    Hello loves. This is a video I have been putting off for quite some time now but I felt like the timing was right and I should answer your questions. This is a very hard topic for me to talk about and I want to apologize if anything I said came off rude or is misunderstood, and for getting so emotional at times. I wanted to give you an insight into what has been going on in my life the past couple of years and be completely transparent with you all. It was very hard to finally record and then let the whole internet see. I will see you guys soon with a new video next week. Xoxo, Lauren

    • @hannahbrewer2197
      @hannahbrewer2197 Před 4 lety +10

      I took a gap year after high school because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life...and also because I missed all the college application deadlines (I'm a terrible procrastinator). Going into my freshman year I was super self conscious about being older than everyone else even though it was only by one year, and looking back now, I realize how ridiculous that was. I came to find that in each and every class I've taken there were always at least 5 or 6 people in their mid to late twenties (out of a group of 30, usually). I got to know a lot of them and it really put into perspective how little the timeline for one's educational career actually mattered. Like you, a lot of them joined the military beforehand or had children (or both) and put off school until they were ready. I ended up meeting my boyfriend (3 years my senior) freshman year who he himself had taken a 3 or 4 year gap after high school, and we're currently on the same level, credits-wise. It was so freeing to know that it doesn't matter how long it takes to get to where you want to be, as long as you get there eventually. Everybody's got their own path to take. I hope everything's going great for you in school!

    Next year, hopefully, I will be a 23 almost 24 year old freshman! Honestly, I feel a lot more mentally prepared for college. I had a gap life! Due to my father dying in high school, mentally I couldn't finish school. I completed it as an adult. I didn't go to college then either. I got married and had kids. I ended up at uni (that is college here in Australia) at the fantastic age of 40. I am now 46 and doing a Master of Social Work. The thing with 'plans' is that they can be changed. Life isn't a clear path. It looks like a drunk sailor on shore leave..... all over the place. But that is where the learning and adventures happen when you least expect it. And yeah I'm a 46 year old watching a 22 year old in college in the USA. Meh. Your life fascinates me (psychology major lol). But you are also really sweet so I think of you kind of like if I had of had a daughter I would hope she would have been like you.

I was going to go back when I was 21 after I had my first daughter, but life happened and I became a single mom. The main point is life will happen and it hardly ever happens how we plan, but everything happens for a purpose. Better late than never right

    I'm from Texas so I definitely, definitely, definitely know about the pressure of trying to complete specific stages in life in the "correct" order at the "correct" time that the South brings. (Totally not saying it doesn't exist anywhere else!) I've always been the youngest in my class, I graduated high school in 2017 as well, in my line of cousins, the youngest grandchild, etc. so I put the pressure of completing college and starting a family and finding a job extremely hard on myself. I feel like I have to do things even earlier than everybody because I'm 20 now and I'm about to be a senior in college. It's such a difficult mindset to shake and we shouldn't even be thinking about trying to have the perfect schedule for ourselves when clearly it's in God's hands and He never lets us down! I’m a 24 year old going through my second semester of Nursing school, and I have always felt ashamed and looked down upon because I’m a 24 year old college student. I felt that anxiety of not finding true friends because of my age, that I wouldn’t find those that I could relate to and form genuine friendships with. However, God always puts people in your life who are going to love you and help you be the best you you can be, so don’t give up on finding those peeps!! You are doing what is what is best for you and like you say you shouldn't compare yourself to people i'v done it so many times I look at all the girls I went to school with they have done college, done University, are off married having babies etc. Then there is me age 29! In my second year of college and applying to go to university next year (I'm in England) il be nearly 30 when I start and 33 when I finish and being older makes me more focused and studious knowing what I want to do now, I thought this stuff would never happen for me either. When I got to college at 18, something switched in my brain and my mental health took a downward spiral, socially, I was having the time of my life, but mentally, physically, and academically, I was struggling more than I even thought was possible for me. To make a very long and complicated story short, at 21, I left that college, came home for a year, and am now starting at a new college as a transfer sophomore at 22! I started community college right after high school, and after graduation I took a semester off before going to university for my bachelors degree. Even during my bachelors program I had to take another break but this was a whole year. I just turned 26 & after 8 years since graduating high school I JUST finished my final college class, ever, on Friday. It’s okay to follow your own path & do what you need to do for yourself during the “gap year(s)” 💛

