    Great breakdown. I canceled my order earlier today for the x100vi and ordered this camera. The wait for the x100vi is just ridiculous and feel this one will meet my needs better, especially with video. I've a diehard Canon user, but have been wanting a Fuji camera for awhile now and can't wait for it's arrival next week.

    What a fantastic little camera, I skipped the XS10 when I knew this was coming with the same sensor, newer processor and bigger battery. Perfect upgrade for me, and I prefer the 26mp sensor over the 40pm sensor. So, this is it for me.

    I bought the X-S20 and I love it for shooting video. I also wanted to just say how much I enjoy your videos. In the CZcams world where thumbnails are excessive in trying to grab your attention, I can always spot your thumbnails and gravitate to them. They’re calm. The font is beautiful and there’s a consistency about them that I find very pleasing. 🎉

      Yeah, the battery on the XS10 was always an issue. I think it's the only Fuji camera with in body stabilisation which uses that smaller battery, and you can see the battery just can't deal with it efficiently. This however...the battery level is incredible in my usage.

    • @Greggiexplore
      @Greggiexplore Před rokem

      I have S10 and video stabilization often creates "wobbly" effect, not happy how stabilization was implemented on video features. For stills is ok. I was doing landscape photography in Wilsons Prom - Australia using Canon 6D mark 2 and Fuji S10 ... images were better from Canon, Fuji created kind of washed out colors, did not like it.

    • @Durio_zibethinus
      @Durio_zibethinus Před rokem

      @@Greggiexplore I wouldn't trust video stabilisation in camera, not even the mighty Lumix GH series, a gimbal will be more practical and cheaper that way.
      For image preference is subjective matter, so to each their own.
      But I see where you're coming from, Canon has a likeable colour and the RAW is easy to handle.

    Great video as always, Andy. I’d be curious to see a comparison between the x-s20 and the X-t4, especially for shooting video. The specs seem similar between the 2, and the price is also comparable considering it’s easy to find the xt-4 (new) at a discounted price (here in Sweden anyway). I feel like the battle would come down to the retro look and handling of the X-t4 vs the updated processor and better portability of the X-s20. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +11

      Thanks for the comment Michael. I no longer have an X-T4 to compare it too, but I think you're right in that a lot of the difference will be down to personal preference of how the different cameras feel. The X-S20 has considerably better battery life and with the new processor I suspect it will be able to record for longer...and of course you have 6.2K. I think the X-S20 is probably a better video camera in terms of specs and what it's capable of doing, and the grip is probably better for video, but the X-T4 has weather sealing, dual cards and the analogue dials.

    Really appreciate your videos and insights. Love that this has the new battery. As much as this has, I'm finding more and more that the fully articulated screen just isn't for me. Wish more cameras had the screen that the X-E4 has. One question, can you take photos while the X-S20 is recording video?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I fully understand what you say about the screen as I prefer the articulated screen of the XT5 and GFX, but when it comes to making vlogs (and Fuji are clearly pitching this at that market) you really need the flip around screen. The X-E4 one is great, but works because that camera has a flat top plate. This has the big flash bulge, so the screen would need really long hinges to be able to reach up over that be usable.

      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +2

      It's a shame, but there's always someone disappointed at every camera launch because they wanted different features, or a different camera to be announced. The X-S10 was a very big seller though, so it's logical that this is the camera they announced, and the autofocus and battery actually make a big difference to still photographers.

    I don’t understand why people complain about the X-S series or X-H for that matter
    Fujifilm can’t be Fanservice: The Camera Company forever and ever, they have to make cameras for the masses to have money to make cameras for us that like the way Fuji is
    They’re not losing their soul, they’re just forced to walk a path, better than dying entirely like Olympus

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +9

      Hahaha, me neither. I see many comments like that...to be honest, it surprises me how toxic the fanbase for cameras can be. Photography is a passion, and apart from it being how I make my living, it's something I take a huge amount of pleasure from. Surely, we all get into photography for the joy it can give us?! So I'm constantly surprised by how angry people can get about cameras. Fuji are a small company, and still manage to cover most bases photographically, but there will always be people who get angry because a company that's trying to survive in a highly competitive market doesn't make the exact product with the exact features that they think should be made.

