The entire situation at Lux Aurea just felt so... manufactured. The group knows they need to leave before sundown or suffer known dire consequences. Amaya knows how bad this could get, she would do anything to protect Callum, and she has the capability to pick him up and drag him out if need be. Despite all of that, she allows the group to stay too late so that Callum could leaf through books to try to find info on how to save Rayla's parents, something that even Rayla admits is not time sensitive and could wait. Callum doesn't think to just grab a pile of potentially useful books to go, or promise to come back again when they can to find the info. Callum seems to forget how books work and never even considers that he could take one with him, the lemur has to rip the page out to get him to leave. Callum, a very bookish person, forgets that he can take a book from a LIBRARY. This whole scenario relies on every character in the group making absolutely nonsensical decisions. Callum has to hold the idiot ball, Amaya has to allow Callum's life to be endangered when it was fully within her power to force him to leave. If anyone in the group had been operating at their normal mental capacity the group would have never stayed past sundown.

Im so tired of these minion like animal characters being introduced and then accomplishing nothing. There are plenty of times where stella could have done something to help. Like why didnt stella teleport a key/ something to remove the restraints on the boat sooner? Why didnt bait attempt to blind the captain BEFORE he was put into the cage? If your gonna have animal minions make them interesting smh. Especially Stella because she has hands to properly grab sh*t

  • @SkywardShoe
    @SkywardShoe Před 8 měsíci +66

I actually really dislike how Callum handles Rayla stealing the key from him. I'm glad he didn't blow up on her, but I think he veered past maturely handling the situation and into "Rayla can do no wrong she must have a reason for whatever she did even if it looks bad to me" territory. Because actually, Rayla did do something stupid and needlessly deceptive and she and Callum need to actually talk about that and not just hand waive it. I feel like this unconditional forgiveness is just another side of the coin to how Callum ignored Rayla all last season: both routes mean he doesn't have to actually talk about it when Rayla does something that bothers him. This new strategy just allows them to get back together without having to talk about it rather than being isolated and miserable while not talking about it. Ugh, I don't really understand why this ship is still popular. I liked them in season 3, and I don't think the relationship is unsalvageable, but this is not a remotely healthy relationship right now and it feels like the show is trying to depict it as one. I'm never going to be comfortable with this relationship until these two actually talk about Rayla's two year ghosting of Callum and how much that clearly hurt him, and at this point I'm not convinced the show will ever do that. Seems like they just want to get them back together while burying the past.

These are some good points. I also had the same issues on how the situation was handled.

    • @TheStraightestWhitest
      @TheStraightestWhitest Před 8 měsíci +10

Call me crazy, but I think it was typical Netflix meddling. Their relationship was wholesome, based on trust and mutual respect (like Aang and Katara, it's a strong suit of Aaron and his wife's writing). But Netflix doesn't want wholesome. Netflix doesn't want trust and respect. Netflix wants drama, and for female characters to screw over male character in some messed up social political message for men to suck it up and accept it. Anything short of that is deemed ''insecure'' and creates a whole arc for that guy to figure out he was the problem. It isn't just Netflix doing it. Netflix did it with Castlevania (Trevor and Sypha), Amazon did it with The Boys (Hughie and Starlight) as well as with Invincible (Mark with Amber, Rex with every girl he's with), hell Insomniac did it with their Spider-Man 2 game (Peter with MJ). Basically you can see it in a ton of fictional products lately. And while Rayla and Callum definitely didn't start like that, they have devolved into it.
Like, right after they professed their love for each other, Rayla just ditches? And then Callum's just supposed to accept that? And then they make his entire S5 arc about just learning to accept literally anything she does? It makes no sense, and as you say; it really isn't healthy. Respect and trust is great, but it has to be earned. Callum trusting Rayla if they were in their S3 arc would be understandable, but him trusting her after the shit she pulled in S4 is the opposite of logical. They just turned him into a simp. I hate it. He used to have the right balance of respect for her, and respect for himself.

omg you are soo right! I call it tonal whiplash and it was awful all throughout S5. What is the point of having a more mature storyline with huge stakes and vengeful elves when every other scene is filled with cringeworthy, childish jokes? Personally, while I think the ocean elf, Finnegran was intriguing at first, I really hate that Ezran made it seem like he had a weapon of mass destruction only for it to be baby glow worms. I don't know if this was meant to be a joke, but it felt like an awful joke the way Ezran said something about him possessing something he shouldn't have.

