Perhaps the most successful and iconic American racing car ever built, the Ford GT40 has become an automotive icon to many enthusiasts. In so many ways, the GT40 helped shape automotive history by being so successful in its era against the European manufacturers who had dominated sports car racing for far too long.
When Ferrari backed out of the deal with Ford, Henry Ford II decided that if he could not buy the legendary sports car builder, he would beat them at their own game-and that is just what the GT40 did. Ferrari’s last win at Le Mans was in 1965 with its 250 LM, and at that time, Ford was just beginning to gain steam with its GT program. By 1966, Ferrari’s Le Mans dynasty was at an end, and Ford not only won, sweeping 1-2-3 in 1966, but its GT40 put America at the top of the podium at the Circuit de la Sarthe every year until 1969.
Despite its major success on the race track, only 30 GT40 MkI examples were specifically built for use on the road. These examples featured similar mechanical specifications to their race-winning counterparts but were outfitted with a few more luxuries for comfortable use, including fully upholstered interiors. Mechanically, they utilized softer suspension settings, more compliant brakes and a quieter exhaust. These GT40s were still very much racing cars, even though intended for the open road. As a result, many of them wound up in the hands of privateers looking to either take them racing or get the closest possible experience to driving on a race track, albeit on public roads.
On November 14, 1966, this example was delivered to Italy to its original owner Antonio Allecce after completion at the Ford Advanced Vehicles factory in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England. It was delivered new in this stunning shade of Metallic Dark Blue and powered by the High Performance 289 CI V-8 with Weber carburetors and the standard ZF 5-speed transaxle. Additional extras ordered included a high-pressure oil pump, a special race exhaust system in addition to road exhaust, and a spare wheel and tire, as documented by its original build sheet.
A few years later, Allecce sold his GT40 to Ferrari works driver Umberto Magioli, whose driving accolades included three wins at the Targa Florio, Carrera Pan America and a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Magiloli fell in love with the Ford GT40 after driving one alongside Bob Bondurant at the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hours and had to have one for himself for road use.
After very minimal use, Magiloli sold this GT40 to his friend, Augusto Coli of Fino Monarsco, just south of Como. Coli owned the car for almost 15 years before putting it up for sale with a dealer in London, stating the car had never been raced. Shortly thereafter, the car was sold to a new owner in West Germany who had the car displayed in the Nürburgring Museum for several years.
The car traded hands again to another owner in West Germany who set out to restore this GT40 road car to how it left FAV when new. The task was given to RUF Automobiles; although known for its incredible Porsche-based sports cars, it’s been known to take on restoration projects that Alois Ruf found interesting. Starting with the highly original 13,500-mile example helped make the process easier, as the car had never seen any trauma. After several years and thousands of man hours, the result was a concours-quality finish capable of being shown, as well as being used and enjoyed on the road where it belongs.
The ultra-rare, road-going GT40 Mk1 is often referred to as the most beautiful variant of the GT40 with its additional trim and Borrani wire wheels. It’s an ideal acquisition for any sports car enthusiast to purchase what is practically a Le Mans-winning car suited for the road. This example is well documented by noted marque expert Ronnie Spain with a comprehensive history dossier, and it’s a ticket to be invited to any concours d’elegance and private tours, as well as vintage sporting events including the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The GT40 is the epitome of sports car design and achievement, and it’d certainly be the crown to any collection of postwar racing cars. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I was part of the bidding pack in this one.
I was anticipating winning the bid and adding this beauty to my collection.
I had a figure that I could go to but realized quickly that I would be forced to tap into other accounts if I was TRULY going to take this one home.
After all the yahoos were eliminated it was time for the big boys to finish the game.
Unfortunately, I was unable to win.
I was out at $11,700
Yeah I was right there with you, then I realized that I already have 4 and if I added this to the collection I would have an odd number and I don't like odd numbers so I had to pass
I was the guy that outbid you at 11,800 then I was out bid
BAH HA HA HA HA!!! 😂😂😂 $11,700? BAH HA HA HA HA!!!
You lasted a lot longer than me.

I miss your livestreams on YT!
Nick Mason …drummer for Pink Floyd bought his 62 GTO Ferrari in 1974 for $47,000.00 …he still has it and it’s worth over 40,000,000.00 And he drives it…sometimes with Brian Johnson of AC/DC…😀….the two of them are car nuts…and good friends..😀😀.
No car is ever worth 40million
What does this have to do with a 66 GT40?…
Not a god damn thing…the gt 40 has been my favorite car ever since I was a kid….have a nice day bozo…🤣🤣
@@paulciprus9582 ~ me so Bozo….