  • @TovaPaul
    @TovaPaul Před 4 lety

    Your story is definitely one of triumph and perseverance and you have every right to be proud of your gap years! You have so much to show for them, and there's no wrong way to do college. I started at 19 and graduated with a chemistry degree at 26 (a whole 7 years!). I worked nearly full time to pay for school as I went, and had a cluster of health and family challenges that set me back some as well. My program even had a woman in her 50s in the same classes as her son! After graduation, the only thing employers care about is whether you graduated lol. Not how long it took you to get there, or how long it took you to finish. And you never know what serendipity might bring - if I had graduated on time with my undergrad class I never would have met my husband! Whatever happens, seeing how you turned a setback into an opportunity shows so much character I'm sure you will be able to handle anything that crosses your path!

    I've been out of college for 10 years now and I completely understand what you were going through. I felt like a failure having to do college for 5 years instead of 4 because of my major and then the change of my minor junior year. I personally wish I had taken a gap year but I would probably have never met my best friend from college or literally any of my friends I made there. If I could go back I probably would do the gap year but you were right, in the south everything is on a specific timeline. I am nowhere near at 33 where 99% of my friends are now but the experiences I have had surpass anything they have experienced and I definitely don't mean that in a mean way either but its just what was on the correct path for me. Whether you're a 21 year old freshman or a 50 year old freshman, you decided whats best for you and do your timeline yourself, not for anyone else. Kudos girl, good luck at Bama!!

    I just found your channel. I want to say I love this! Now, being 33 looking back on going to college straight out of high school I often wish I would have taken time to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I really had no idea what I was doing and being asked to make such a huge decision like that at 18 years old I think is nuts! I’m sure if I would have taken some real time in between my story would be so different. Good for you!! So happy for you!

    I’m so glad you shared your story! Last year was my freshman year at university and I am 23. It was such an adjustment to be 5 years older than my peers and feeling left out because the people I graduated high school with were graduating college when I had just entered. Everything you said rang true, it’s really isn’t about age but rather maturity.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I also took a few gap years for several reasons. I went to college as a 22 year old freshman because I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to study after graduating high school and couldn’t get student loans on my own. I don’t regret spending my gap years getting some work experience under my belt and really enjoyed college once I got to go. I ended up getting married and having 2 kids while getting my degree, but I’m so glad I was able to accomplish everything I wanted to. The experiences you had during your gap years sound amazing. I’m sorry that you felt you were missing out, but I’m so glad you’ve been able to have the college experience you’ve always wanted. I recently stumbled onto your channel and I’ve really enjoyed your videos. You seem like such a kind, down to earth person.

    This makes me feel so much better. I had to take a year for myself because of an illness that kept me out of education and I went to university at the age of 19 while all of my friends were at uni starting 18. They were all ahead in their life. I hated being behind, but when I got to university, I found out that there were actually more older people in my course than there were people of the age of 18. It’s crazy!! You’re smashing ittt💛

    This video is touching in so many ways. I graduated high school in 2015 and decided to go to work full time and take a few classes at my local county college instead of going away to a four year university. I knew I wanted to continuing my education but had I also had to focus on working in order to afford it. It took me three years to finish community college and I was so excited to transfer to a four year college. I chose to commute to school in order to save money but I soon realized how hard it was to come into a school as a transfer/upper class-men, not knowing practically anyone, and feeling so much older then everyone else. This past spring semester I decided to go out for a sorority as a way to meet people and make friends. At first I was nervous because I was so much older then everyone but when I hear stories from other people, like yourself, who did not follow the traditional college plan and is starting their journey in their 20s makes me feel like I am not alone. And it reminds me that everyone's journey has different timelines and routes and that it doesn't make us anything less. Thank you

    This video sticks close to my heart. I took two Gap years before going to medical school. I kept telling myself that I was to old to go to medical school with people who are younger with me and the funny thing is that everyone asumes I’m their age.
    I just feel so left out and behind of everyone of my friends. Everyone is getting married and having babies. But now I’m in my third year of medical school and guess everyone has their own path. Although I would love to go back to college and do more and have more of a college experience!