I've found that it's a running trend in TDP in introduce things and then forget about them later. For example, in S1 it was EXTREMELY CONVENIENT that they had the Primal Stone of Wind to save the Prince from dying and letting him hatch. So why aren't there any other Primal Stones? Surely they weren't introduced so the group could have one that could solve a problem for them and then be forgotten right?

Avatar was one of the greatest shows of all time due to how the story was planned. Nothing is wasted. If something is shown, it's because it'll come up later, even as a small detail. Sometimes when I rewatch Avatar, I'll notice something in Book 1 that alludes to Book 3. The world is so nicely woven together that it feels authentic.
The Dragon Prince actually did this well in the first 3 books! It wasn't Avatar level writing, but who really expected that. It was still very good. I also really appreciated how Dragon Prince actually had stakes. In a lot of media aimed towards kids nowadays nothing matters. Dragon Prince actually had stakes. People died, or were seriously injured. Relationships were harmed by the actions of those in those relationships. It felt genuine.
When season 4 came out, they lost ALL these good features. It got too preachy and once I figured out nothing was at stake I got bored. I watched about 2 episodes of this season but when I realized the story wasn't fixed, I tuned out.
Season 4 threw the show off balance, but it was salvageable. But from the sounds of it, the show didn't recover. And it's a shame because it had GREAT potential.

    • @VogJam
      @VogJam  Před 10 měsíci +28

I've always had some complaints about The Dragon Prince, but not really any more than any other show. It took a few seasons to warm up to it but by the end of S3 I felt like the show had really arrived, like it had proved it could do a lot of what it promised (big, high stakes fantasy story with interesting characters and exciting action) and was ready to start delivering on its potential.
Season 4 somehow reversed all of that momentum. Action replaced by speeches, bad guys defanged, character relationships purposefully broken up.
Season 5 is definitely better, and I'd always encourage people to come to their own conclusions, but I'd be lying if I said I thought the show had fully recovered.

Either Terry is a useless part of the story, is the forced in key to her redemption arc or, in my theory, Terry is an Aaravos puppet that is manipulating Claudia in order to keep her from giving up and giving her the hope to keep going on. That's why he never really tries to stop her from going after her evil plans and keeps elements in play he can use later.

The ending shot of episode 8 made me irrationally mad. The Jailor placing Aarovos' prison in a place called "The Sea of the Outcast" is kindof on the nose already but why, oh why is there a GIANT CARVING OF AAROVOS AT ITS ENTRANCE!? Who put that there? I cant imagine the carving was already there before the prison was put there so was it carved there afterwards? why? and by who? The location of the prison was supposed to be of utmost secrecy, to the point of death if you knew, the only person who was supposed to know was The Jailor right? Did the Jailor make that carving? Why? Just couldn't help but leave a giant clue or something? It just takes it from being an innocuous location to being literally the first place you'd look. This wouldn't be so bad if it were somewhere so obscure that it didn't have a name, or no one knew where it was, or how to get there, but its named and on the maps, people go there, maybe not often but often enough to name and know how to get there.
Now I'm no mage or prison architect or anything but if I wanted to hide away histories greatest monster I would not want it anywhere near a mountain sized statue of them. I get that its a wonderful shot visually and artistically but narritivly it makes my brain hurt.