Easily the blue oval star of Kissimmee 2024. Those 6 cars Tim Wellborn sold were each outstanding in their own right.
But that 66GT40... WOW!
The Petersen Museum has one in pale blue, beautiful and iconic !
We currently have this GT sitting in our grapevine, Texas detail shop along with 10 other ford gts. Probably the best ford gt collection right now in the southwest and yes the car is driven weekly
Wonderful example of how form following function created an epically beautiful car.

Worth every penny. What a special car, and that color!! Wow what a piece of automotive history
This is a piece of art. Should be in a museum. Beautiful 😍
It can go t9 a museum after the stop selling fuel ;)
It's a road legal version of the historic race car, it deserves to be driven and seen by many at cars & coffee!
He will drive it 🤣That’s my uncle
@@heathbeard6972yeah we have Shawn’s car collection sitting in our detail shop in grapevine, Tx. Along with his 4 other gt he recently got. It sounds so good in person.
Ford GT 40 Greatest American car ever! 🚗 🇺🇸
With only 30 manufacturered, this car will only go up in value.
Worth every cent
My brother and I saw one parked on South Lake Ave. across the street from Bullocks in Pasadena Ca. It was painted gold and the most beautiful automobile I have ever seen I wish I would of waited for the owner to return I often wonder who it was...
No Hemi, L88, Ram Air, or ZL-1's getting close to that.
The only other American supercar/race car that will come close is the Shelby Daytona! Carroll Shelby is THEE American legend!
Very true
Legendary Ford!!! ✌️❤️😊
Garbage Motors and JUNK dodge SUCK.😂
Every car you mentioned were obtainable by the general public. Kinda hard to compare prices
I am a Chevy guy, but that was monumental.
So am I but the Ford GT has always been that rare halo model that is head and shoulders above corvette. As it still is now.
This example is one of the most beautiful things on four wheels ever.
Forgot about the Pantera that came after the Gt40. Then Ford and Lotus worked a deal out. Under the table is why the 80s Lotus was mostly a Pantera.
@batvette It may have been but it always been an extremely high priced limited production vehicle. Not much of a comparison. The Z07 now for more than 1/10 the price can beat it. The upcoming ZR1 will probably kill it. The C8 is not a joke and it will only get better and still cost far less. It's practical, the GT40 is beautiful buy it is not.
@briansalisbury5760 V6 twin turbo Gt smokes the C8. Gt500 beats any Vette. Even the early 2000s Gt40 smoked Vettes. So Chevy said we can't beat them let's join them in designs. So Chevy stole Ferrari's and Ford's designs with some also from Lamborghini to build the C8. Chevy has admitted they have Vettes over 100k now as well. Can't beat Ford just doesn't happen. Cause they will always will come out better. Sucks cause I miss Pontiac. Pontiac wasn't 100% of GM so that's how they did what they did with the Trans AM and Firebirds. Will so ever miss Pontiac. I own 2 of them. 1 has a Ford engine though.
@@lincolnls0416 Well I will say bullshit. Look on CZcams if you do not believe me. Last test I saw on a standing start the Z06 beat it in the quarter-mile. Not too many cars are smoking the Z06. Maybe a very expensive McLaren. The ZR1 will most likely solve that problem. The GT 500 at a standing start smokes its tires The Vette with its engine over the back wheels and superior traction control does not lose to a Shelby. That is also on CZcams in many different videos. Do you your research before letting your bias cloud your mind. I will be glad to send you the links. Besides the GT40 and GT500 are limited production vehicles. Lingerfelter builds Z06'S and Z07's that would kill either of them for less money. You underestimating the Vette shows you really have no idea what you are talking about. Every review I have read or seen has been nothing but astonishment and utmost respect for it as a genuine supercar.
Beautiful
ICON 😮
Why does the title say it sold for $6.93 when it sold for $6.3?
10% buyers premium fee is added.
Seen a original 289 road car GT40 pull into VanDusen gardens car show in Vancouver BC early 1990's drove it right off the street sounded wicked and was no trailer queen, heard it was locally owned hobby raced at local track (Westwood) cant confirm any of it but I stood right next to it, wonder where it is now.
I remember seeing one on Broadway in the 70's by the old Safeway near alma.
Only went for $6,300 Million!
You gotta 10% fee that goes to Mecum
This is insane for something that will set somewhere and be worshipped
Jealous.
Hell !!!! Some guy just paid 6 million I think for a 30 year old bottle of whiskey 😮😮😮

For once a car with the correct seating position iis sold at the correct price
@Shmee150 I wonder if you seen this!!😮

