I'm becoming more and more convinced that engines are merely the accessory to the turbo and not the other way around. "What size engine do you have attached to your turbo."
Rockets are jokingly referred to as turbopumps with some other stuff attached. Over half of the design time in building a new rocket is in the turbomachinery.
Might as well call that engine a hybrid jet turbine/internal combustion engine.
Look into the Miller cycle. The piston and the turbine- compressor/expander are complementary. Each have an area in the heat cycle where they're at their best at extracting energy from the working medium.

Absolutely! In 2001 I was invited to spend the day in the pits at Heartland Park with the owner of a '95 pro-stock Camaro. Early in the day, this guy shows up to tune and take turns making qualifying runs. The guy was all business and hyper-focused. The fastest car there and the best driver. Watching him leave the line from the staging area was unbelievable. Just vanished. Larry is an icon.

I gotta say Mr Larson is one of my favorite because he builds the chassis, drives, engine builder and he is his own tuner. He does it all and not many can say that while winning.
I agree he is a certified badass.
That Turbo must be the engine on it's own, adding an engine is just overkill.
The engine is only there to keep the car moving while the turbo spools. Legend has it the engine cuts out when boost reaches peak

I remember when I was younger watching Larry Larson when I lived in Missouri. He was a beast 25 yes ago and to this day still a force to be reckoned with.

Looks like a turbo from a large marine diesel engine. Saw a few being sold for $50/ea at a surplus yard in S. Texas about 10yrs ago.

Saw a train turbo once it was 3 ft tall.
Those things are indeed huge. I've worked at a couple GE plants where they make the trains and even one where they rebuild the engines. They are no joke and the engines are as big as a room lol.