I've only just finished episode 2 but I must say the show really has a problem with having too many characters to focus on. It wouldn't be so bad if the scenes were longer and weren't split up so much, but as it is now Callum is making a dumb joke one moment and then viran (or however it's spelled) is having some dark nightmare the next. I'm getting a lot of tonal whiplash that could be solved by simply having an episode separated into segments per character group instead of jankily switching between them every 2 minutes.
Also, is it just me or is the character animation more lifeless this season? I feel like in the past the shows choppy animation style could work in it's favor, but now it feels like it's trying to cut corners. It might be just me, but the characters seem a lot more stiff nowadays

TDP's has been suffering from having a bloated cast for a long time now, which is why I don't get why they're still bothering with characters like Karim.
There's only 9 episodes per season, that time could be better spent on Viren/Claudia so that they didn't spend 2 seasons lost in the forest and having nightmares as a substitute for actual character development.

Man, I don't even know what they're thinking with the mascot animals... Sure, he's there, he's in scenes, but nobody ever acknowledges him. And then Stellar's in the same boat after only 2 seasons, just basically a background prop.
You're right about the show feeling like disjointed events, that's seriously such a great way of putting it. Ugh, sorry for the repeated comments, but this show has just gone in such a wild direction and I am baffled by so many of its writing decisions. It's been such a strange turn. Other thoughts: Why does the dragon tailing Claudia not report back to Zubeia/the other dragons at any point, either as soon as they spot the group or after losing the fight? Is one of those giant statues at the secret location of Aaravos's prison Aaravos? Because if it is... that really does not seem like a great way to keep a secret. We still don't fully understand why Dark Magic is even evil. Why is Callum using a calamari popper to turn some chains into snakes such an evil act, especially when it hurt no one and allowed him to save other people. It's not like people in the world don't kill and eat animals for food, so why is it different using a piece of one for a spell? We need an actual explanation for why dark magic is bad, and at this point it feels like we'll never get one. If Claudia and Co. had no idea what Aaravos's prison was, literally the only way she could have found it was Callum and Co. having traveled there to stop her, meaning that they endangered it more by looking for it than if they had just focused on tracking down Claudia via dragon sweeps over the continent.
Finally, I'm tired of hearing about how "it's better than season 4" and "it's setup." Season 4 was terrible, and season 5 being better than terrible but still not good is not a complement. And if season 5 of this show is STILL setup then I don't think we're ever going to see what payoff looks like.

I expected Claudia to lose her dad and go full blown evil and win in the end making the stakes extremely high because now we have aaravos and Claudia lose on the world. But know everything is perfectly fine and nothing was done this season. My opinion is the story is there but is filled with dumb side quests and dumb characters to fill time.
We needed Arravos to have at least 2-3 seasons of horrible acts before he is defeated, not till the last season to be released and then defeated. So frustrating

@@LordFlames As a fellow writer, I so agree with this. I think S5 should've ended with Aaravos being set free. Not only would that have been great setup for S6 which was missing from this finale, but it would've also actually given him time to show us why everything banked on his imprisonment. If he is only unleashed by S7, AKA the finale, he will not get enough time to shine, especially among such a bloated cast. This guy is their Thanos. He's been teased from the beginning. His influence is everywhere. They can't release him and then defeat him in the same season. That'd be like Thanos only showing up at the back end of Age of Ultron instead of having two films dedicated to him, and literally going down within the first 20 minutes of his appearance. It will be seven years of setup with literally zero payoff. A total flop.
Payoffs where there were no prior setups are frustrating, but nowhere near as frustrating as lacklustre payoffs to endless satisfactory setup. A bad payoff can literally break a product. The finale to Game of Thrones showcases this better than anything. It made the at the time highest rated and most watched TV series of all time be considered not even worthy of a rewatch by 92% of over 2M voters when asked. Now that's bad. It wasn't even imagined to be possible considering how lauded the first four seasons were. And yet it happened, and I got the sneaky feeling TDP is heading the same direction. S4 already destroyed much of what made S1-S3 enjoyable.