    Hi Andy, thanks for the review! I'm thinking about switching from the X-T2 to the X-S20 and I don't really care about most "pro features" on the high-end bodies like dual card slots and weather sealing or the analog dials. My only concern is the viewfinder - do you find it too small or is it not that noticeable after a certain period?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +8

      Thanks for the comment. When I had the camera it was pre-launch and I didn't have the specs, so I didn't have the details on the resolution and size of the EVF, but I can't say I noticed it in a negative way, or that it was a problem. I'm used to switching between the GFX, XT5 and XS10, and for sure sometimes I do notice the size when I first change, but within a couple of minutes I'm used to it and stop noticing it.

    Hello Andy. Love your videos. I just ordered the X-S20 and plan to use it just for video. I have a lot of XF lenses and will keep one of my x-t3 cameras for photography. For me that suits my needs right now. I may even use the X-S20 for macro handheld shots with the image stabilization, since my x-t3 does not have IBIS. I completely agree with you on the analog dials. I much prefer them over PSAM. Now that I will have both, so I’ll have an opportunity to see if that is still the case. Does anyone have this issue when shooting video in a custom mode? Every time I move the dial to a custom mode, the shutter speed goes to the wrong setting (not the SS i have set).
    For example, I have C1 set to 4K60p with the shutter speed set to 120. Every time i move to another setting and back to C1, the SS moves to 60 and doesn't let me change it unless I go into the Q menu. The custom mode is set to video and manual.

    Thanks for the time put in your review!
    Im a Canon owner (R5) and i love that camera, however... as i dont need to explain to you, its chunky even only with something of a 24-105 f4L
    So i noticed that i tended to only carry it with me when i deliberately go out for shooting, but not anymore on a casual walk, especially when i travel somewhere (say to meet friends) and then we go on a spontaneous walk. And i sort of miss that. So im looking for a "Backup" (i dont mean that in a negative way) camera i can "throw" in my bag without much thought and carry with me for those occasions where i would usually not grab my heavy R5... and i always wanted a fuji. I do prefer the looks of the XT30/XT5 espeeeecially in silver but in the end, i want a camera to use not to look at :D However, my brain (im a engineer and thats my curse) challanges my intentions hard with thoughts "why dont you switch fully, sell your canon gear and go X-T5 only" etc. ... and my GAS is not yet strong enough to just impulse buy something.
    So i was wondering when you said you took the X-S10 as a backup camera... whats your thoughts on having a main camera with all bells and whistles for specific stuff and a carry on camera.
    Is there anything in your expirience that could help me make up my mind?
    (If id buy it, id probably get the S20 over the S10 for the larger battery, together with the 18-55 f2.8-4 kit to have a flexible but compact ish package)

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem

      Thanks for the comment. When I say I use it as a back up camera, what I mean is that it's used as a second camera alongside either my XT5 or GFX. With the XT5 I use it alongside so I don't have to change lenses in the field, and also I always travel with two bodies in case one fails (which fortunately has never happened). With the GFX I use it purely as a video camera. It's never a camera that I take on it's own, it's always a secondary camera

      Thanks for your comment. That's an interesting question and I don't have an answer as I didn't use it with either of those lenses (although I'll be using it with the 150-600mm in June). I used the X-S10 with those lenses, which is what I based my comment on, but I don't remember having a problem with there no being space. I would say this is the pretty much exactly the same as there's the same distance between the lens mount and the beginning of the grip. The extra thickness of the grip is what makes the camera a little longer, rather than reducing the space between grip and lens