Ok but the title doesn't say that. Clearly shows the figure it sold at auction. If they charge a 5 million dollar fee. It still sold for 6.3 million plus a 5 million dollar fee.Matter of wording I suppose😅
Caption says sold for 6.93 million . It sold for 6.3 million get it straight. Let me guess it's a typo error. Wrong information is what it is😅
Auctions charge the owner a fee if they buy. It's a $7 million dollar car after it's insured, titled, and registered.
Hello, Vatozone? I need a fan belt for a 1966 Ford GT 40..
Drive it like you stole it.
So easy to say when it ain’t your money…kind of dumb too given condition and originality. A smarter move would be to now buy a Superformance built to match for $140k and beat that instead.
@@markhale8084 When you got silly money like some of these chxmps do what's it matter? For historical purposes all that's needed is one that's all the rest should be thourolly flogged and enjoyed, We don't need ten and hundreds of these cars just sitting for some rich guy to walk out in his garage and jerk off to it
MWhere’d $6.9 come from?? Still, $6.3M is a LOT of money for something that’ll, sadly, never be driven.
Only $6.3 million?
Shame a beautiful car like this will just and collect dust.
Too bad none of these buyers will be able to drive it down route 66 with the windows open, and not worry about being carjacked. Like when the car was built.
I am a car guy all the way but a six million dollar car is so, so expensive that you would think that any
owner would be too anxious to even drive it around the block !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Y'all decided to make stream even harder as it is, it's almost like you don't want to sell things.
Tiresome banter.
Where’s Stephen?
He’s recovering
6.3million
misleading title it was sold for $6.3m not $6.9 as the title says
Jebus! 6.8 million for a GT40 that DIDN'T race. I could only imagine what the Le Mans cars that did race would go for.
Sad part, is i can guarantee that who ever bought that, will NEVER EVER drive it
For the Rich people to get Tax cuts for the year..
sad that regular people can’t afford these cars.
off to Saudia arabia
Such a shame super rich people get these cars.
All over the world. Any classic car is out of reach.
They put them in car care and never love the one.
Only 30 built for the road. Which were pretty much the track car with little mods to make it street legal. It's worth that 6 million and more. In another decade it will be worth way over 10 million or even more. Most awsome American race/super car ever built!
Built in Britain. 🙂
@@grahambell4298 I assumed it was built in the United States? You learned me something I didn't know. 😁
@@robtruckingbear7336 Mk1 and Mk3 (Mk3 was officially the road going version) were built in UK. Mk2 was essentially a Mk1 modified in US to take the 427 engine. Only the Mk4 built in US.
@@grahambell4298 Yes, a lot of people don't realize that the GT40s were built in the UK and most are right-hand drive. Occasionally one runs across people who don't even know that Ford ever built cars in Britain.
Over 6 mil.. no way.. maybe a few hundred thousand. Children are going hungry, that is where it should be spent. My dad who's now 103, sold his never registered Dodge Daytona for 300k, all proceeds went to doctors without borders..
Want a cookie? Preach elsewhere
Maybe all those starving people should stop having kids?
I know they wanted to do the commentary, but they absolutely should have done it before the bidding started. The bidding was the coolest part and they were gabbing about info most anyone knew and seemed they didn't realize how fast and how high the bidding was going. I feel they really screwed the pooch with the direction they went presenting this bid. Coordinate and roll the car out slower if u must do all that commentary but for goodness sakes, we missed all of the bidding. Good grief.
whatever you can get a nice replica for 300,000~ 😂
What so special about this vehicle?
no one is coming near that car. it drives on and off...no pushers on this one. the body is probably too fragile to risk that.
very quiet there. i like that. barrett jackson would be louder.
And sell way fewer cars. Buyers are gravitating to Mecum now, because of the variety. BJ is quieting down over the last few years. They still sell a lot but aren’t on TV as much as they used to be, which is also telling.
666 car❤
Too much talking, woyld have prefered to listen to the auction.
It sold for 6.3m not 6.93
rich person’s Bingo
Ridiculous
That GT40 was not built by Ford, It was built by the fellow who built body panels for Ford's GTs, he asked permission to build the car and Ford said he could, but it was not built by Ford.
Ford commissioned the build
Ford commissioned the build
Ford commissioned the build
Ford commissioned the build
Ford commissioned the build
Too many ppl talking at once
Hideous rims
It’s not a Ford, it’s a Lola. Ford didn’t have the intelligence to create a winning sports car as they in,y made bricks. They had to farm it out to the Europeans who had more intelligence.
Just like when England had to farm it out to the Americans when they wanted to win WWII By the way, you're wrong It's not a Lola, It's a Ford, designed and engineered by John Wyer and built by Ford Special Vehicle Operations in England and Karkraft in America, based on two Lolas purchased by Ford Look it up and learn something...
ford guy here, ur dumba s comment falls on deaf ears clown
You don't drive a car like that. It's an investment. Park it for 10 years, and sell it, double your $