I'm kinda heartbroken. Not like sh*tting and crying, but I got SO invested in this show during season 1-3. Like man, I'm a BIG shipper once a pair hooks me and Rayllum had me squealing in my seat.. now they don't. Season 4 ruined them for me completely. And all the characters are just off idk, maybe cause the animation is making them way less expressive than they used to be. And I pretty much agree with all your points. Just makes me so sad cause I loved this show and I don't believe it can pick itself back up after these disasters of seasons. It's rare that I get hooked on a show, even popular ones. :/ Feels like losing a sentimental item.

  • @MahsaKaerra
    @MahsaKaerra Před 9 měsíci +10

The Lux Aurea plotline, I think, could be more compelling as a main plotline because it feels more natural as a sequel to the first three seasons. You have the elves who were forced to flee their homes and have to recover from that while at the same time living alongside what are essentially human colonists. Neither side really trusts or understands the other... But I guess that has to be relegated to the c-tier plot, lest it feel too reminiscent of real life stuff. 100% a story that can be told but it needs the right person to tell it.
That aside. I think the storyline following Zubeia carries more emotional weight, especially after her hallucination scene where she says she wants to give up on life to be with Avizandum again. It gave me real feels and I would like to see that explored more in seasons 6 and 7, whether it would be better for her to free herself of grief and join her husband or if it would be better for Zym's sake that she doesn't. Her interactions with Soren are bittersweet, too, because of how they are genuinely good with each other but the fact of who his father is would always be a reminder of what she has lost.

Man, I just don't care bout the Amaya subplot. It takes up so much time. The relationship is forced, it feels like it was meant to tick some representation boxes, and it skipped completely past the most interesting part: how Amaya and that elf queen got together. A relationship like that needs to be developed, especially because they were literally at war with each other a few seasons back. They needed to take a few steps back, have the forbidden romance subplot be the trigger for the political turmoil. Sets up some really interesting conflict.
The Rayla/Callum relationship, and Virren's family, really keep me invested in the show. If I were the show runners, I would've cut the Amaya arc to just an episode, used the extra time to cover events around Xadia, set up the players around the continent and give Aaravos some surface area to do his manipulations, and focused more on the political intrigues and divisions between the dragons. I would have given Rayla a more compelling reason to have left Callum.

I'm guessing the hook is meant to be
    - what's gonna happen to the dragon queen and the mushroom guy
    - a sun elf civil war.
    - Sol Reg will regain his eyes and challenge the queen.
Except all of these are side plots and they forgot to setup a main one

Personally, I liked season five. Though the beginning was clunky, I liked the Finnegran arc a lot. Finnegran is (in my opinion) the best villain the show has ever had, especially concerning how little time he did have. Seeing Callum actually get tortured by him was surprisingly dark and I like that it's finally getting that more intense tone the creators promised after season three. I also really liked the scene in which everyone refuses to give each other up, and then Finnegran just turns it around by pointing out how Callum could easily use dark magic to free them. It's good setup for Callum's moment of using it later, and I like how Finnegran is able to play against Callum's philosophy. And of course, the final panning away shot revealing that Callum did give in and use dark magic again felt really impactful and it gave the entire arc actual importance in the wider story.
I also liked the sun elf stuff this time around. Not the actual stuff happening, that was boring, but the introduction of the vampire elf was really cool. I thought she, along with Finnegran, was one of the best villains the show had to offer, and the scene of her attempting to steal the sun seed REALLY felt like they were leaning into the darkness, which I appreciate. Seeing her cut down soldiers mercilessly felt like payoff for the tone shift that was promised, and didn't really happen.

