  • Every Monday morning, police officers and city crews show up in the East Village to move out the hundreds of homeless people living there. By late afternoon, the homeless are back. KPBS reporter Susan Murphy takes us to downtown San Diego’s tent city.

The longer you are homeless the more emotionally and mentally ill you become. It gets to a point where it then becomes hard to get out. I was homeless in San Francisco and San Diego and way up in Arcata North California. Thank God I had two skills of being a street drummer and I made handcrafted Jewellery. When I was living in San Diego I used to catch the train over to Tijuana and buy semi-precious stones there. They were very cheap. I finally dealt with some of those mental issues that I was dealing with and got back into my profession as a mental health case manager believe it or not. Now I'm retired living on a pension doing volunteer work in a kindergarten class 4 days a week for 5 hours. Back in my hometown in Detroit Michigan. It was quite a journey for 10 years moving around the country

I have a question for you, if people had someone to give them a base to stay, shower, etc, would homeless people get jobs and live better. I am a real estate investor who specializes in bad areas. After I moved out of the house with my ex I was technically homeless. I had a large amount of money and rental homes but I didn’t have a place to stay. I slept in nice hotels but I got a glimpse into homelessness. Showering so important.

What works well is pose it in a question versus making a statement.
Also invite them to explore what the Bible says about hypocrisy?!?! and who are hypocrites?!?! and what happened to hypocrites!?!?!
We also have to regularly do self-evaluation according to the biblical principles to make sure that we are not hypocrites ourselves pointing the finger at others calling them hypocrites!!!!
The Bible says judge NOT with contempt but to JUDGE “correctly”
Let the Word judge them, not us.
Let their actions and lifestyle choices judge them against the biblical principles.

@@washredskin887 I respect that perspective, and as you probably know downtown became unaffordable as it came to have more tall higher-cost apartment buildings, displacing lower-income residents. Also, the housing supply throughout our state hasn't kept up with demand for decades. A large proportion of people were living here when one day they couldn't make the rent, either because of an unexpected expense or low wages or because the landlord raised rents because of that very problem. It's a complicated problem. People have to understand that changing zoning laws to allow more housing to be built fast enough to keep up with demand will help reduce the growth in people experiencing homelessness. Yes, a lot of people come here to take advantage of programs and some are here from other states, but there are shelter programs in even the red states. However, downtown was once a very affordable place, then they put all the buildings. I'm not like an anti-gentrification activist. The problem is both displacement caused by gentrification, and the lack of supply and government costs driving the developers to raise rents. Homelessness has to do with housing in addition to a lot of other issues, but a lot of republicans don't talk about the housing element of the issue. I believe in having everyone who accepts it has a shelter bed, which is what they're doing now. Also job training, mental health, and drug counselors. Housing is mainly what many people need, but it should be done on a case-by-case basis.
California is an expensive state because of many things, mainly its strong economy due to the jobs here, but it doesn't mean that housing should just be a commodity where it goes to the highest bidder, displacing previous residents. It's not like everyone should have the right to live here, but housing can be decommodified such that the developer doesn't need to make a profit in addition to breaking even, Singapore's or Austria's model. CA AB 387 of 2021 just studies those types of models. Housing is a complicated issue. And I know there's compassion fatigue, but not all of these people made bad choices, it's just that housing here is very expensive.

Same building 20 yrs later it was $2300 (not including utilities) with Cable add $60 and with Utilities add $170-250, around $2600 after everything. We got him in an apartment in a month I helped with a boarding house room at 120 a week at first until then. He worked hard and his only vice is bud light which he isn't that bad. He really just needed a chance and someone to believe in him he thanks me all the time and always tries to help others. The other had a totally different mentality he just wanted money for doing nothing, instead of an Holy rate he wanted to get paid by the job. As if he were driving his self and not using my tools entirely, he made excuses would disappear but I still tried to help. I gave up after 2 weeks or so he was content with his existence and didn't want more I noticed alot of them are just trying to get free money and free stuff.

I was homeless in Hollywood for one day in February, 1990.
I sneaked into Griffith Park, at the gate, at the end of Canyon
Park Drive. I slept for a few hours, holding onto my Irish Wolf-
hound Rory for warmth. During the night, I woke up, to see two
green eyes staring at me in the dark. It was a curious coyote
checking us out. Rory didn't chase it off, as he usually did.
It really was a special moment. Later that day, I was picked
up by a Cadillac limousine and was fortunate enough to be
housed in a mansion in Whittier for three months, until
I got on my feet again. I was the lucky exception. It was
a harrowing experience I will never forget. This email

@@nancyayers6355 I am a nurse and dental hygienist. I do local volunteer work and international humanitarian aid work. I have done a considerable amount of volunteer work with the homeless providing dental-medical aid. This includes skid row in LA. I praise GOD everyday that I have food, shelter, and water. I have compassion, sympathy, and love for every person I help. Context is everything. Each person has a story. Some are victims of violence. Not every homeless person is an addict or drunk. You never know when you could end up homeless or without. The restroom issue is tricky. In skid row when they installed street restrooms the gangsters started to charge the homeless for access. It made things worse. When you actually work with the homeless you learn that this issue is very complicated and solutions are difficult to implement. You should watch the "invisible people" videos regarding homelessness. Also, I have worked with homeless families with babies and children. They need prayers, money, healthy food, shelter, water, jobs, compassion, and a hand up. This issue will not be solved with hate or malicious attacks against homeless individuals. When you actually work with the homeless community you really learn how we as a society have failed them.

Freeloading off of the tax payers in the US. Regardless if there are homeless Americans doing the same the Americans are US citizens.