I felt those same feelings you did of missing out and I was also heartbroken when I found out I wasn’t gonna be able to afford college when I first graduated in 2014... I got accepted into Texas A&M Corpus Christi as a senior in high school but later found out I wasn’t gonna be able to afford it . I literally cried for days and was so depressed girl.. I went down the wrong path and started working as a medical assistant. It wasn’t what I originally wanted to do ever I hate it and I want to follow my dreams again ..

    I wish I would have taken a gap year right after high school. My first year of college I wasn’t in the right mind set to take it seriously. I didn’t get into my first choice university and was apathetic. I wasted so many credits by taking random classes to see if I was interested enough to major in it. I think if you’re unsure about your major going into university it’s best to experience life a bit and gain some perspective before getting into it.

    I relate to you so much. I was the opposite- I graduated high school a year early aka one of the youngest in my class. A couple weeks after I graduate from high school, my Dad is diagnosed with a terminal illness called ALS, so I last minute decide to go to the college closest to home even though it wasn't my dream school. My first week of college, my grandmother passes away. All of the stress of everything ended up with me getting sick and I was diagnosed with 2 brain tumors about a year and a half later. For that reason, my entire college experience, I was struggling and suffering, not able to take a full load of classes and no idea what I would want to do someday. I ended up being unable to go to school in person after my Dad passed because I was so ill, so I transferred to an out of state top level college that offered online bachelor's degrees. I thought being a student at a prestigious college would make me happy, but it didn't- I'm so unhappy. So I decided to just get an associate's degree at the local community college (I am graduating with that degree this semester)!!!! I never took a break to heal from all the pain I went through, so I am taking a gap year now this upcoming school year and then I will be transferring to a college in person to finish a bachelor's degree. I relate to you SO much about being sensitive about your age and where you are in your college journey vs others. Our stories are not told very often- I am from the South too and I see my friends getting married and having children, in grad school etc. and I am so upset at how little I have accomplished even though I am only in my early 20s too. Thank you for sharing your story- I finally feel less alone.

    When you were talking about God, I could totally relate to that! As Muslim, we are told to pray to god for anything we want. But we are also told that sometimes our prayers won't be answered because God has something better planned for us. I have experienced this feeling so many times, I wasn't able to go to the Uni I wanted to but I was able to go through a better route, god helped me so much and he enlightened me so much as well. I learnt not to blame others for my own failures and I learnt to remain strong and think positive and think big. I am so grateful to God for changing my life little by little and hopefully one day my dream to achieve so much will be granted.

    I’m 21 years old and I start college next month to get my bachelors in Human studies and social services to become a therapist/counselor. To be honest when I graduated from high school I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and even though it hurts to know that most of the people I went to school with will be graduating from college this year I feel like I needed those 4 gap years to figure myself out. I try to look at the advantages instead of beating myself up for the wasted time. I started my business in those gap years and actually found a career that aligns with my purpose in life. Some many people out of high school just pick a major and end up doing something completely different with their lives because they didn’t take the time to figure themselves out. Ultimately I can’t beat myself up for what I didn’t know back then vs what I know now, but I’m happy to know that I am not alone in this journey. I’m truly excited! ❤️

I did go to College right away BUT all my friends went to prestigious universities and I was differed from two schools, I ended up losing hope and went to my local community college which took me five years to graduate. My first semester I felt like a failure and really wanted to be with all my friends. BUT looking back it was meant to happen that way. Met my boyfriend freshman year, now husband (8 and half years later), I was able to work full time throughout college, stay next to my family etc.etc. Point being I live in Los Angeles now, worked in the entertainment industry for 4 years and now own my own clothing boutique. EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON.