I felt like this season was way better than season 4, but it still was a little disappointing. I think the way they handled the Sunfire Elves plot was way better. But I wish Aaravos was in it for more than (literally) 1 scene. And that scene wasn't even that good in my opinion...
His scene in Season 4 where he takes control of Callum and then breaks the mirror was awesome. I loved it, and I feel it did a great job of adding to Aaravos's threat, but his (again, only) scene in Season 5 was just an info dump about how viren's gonna die unless he sacrifices the butterfly thing. And I also felt a little weird about the "OUR child" thing.
The Scumport part was really fun and I loved Finnegrin as a character, except for how Ezran puts everyone's life in danger for the show's newest cute animal mascots and nobody calls him out for it.
Overall, I'd probably give it a 6/10. Definitely better than Season 4, but Aaravos should've gotten more screentime.

I'm really hoping season 5 ties up a lot of loose ends and has more focus on the main plot. That way, by the end there is a set goal and only one or two ends that need tied up that can be resolved in depth in a big build up to the final fight in season 7. I also hope that the Rayllum plot makes a lot of progress, getting a significant part of an episode or maybe even an episode of its own towards the end of season 6 or beginning of season 7. Just something where they have a deep conversation where Rayla apologizes for walking out and they finally realize (again) how important they are to each other, making them both stronger for the final fight.

TDP has honestly been treading water since the very first season and with how slow the paper-thin plot has been moving across all 5 seasons, considering how much time they've wasted in 2 out of their 4 remaining seasons I don't know how they're gonna end this without it feeling incredibly rushed and unsatisfying.

    • @TheStraightestWhitest
      @TheStraightestWhitest Před 7 měsíci +4

This. There's only 2 seasons left, and there's three plotlines of drama unrelated to Aaravos that have yet to be resolved (Rayllum, Sun Elves and Humans beefing, and the Prince guy trying to claim his sister's throne using Sol Regem). That's enough content for literally a season or more, especially at the filler pace we're getting. S4 and S5 literally resolved less than a single plotline meanwhile.
That is extremely bad news for S6 and especially S7. It means every single one of those plotlines is going to have a trash and rushed conclusion. It's inevitable. Because they are forgetting that we still have AARAVOS, the big bad, while we only have two seasons left. You can't set him up for seven seasons but then have him get beat the same season he finally leaves his damn cage. He should have been out already by the finale of S4 or S5 at the latest. If he doesn't get out and already gets time to wreak havoc during early S6, this show is dead. It will have literally been all buildup without payoff.

I enjoyed this recap/review of S5. Congrats for getting through most of it without comparing it to AtLA. I genuinley thought after Terry had committed his first murder, he would grow a personality or something. I guess not. Your comment about "moth boy" being sired by two guys and what it does for LGBT representation kinda made me chuckle. I really wonder if they thought that through. I think I might be one of a few people who hates S5 more than S4. It's honestly just super frustrating for me, especially because of the tonal whiplash. So many dark, creepy things are happening and they're all joking about glow toads or something. The whole thing about Finnegran's island being filled with some of Xadia's most dangerous people was completely undercut by all the humour. There are defo some things I didn't notice when I watched it, like Terry dissappearing when Viren was talking to Aaravos, or Zubeia not helping General Amaya at the library. So, thanks for the insight. I'll probably keep watching because I'm already 5 seasons deep, what's another 2?

I had multiple elements annoy me this season.
First the passing in each episode, and then I mean mainly the jumping between the different storylines. Sometime you’d get 2 lines and they’d jump to the next story already? And worse when they would jump back and forth between two story lines, only showing 2 min or less at a time. I feel like they were trying to build tension but a lot of it is never picked up on again and it felt very weird and empty.
And secondly the weird disassociation between event. Like we just heard in the library what one scratch can do, then the mother dragon is clearly attacked, but nobody ever mentions the ramifications of it at all, only Sorren shortly shows concern but even then when she is supposed to pick them up at sunset and she doesn’t show up they don’t discuss it or even show concern that she never showed up
They just go on their merry way?
Also why did Ezra&co suddenly show up at the library? How did they know they were there at all? Why do they never go to Janai to tell her about their aunt?
It felt so empty of emotions, so empty of consequences. It was just super odd to me
And I completely agree about Claudia’s storyline, she doesn’t really do anything until the last episode nor does her character grow or develop
Virren’s dreams were alright but then him entering a second coma? When already nothing was happening in their group was so weird and unfulfilling
It feels like they have too many characters that don’t do anything
Zym doesn’t do anything, not even show any emotion for his mom. Sorren is just there most of the time. And now they added three small versions of Bait?
They already have too many characters that don’t do anything??
    Okay rant over sorry guys

