    My take on this: The real villain in the story is the ichorite system itself. What is revealed by the end is that this so-called immortality technology simply doesn't work reliably over the long term. Over time and multiple transfers, gaps start to develop in the memory and identity recorded in ichorite, like image fidelity gradually being lost when making a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy. Some people, like James' wife Rachel, simply become irreparably psychologically damaged, and unable to feel anything. Others, like Green, Kovalev, and eventually James himself, develop an alter-ego that grows out of these gaps in their psyche and memory. This warped alternate personality seems to invariably recognize the ichorite system as something inherently "wrong," leading them to hate immortals and immortality itself.
    Because of their age and their constant hedonistic body-hopping in Green's secret club, the oldest and most influential ichorite immortals were among the most insane and damaged, so much so that they eventually developed very complex alter-egos that collaberated with each other to form a master plan to bring down the ichorite system, without the knowledge of their original personas. I think many peoples' alter egos were potentially part of this ouroborous conspiracy, perhaps even James' own alter ego (the Stranger) by the end. For example, the President publicly promising to veto the proposed bill lowering the age when you have to start paying to keep your own body, and then suddenly reversing himself at the last minute, predictably causing outrage and mass civil unrest that played right into the conspiracy's hands. Another example is the Chief of Police, who places James under arrest in the park only to suddenly change his mind and shoot him, despite their long history together. I suspect both were overridden by their alter-egos.
    Because the ichorite system is so inherently flawed, you could almost see the alter-egos of the ouroborous society as the "good guys", except that they're cruel and spiteful, and their motivation seems to be pure hatred rather than any real sense of justice. They really don't care how many innocent people they hurt or kill to bring down the system. This is exemplified by how, at the end, the Stranger tries to get James to murder a pregnant woman (and Sara's body) by making James believe that he's possessed her through her ichorite. In the endings where James does shoot Dr. Salma, the Stranger wins even though he and James die -- it was always the plan of the alter egos to destroy even themselves, as seen with Green taking the ichorite poison and killing himself, or Kovalev blowing himself up after killing all those people at his night club. In the good ending, James finally solves the mystery, and realizes what the Stranger really is. He suppresses his alter ego long enough to unload and discard his gun, and then to connect Dr. Salma with Sara by giving her the earpiece, before taking the ichorite poison and jumping off the buiilding, in order to destroy the Stranger once and for all. The chains of ichorite he saw in his dream preventing him from reaching Rachel across the water are thus revealed to be James' own ichorite tying him to a body not his own, and preventing him from joining his wife in the true immortality of the afterlife. After he takes the poison that causes his ichorite to dissolve, James' chains are finally gone, and as he reaches the other side, we see the wounds on his wrists caused by the ichorite chains -- wounds which I believe represent The Stranger -- fade away.

    I know this game is pretty short and leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but i think it acts as proof of concept for the studio.
    For one thing, ideally, it will make money or help them get sponsors/partners for the next game they make. This game is incredibly polished for an indie debut. It also acts as a teaser for longer form games set in the same universe, since there is enough world-building to gauge audience interest in their universe.
    I understand that this style of game is not for everyone. As a point-and-click puzzler of this length and style, i think it has a lot of strengths. But i also think this style is more manageable for a small studio, and it may just be a way to prove their competency.
    I think I'll buy the game at some point just to support the developers, and hopefully in the future we can see bigger, more ambitious projects by them!

      @LukeHimself Před měsícem +3

      @@settenovetre What takes up almost the entirety of the size of a game's install is the textures.. This is why I specifically mentioned recycling of textures..
      A massive building makes zero difference in texture storage, because it recycles most of the textures used from bottom to top, and other buildings will share some, if not most, of the textures.
      Beam Breakers (2002) was 350MB, "Cloudpunk" (2019) made a massive open world game that did everything Beam Breakers did plus much more, on foot travel, free roam, etc. *_It's 7 GB because of it's art style._*
      It's not about the scale, it's about the assets.. *_Textures_*
      Example: There could be three different interior furniture sets used across the whole game, which means if the game world is 20 square meters with 3 buildings or 20,000 square meters with 3,000 buildings, it wouldn't change the storage size... as far as assets.
      The game code compresses VERY WELL, and is decompressed on the fly.
      Textures are poorly compressed, no matter what you do.
      *This is why big modern games like Deep Rock Galactic are only like 3 GB in total, installed.. Game package size is all down to the high detail textures, and how many unique textures are used.*

    • @settenovetre
      @settenovetre Před měsícem +1

      @@LukeHimself You make good points about texture size but the game's sheer scale would probably need it to be an AAA or something, and this is the studio's first work so the experience is just not there.
      Besides, recycling textures to excessive extents would result in repetitive slop that would look and feel nothing like what we see here. Cloudpunk is also a problematic example being its art style voxel-ish based, whilst I figure that an open world based on this IP would keep the visual realism.
      I recall Observer, good game from a newbie studio but nothing else was made of it except a slight remaster. I wish I could share your enthusiasm and optimism.

