  • In this short travel blog video I'll share the highlights of my weekend away in Gdansk and will tell you the historical fun facts I learned along the way.
Gdansk is a lovely city rich in history from being the epicenter of the shipyard strikes leading to freedom from the Soviet Union, to Amber Road or the beginning of the second World War... You'll also see a bit of the polish independence day parade in this beautiful sea port...
To see more of its WW2 history check my other video:

I live here and I definitely wouldn't call it a secred, we get swarmed with tourists in warmer months. I would definitely recommend venturing outside old town a little bit, and maybe visiting Sopot and Gdynia too - the Tricity has soooo much to offer beyond the "touristy" spots.

Yes I will have to come back to see Sopot and Gdynia, maybe one day in warm months.
"Secret" was to have a catchy title being such a beautiful city I am sure you host thousands of tourists every month...

Thanks for the offer but at the moment I generate very little income so I do everything myself. If one day I become bigger and need assistance I will keep your contact 😊

That is a brilliant video Nathalie, thanks so much for taking us to Gdańsk. As for the Solidarity movement, I would add information on its world-famous leader Lech Wałęsa, the laureate of the Peace Nobel Prize and the 1st democratically elected Polish President after WWII.

You can find the discussion about the streetsign here : czcams.com/video/B3h2Rw1mHew/video.html at 08:30. I can solve it and tell you that the sign means Playing Street (Spielstrasse) which means you are not allowed to drive over a certain limit and you should be aware of children playing on that street.

Owww it's a lollipop yeah that makes sense. Thanks!
Yes I realised it was a real sign when I saw many more. The first time I saw it I imagined it was street art.

It's nice that you visited Gdansk and enjoyed it. But if you're already passing on the news maybe check the facts and history first so you don't spread untruths on the internet afterwards. First of all, Gdańsk was destroyed by the Germans and the Russians during WW2, not the Russians themselves. WW2 started in Gdańsk because we were attacked by the Germans. Nowhere in the history books does it say that the Germans just walked into Gdańsk. There was fighting and bombing going on at the time.
Secondly, the houses in the old town are not Danish houses, but houses built in a similar style by HANZA member cities. Thirdly, do not use the word Nazis only Germans and not Soviets but Russians as you are already talking about the 2WW. Neither the Nazis nor the Red Army were some kind of UFO from outer space but they had their own nationality and it was these 2 countries that were responsible for the war and the horrors that happened in Europe and the world at that time.

      Hi Rene,
Thanks for watching and thanks for your input although some of your comments confused me. What do you mean by "passing on the news" ? What news?
Yeah you are absolutely right it takes 2 armies to destroy a city. Maybe I did not express that properly.
I don't remember saying anything about "danish houses" I would have to watch the video again.
In terms of choosing the term "Nazis" not Germans. I prefer to say Nazis to distance them from the German population of today. Personally I think it's nicer but it's just a choice of vocabulary I am not sure why that would upset anyone.

Too sad, that this German city is now under foreign control. My grandma did come from Danzig and told us a lot of stories. Also here started WW2, when Poland tried to occupy the "Freie Reichsstaat" indirectly. The Poles did here in1939 the same what Russia did 2014 in Crimea and Donbass, with the exception that there had been no Poles in Danzig