But no everything is perfectly fine and nothing was done this season. And F TERRY HE IS THE MOST ANNOYING PERSON IN THIS WORLD he is only there for plot and unfunny humor.
We needed Arravos to have at least 2-3 seasons of horrible acts before he is defeated, not till the last season to be released and then defeated. I thought season 5 was loads better than season 4. Certain aspects of the storytelling really do still frustrate me though. I feel like the main events of season 4 and 5 could have happened over the course of one 13-episode season rather than two 9-episode ones. The creators clearly HAVE a direction, but they're spending too much time on side stuff that doesn't really matter rather than just... getting on with it. While it was entertaining, the group drawing the attention of Finnegrin by stealing his glow toads was completely contrived, and because Finnegrin is now presumably dead, it makes it seem like his existence was pretty much meaningless. They could have found another way to write Callum being forced to use dark magic so that it was actually relevant to the larger story.
To be fair, I think there were pacing issues in the first three seasons as well, but the character arcs were more effective. I'm worried though that like season 3, season 7 is going to be too jam-packed to explore all its ideas effectively because the preceding seasons meandered too much.

Credit where credit’s due, season 5 has its good points, the finagrin side quest was done prettywell (although being an additional subplot in a series with too many) with good character development, started off pretty well and fixed a few issues with season 4.
However, it also has so many points where it just doesn’t work.
My first major gripe is the library episode. The season went through so many episodes to set up this library and the necessity to find a way to kill a star touched elf. The episode does get us knowledge of this mcguffin sword, the thing that can return rayla’s parents and provide points of tension in zubeia getting corrupted and Amaya and Korvus getting trapped. There’s episode itself is fine but the most aggravating part is that nothing from this episode get used. The sword is brought up once and then forgotten, Zubeia gets magically healed at the very end and Amaya and Korvus return unharmed. The only inportant contribution to the plot this episode make is forcing the group to meet Finegrin and to maybe not have Amaya around when her fiance is captured. Hopefully the knowing of the sword is setup for a future season but i wouldn’t count on it seeing as the key to aaravos in season 1 still hasn't been brought up.
Some of the animation is a bit wierd as well like the static zubeia shadow that just enlarged and the screenshots in Viren’s first comma (these were mostly just funny)
The ending was very anticlimactic. The fight was anticlimactic and i felt like the way it tied everything up was not really effective.
I really hope season six is better but at this point i just hope it’s not worse.

Its always painful to lose your friend, but do you need to torture your own man? I feel like he has so much more dept. I also think season 5 is better than season 4 but still not as good as the previous ones. However, I look more positively at the next seasons than you. The creators came up with the stupid idea of going 2 years ahead without changing anything (because you had to wait 2 years for the 4th season, which is now some stupid norm with the creators that hiatus in real life must coincide with hiatus in the history of the story) and now everything what should happen in these 2 years is happening and now at once, that's why many characters are waiting in limbo until they are important. It's annoying but after this season I have a reasonable idea of where it's going and I like it enough to want to wait for it. Before Aravos is released, the dragon queen will die and the sun dragon will regain his sight and Xadia's civil war for the "dragon throne" will begin between him and Ozymandias, and Aravoss will prey on this and form a team of his mages consisting of, among others, the brother of the queen of sun elves, this pirate who was eaten by a sea creature (he definitely survived) and Nadia. Ideaw has more where this is going, but it's more fanfiction than guessing based on what happened in the series.