    So I guess the devs probably want you to get the Stranger endings on the first playthrough, as all the initial evidence points to him being the killer, meaning most first time players are likely gonna get it. But the Stranger whispers to you even after you killed Salma (which _should?_ also be the Stranger), which suggests you got it wrong. However, when replaying, they probably want you to pick different choices, which leads to re-interpretating the events as James' psychosis acting up, not the Stranger's revolutionary plot, and is the only way to achieve a satifying ending for James, by actually dying. I don't know how many people are actually gonna replay most of the same content to get a good ending though, and there's still a possibilty of fucking it up on top of that by shooting Salma, which ruins the Greene path. I imagine a lot of players are gonna get an un-satisying ending, not know about the alterntive interpretation, and leave it at that. It's a lot of grinding to do the same stuff again, with no guarantee of getting the "definitive" ending... I can't say I love the game design choice.

    Because of this, I never did what the murderer wanted me to do. I did steal the hundred year old liqour at one point, but I didn't drink it.
    The dialogue options you receive in the good ending are different than the ones you receive in the others, so the game likely decides if you’re getting the true ending long before you start the peek-and-shoot with Salma scene.
    Also. Someone said you have to go pick "closer" as soon as you get the option?
    I didn’t do that. I picked every dialgoue option until "closer" was the only thing left and the game made James run ahead automatically. I don’t know how you can consistently get the good ending, but I don’t think it has anything to do with your dialgoue choices in the final scene.

These are all simultaneously choices that play into the hands of the powerful AND they are the choices that defy the voices. The voices want you to tear down the system and bring back real death. You defy them because you think it's the murderer toying with you. But in reality, those choices are against the system and thus the good choices (I presume). So when you listen to the voices, you are fighting the system, the villain of this story. It makes sense that the good ending is the one you get when you fight the system and find out the real truth.

    This game absolutely nails the atmosphere and tone and the first few sequences are awesome but then the narrative becomes very confusing with things happening "off screen" or being introduced out of nowhere as if they cut some content due to budget reasons or time constraint. Also, the "happy" ending is obviously the best ending for this story but it's not clear enough what you have to do to achieve it which lead to the majority of players getting the bad endings and ruining the whole experience. Still, I would love to see what this team can do with more time and a bigger budget.

      During the train sequence, James says something to the effect of his fears are shaping what his hallucinations of Rachel were saying to him. With the final death ending, the Rachel that grabs his hands has a different model/kinder expression than the psycho Rachel we see through the game.
      My suspicion is that Rachel had a miscarriage or, because of the crying during the end of the train sequence, Bryan was actually born but died shortly afterwards (SIDS?) which broke Rachel (who was already struggling with synchronization) into poisoning herself and jumping. The question from there is who is supplying the poison, because the “dealer” on the train seems to have no clue what James was talking about.

    It was so disappointing to go into the second act and find the plot untangle in the worst way possible. Idk if it's the script translators fault but the dialogues stopped making sense about two hours into the game. Some responses seem completely out of the blue and have nothing to do with the line of conversation. Jokes fall completely flat due to some things being translated in a very awkward way.
    The gritty noir atmosphere, therefore, begins to really wear on the player by about hour 3 (yet another generic noir detective line and a puff of a cigarette, great, we only had about 70 of those thus far).
    And then there's the ending. Oh boy. Instead of your characters redemption or whatever arc was planned you are now a tool to rescue a body so that your detective partner can live in that body again?
    Idk what I've done wrong but I've tried to maintain an extremely good character and ended up in what seems to be the worst ending possible. And your partner leaves you a voicemail saying she'll never be able to get you out anyway?
    I still have no idea who the murderer was, or if his plan made sense, or how he implemented his plan, or what role the 20 people I spent minutes shuffling around my "vision board" even played.

    The game is great, got the Movie Blade Runner vibe numerous times, but the ending is some garbage. At the end, the game rolls into you saving a lesbian and dying yourself for nothing. In fact some super pointless endings, the villain lives, the protagonist dies for nothing, saving a generally unknown person you don't even have sympathy for. I think they could have done better, then it would have been a 10/10 game. In fact, 98% of the choices in the game don't affect the ending at all. Also, all the endings are pretty much the same, no other way, nothing, you either die, die or die, even in the “incubator” ending, you're told by Sara that you're there forever.
    Arthur Morgan saving friend John Marston, by sacrificing himself in RDR 2, with whom we went through the entire game was done wonderfully and justified. But saving some unknown lesbian friend at the risk of my life It's kind of weird. So we end up dying for a shell, just a body so Sara can be beautiful again? That's ridiculous. Why should I die for Sara old body? Why do I even want to die for her? I'd die for my wife, but she's already dead. The developers could have at least given me a reason to die. But there's no reason. That's my opinion, you may have a different one. I just think the main character deserved a better ending than this Even if he had died at the end.

      @@tidaltown Yeah i know that. But why do I care? The protagonist has known Sara for about three days and has never even seen Sara's friend. If this game is a game with choices, why not give me as a player a choice. And why should I die for her friend? The ending is literally about you saving a body shell - It doesn't change anything.. All I'm saying is that the ending could have been more emotional and made more sense. Again going back to RDR, I knew what Arthur Morgan was risking for - for his "family", for his “brother” John, but what is the protagonist in this game risking for here? It's not clear to me.
      Maybe Sara character is made in a way that doesn't allow you to soak up sympathy for her. Maybe the fact that her friend was not revealed as a character at all and we don't know anything about her and we don't know what we die for in the end. I don't know, for me personally, the whole thing could have been done better. But still, I enjoyed the game. It's a great, interesting game with a pretty good story, but with a silly ending. Reminds me of Telltale games.
