
