The first three seasons were quite good. Seasons 4 and 5 were rather middle class to bad.
In general, I don't like when conflicts only consist of characters being too stupid to use their powers or not being able to think logically.
For this series being called "The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos", we see very little of Dragon Prince or Aaravos. They introduce the new animal character Stella with her portal magic, but then Stella only uses her portal magic 3 times or so. Although, there would have been much more opportunity to use this ability. I would have rather seen Zym become a proper main character and part of the hero group. But the dragon prince is basically just a big blue dog with wings who can't even fly. That's what always bothers me about all dragon stories, that dragons are just reduced to exotic animals and not as main characters.
We also see very little of Aaravos in the two seasons. For being the big brilliant villain, he's achieved virtually nothing. I also didn't understand the whole Aaravos prison being divided between the archdragons. Basically, you only need one piece of this secret to find the prison. I also don't understand why the location of the prison is marked with two gigantic stone statues of star elves.

I watched the show, after falling in love with Avatar the last airbender at old age. Avatar was really a revelation, an delicate artpiece, and ok..but i really find the first three seasons of the Dragon Prince very interesting and engaging..it seemd to me an interesting show where there were not easy or clear divisions between "good" and "evil" in a complex way with a lot of potential...but than from season 4 that radically changed. The last two season were unwatchable, litteraly i felt quite sick..due to all the crazy cuts, and the digital graphic that ruined the growned up Cullum and Rayla facial expressions. It really made me angry how the show changed from season 4 and how got boring and in the end really bad, in my opinion... Characters who seemed deep and multifaced in the previous seasons somehow changed and are like charicatures without any personality, the main plot is not particularly interesting or could be but we still dind't reached any interesting turning point, the other storylines are unconclusive and boring, like the library thing, and there are a lot of incongruencies all the time...like... Why everyone is surprised that Zubeya gets zombiefied if they said all the time that one bite wound have cause it for sure? and at the end on the beach Viren was with Terry, so i expected that when Claudia got back after her defeat she would have found him and talk to him..why is he now alone in some kind of wood waiting his dead?...and i also find that Zym has a real dog voice very strange and ugly... not going to watch season 6. Thanks for the video

I've just finished episode 7 and yeah, I literally thought they just plowed through the wreckage and made it through just fine because plot armor.
The crab ship looks terrible. It's a cool concept but the execution looks like they didn't even render it.
So you know that overhead shot of the giant ship right after the legs come out and stuff? I noticed an editing mistake there. So there's this big spike and It's between the camera and one of the big poles on the mast that holds up the sails, so the pole is supposed to be behind the spike but we can still see it because they forgot to edit that part. The whole ship just looks so out of place in that shot, the disappointment is palpable.
The next episode after it was pretty cool though, and I liked the return of the blind pirate guy.

Terry is 100 % supportive of Claudia, no matter what she does. He seems like a genuinely good person, whereas she is obviously increasingly evil, and also sinking deeper into dark magic abuse, something he enables. He isn’t just absurdly over-the-top nice all of the time, he’s also hot and useful. (I get the impression they’re having good sex, off camera.) But what is she bringing to the table in their relationship? When has she done a single thing for him? Apart from ordering him around.
To me the only explanation that makes any kind of sense,is that she has used dark magic to make him love and obey her. She is a mindboinking SA perp and he is both a slave and a SA victim. But I don’t think this show, which is now super PG, can go into that level of adult fear and darkness. So I don’t understand why they are writing these implications into the story.
I guess they don’t adress this in season 5 either…