    Hi Andy, thank you for this comprehensive review and for the great content you keep on posting. I want to buy my first camera to learn photography in preparation for a trip to Namibia in 18 months and I am hesitating between the XT5 and the XS20.
    I will use it for stills 95% of the time, so the video capabilities are not that important. I will use it mainly for travel and street photography and to capture family moments. I do not see myself getting into postproduction, cropping, etc…
    I was thinking about starting with a zoom kit lens and maybe a 23mn f2 prime to learn and grow.
    Which camera would you recommend for a beginner please ? Do you believe that starting with a PASM camera would impair my learning journey?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před rokem +4

      Neither camera will impair your learning journey as they're both fantastic tool for photography, so when it comes to controls you should go with what feels the most natural. Then it comes down to which other things you like. The XT5 has a bigger and better viewfinder, dual cards and more robust build...but it's also bigger and heavier, so which of those matters to you.
      The XT5 also has higher resolution of 40mp. People tend to put more value on megapixels than they should as for the most part they only matter if you're printing larger or cropping deep. Sure, you'll notice a difference in Lightroom when you zoom in to 100%, but in terms of output, you won't see any difference at all on a print below 60cm, or on an image that's been resized for web. So how important are large prints to you?
      You can't go wrong with either camera, and I suggest trying them both out in a camera shop to see what feels right. Particularly the controls and EVF

I am actually on the lookout for my first "proper/serious" camera rather than just using my pixel phone on my travels and I found your channel while looking for reviews on this particular camera. How would you say this camera would be for a beginner to photography? I would mainly be looking for still portraits, landscape and city scenes and maybe the odd wildlife thrown in as well. I would like something relatively easy to pick up and use but which would allow me to improve my skills overtime i.e. I would prefer a camera to be useful for a good few years, rather than a beginner camera and then switch to a different one down the road. I have read some good things about Fujifilm cameras taking photos which are decent "out of the box" but wanted to ask you about this. The X-S20 looks a good bet for me and being pretty new, should be reasonably future proofed for my needs as well. Are there any other cameras that you would suggest? Ideally, id be looking for something up to about £1.5k for camera + lens. Lastly, if you think that the X-S20 would be a good option for me, would the XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS lens kit be the one that you recommend? Or would the base camera and a separate lens be the right option? Sorry for the long and detailed question, hope you are somewhere other than the UK at the moment!

The Fuji has 6.2k open gate, 2 more stops of IBIS, better webcam with film sims, no overheating in video, better battery, better screen, joystick, fuji colours, some unique great lenses - so that's a lot to love! - but if you're not in focus, what's the point?

I like that Sony have bulletproof autofocus no matter what, making it so easy for filming myself, focus breathing correction (those F2 Fuji primes have terrible focus breathing!), 120fps 4k is cool, water resistance, higher ISO range (better in low light?), the same lenses are normally 20-30% cheaper for Sony. Yep. Large? Covered. I mean, come on. Sony/Canon/Nikon aren't trying this hard. I'm a former Sony shooter. Why former? Because I can't stand my camera and it's sitting somewhere abandoned, with a dead battery. It stifled my love for photography. Only Fuji makes me want to shoot again. All I have to do is decide which one of these great options to buy!

      It's hard to show image quality accurately on a video..you're seeing a 26mp image that's been compressed into a 4k timeline, and then compressed again for rendering and internet upload. the image quality though is identical to the XS10 and XT4

    Hi Andy, I'm evaluating getting an X-T5 or X-S20. I mostly capture landscapes or streets in my travels and I always use one lens (18-55mm with my X-T1). It's always still, never video. Weight and compactness are reasons I keep going back to X-T1. That's the reason I am gravitating towards X-S20. The main factor is prices are very close on the X-T5 body and X-S20 where I'm located and the weight difference is not that huge. But as a package size and weight, I feel there is a significant difference between the X-T5 and X-S20. I know you mentioned that it can be an excellent primary camera. Do you think I'll lose anything by not getting X-T5 if we ignore weather sealing, manual dials and double memory card?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Před 5 měsíci

