  • Having a German car shop in California for 20 years and a hoard of children I need a source of safe inexpensive cars, not only for the kids but for me too. Operating a body shop also influenced what I believed were the strongest safest cars. The VW Rabbit/Golf proved to be structurally safe and extremely reliable and inexpensive to operate. From the Diesel power cars that got incredible fuel milage, to the great performance and handling of the Scirocco and the GTI and the style of the Cabriolet and Jetta, the perfect sporty family car of the time. All of the first generation cars proved their worth in safety, longevity and in racing. I cannot remember when we did not have at least half dozen we owned. we still kept them around when we graduated the kids to Audis, Porsches and Mercedes. I even campaigned a Jetta in NASA racing, the ultimate rain car and I did extremely well with it in the 1/2 mile oval at Altamont. The durability of these cars is legendary, our 1978 Scirocco S was our first and we kept it until 1994 when sold it to one of my techs when it had 280,000 miles in 1997. when I last spoke to him in 2004 the car was at 480,000 miles. The 1.6 liter engine was still going strong..

    When I was stationed in Germany back in the 80's we used to call these cars "wingless airplanes". Someone did the math and concluded that by calculating the size and speed of this car, at full throttle, this car was so fast that if it had wings it would actually leave the ground

    My mother had a red '75. Awesome car!!! They were still made in Germany back then. Great gas milage, great handling, and acceleration. Fun car to drive. My '81 made in USA one was a crap car.

    Love your voice man! Great narrative. I've had many MK1 and 2 VWs. BTW next time just put your phone all the way to the glass. You'll see. Works like a charm.

    Has to have more done cosmetically to make it stand out,looks like any other mk1,especially here in southafrica they all look the same,same rims etc etc etc,be more radical like ratting it out

    theres a vw rabbit forsale the next town over from me and i like it but my parents think it wouldnt be a good car because its from 78 so i was wondering what are the pros and cons of a vw rabbit?

    • @justsumguy2u
      @justsumguy2u Před 8 lety

      +Benjamin Alt Pros; they handle great! And the fuel-injected models were fairly quick. They were also built very well, high quality. Cons; water tended to get in right above the fuse box, which could short them out. Make sure you check all of the electrical functions before buying it.

    That's a clean ride you have there. My first car was a '79 Rabbit, and it was a lot of fun to drive, because it handled very well. Unfortunately, VW decided to locate the antenna lead-in wire right above the fuse box, which shorted part of it out. I had toggle switches to operate the cooling fan and the fuel pump lol