I think the main problem with s4 and s5 is that its villains are bad. Claudia could defeat a dragon in s2. I wasn't impressed that Claudia could defeat a dragon in S5. Even some birds in ep5 were more threatening than Claudia in the final fight. In season 4 she could put an arch dragon to sleep but in season 5.
Viren is neutered. In season 4 we got at least a semi interesting cliff hanger. If they let Viren die in s6, then I question the showrunners writing skills. We spend so much time with Virens redemption, then letting him die is stupid.
Terry could be Claudias fever dream and nothing changes.
Aaravos is a mystery box that waits to disappoint us. Remember Snoke from Star wars? I think the the story would be better if it didn't had Aaravos. The human elf conflict and dark magic can carry this show alone.
    My season 6 predictions
Callum will free Aaravos, because he is curious about the prison. Set up in s4 and so on.
Claudia will use her leg to help Viren. Now we have a disabled character and representation. Terry is a trans and that it. What is Claudias goal after s5? I don't know. Claudia and Terry could have had a conversation about their future. I mean they spend all this time on a boat.
The sunfire plotline still feels out of place. It feels like Netflix has demanded that there needs to be more black representation and black people need more screentime. Karim is a weak antagonist that has no business with callum or claudias group. The sunfire priest was bitten by Aaravoss bug and is the only thing that keeps the story somewhat relevant.
The story in s5 seems weak. Our heroes look activly for trouble. Callum has to stay too long in the bookery or Ezran needs steals some baitlings to prevent a dangerous pirate from going fishing. I feel lile none of these side story matter. Season 4 and 5 could be one season.

So then they can work on being the good parents, parents that are good and no longer the coin parents, parents in the coins.

I love the world, I love the hard issues the series tackles, but I feel like it lacks structure and has a lot of filler and doesn't know if it wants to be a kids show or a young adult show half of its runtime. I feel like it's lacked heart after the first seasons and the timeskip was absolutely useless. NEVER make your audience read a book to catch up on story on your TV SHOW or whatever graphic novel dunno. Also Rayla's VA really needs to DIAL IN, she lately has seemed like she's focusing more on keeping the accent than actually ACTING and EMOTING.

It begs the chicken or the egg question though: Did the show go obscenely woke because of creative bankruptcy? Or did its creativity get axed in favor of social political messages?
There's a documentary made about subliminal messages. It got banned from CZcams, pretty sure it's on Rumble and Odysee. But it basically exposes how much this happens. A show starts off normal, uninfluenced by politics. It just focuses purely on quality storytelling, world building, good action, and character arcs. But it does that specifically to get people hooked, because once hooked, people will generally keep watching and thus fall victim to subliminal messaging.
      It's sinister like nothing else.

I think season 5 absolutely ruined the show, it was worse than everything else combined.
This show had so much potential, and I hate to see it being torn apart and wasted like this. However, I can't drop it until it finishes, because as a professional writer I think it's important to consume other stories, the good and the bad.
The creators have screwed the writing up in ways I didn't even think were possible. It's like they're going out of their way to make it worse. Season 4 was never THIS bad.
I didn't think it was possible for this show to turn out this bad when it could've been so good.
A lot of the aspects of the first three seasons that were jarring and horribly written (such as everything about Ezran's inconsistent character and actions in season 3, how the final battle was handled, what happened with Pyrrah, etc, etc, etc) can be overlooked if you give it enough effort.
Even a lot of what made season 4 bad can be overlooked if you really try hard enough. It was a setup season, and a lot of stories are usually off to a rocky start. I know because the first book of my book series was not nearly at the same level as the others, but I was very proud of where my writing went afterward in the following books once the pace was picked up. I know from experience that starting a story is hard, and it's usually not as great in comparison with the rest of the story. For these reasons, I was willing to overlook a lot of the stuff about season 4, so long as the next seasons were better.
But season 5 wasn't better. It could have been so much better but it was 100 times worse. It just shoves the plot convenience, plot armor, plot devices, and atrocious writing in your face at 100 times a larger magnitude than the first four seasons.
I used to love this show so much, but season 5 was just blow, after blow, after blow, after blow, after blow. It also made me realize that the first three seasons weren't as great as I initially thought, and stopped me from continuing to overlook what happened in season 4. It made me go from loving the show to hating it as a whole.
There's no way it can redeem itself with only two seasons left. It's a lost cause, and it kind of already was, I just hadn't realized it yet.