      Apart form the things you said, no, I don't think you're missing much. The XT5 does have a better EVF and I prefer the articulating screen for photography over the flip out screen of the XS20 (particularly if you're using an L-bracket). The XS20 however, does have a better handgrip for handheld shooting

      This was a pre-launch camera and as is typical, it didn't the firmware it will have at launch and the menus sometimes don't work as smoothly as they should. The menu wouldn't scroll when I was testing it, although I should probably have looked at the XS10 to see if it was possible there.

      @@AndyMumford thanks for replying. I see when you right-arrow into the Fn-D options from the Function Setting screen (at 5:38 of your review), that you are on page 5/5 for Fn-D Dial Settings on the Fn Dial Setting screen at 5:40 of the video). This is similar on the X-S10. The default setting of Fn-D is at the end of a long list. This confused me and many reviewers but eventually I realized that you only need to scroll up to an earlier page of available options to choose ISO for that dial.
      What you say at 5:45 is flat out wrong and you should correct the video.

    I have an X-E4 and am contemplating an upgrade for either the X-S20 or X-T5, I dont do videos at all just photos. I still didnt handled the cameras in person, and since you know very well both models I would like to hear your points on my pros and cons for each model from my perspective. On the X-S20 side I see as pros the smaller, the grip, the 26M sensor (smaller files, I do not print) and PASM, it feels to ne it is easier to grip and control the camera one-handed with PASM and the control dials. The cons for X-S20 would be a smaller darker viewfinder. I do not mind the flip screen. As for the X-T5 for me the major pro would a better viewfinder but not sure how much better. The rest seems all cons, heavier, larger files, not that easy to operate fully one handed. Thoughts? The buttons between the two models feel nice on both? Os is the S20 a bit cheaper in the feeling, Thank you for such an excellent review on both models!

      I think you already know which you prefer. It's a really subjective thing, a lot of what you see as advantage of the XS20 are things I prefer on the XT5 (bigger grip, more resolution, I don't like PASM and don't like the flip screen), so it's very personal. But it's clear from your comment that you know which camera you prefer, so just go with what you feel 😉

      Apologies for the cut/paste reply:
      It's entirely possible. The camera I had didn't have the latest firmware (it's usual with pre-launch cameras) and there were a couple of things missing in the menu (and some menus weren't accessible). I got the camera with no manual, and the only specs were the weight, two of the dimensions, and battery life, so I had to work out a lot of it myself. Hmm, well I'll start this with the caveat that it's a personal thing, but I honestly believe that this is an issue that has been a little exaggerated. I mentioned in the video when I was showing the foliage that you couldn't see any of the worms, but if you zoomed into 400% maybe you would.
      My own experience as someone who shoots professionally and sells prints, is that it's not an issue. I rarely bother looking at my files at more than 100% because no-one will ever view the files like that, and I'm careful about how I apply sharpening.
      I've used Fuji cameras with Lightroom for 8 years, and (again, speaking for myself personally), it's not an issue.

      I find Lightroom a little disappointing when compared to other RAW processors, but in recent years the gap is smaller than it was. The worms are due to over sharpening …. The default in Lightroom is too heavy handed for Fuji files …. I apply an import preset so it reduces worms. To be honest all cameras produce worms if they are over sharpened. I find some images with lots of foliage to be slightly off sometimes, so use Lightroom’s Enhance function …. It helps and creates a separate DNG file that matches most other RAW editors. I have trialled DXO Pure RAW recently and it was amazing the details rendered (I think there is some AI used when it creates an extra DNG file). Ian Worth did a you Tube video recently and he got similar detail printing to A1 or A0 size using a FF Canon R5 with 24-70 to a Fuji XH2 & 16-55 when he used Pure Raw 3
