It is not an Irukandji Jellyfish, as they are so fragile that they would be killed by the bump against the glass this thing takes. I'm not 100% sure if it is a Chironex fleckeri, as this particular jellyfish was very small. Could have been a baby?
I've been contacted by a marine biologist called Bastian Bentlage who co-wrote a paper on Japanese box jellies and this little guy (the bell is about one inch/3cm wide) is quite probably a specimen of a recently discovered subspecies of Chironex called yamaguchii.

It's amazing how they are so beautiful.
    But so dangerous.

They're pretty and graceful in their movements and appearance, almost in a fantastical way, but you *never* want to get stung by one. Supposedly, if it doesn't kill you you'll beg for death, because it's that painful.

well, i don't like mosquitoes and death adders, either, but they are just here, part of the ecosystem. although i wouldn't wanna touch one. this particular one was very small, only about 3 cm diameter, the strings about 15 cm long. don't think it'd kill ya :)

Possibly the most venomous sea creature. The most venomous land creature is believed to be a beetle from the Melyridae family which is eaten by the Poison Dart Frog. It is thought that the batrachotoxins secreated by the frog comes from this beetle family as high doses of it has been found within it.

it might work, but a change in the pH could result in MORE stinger cells releasing, vinegar is safer i believe. the acid should neutralize them. thats just what i read. maybe pee does work.

@surferfelix There is one species in the gulf of mexico that has killed one person. That was a small child, and I think they were extremely allergic to the sting. For the most part your safe, but none the less the sting is still excruciating. :)

  • @gautsch

jellyfish have no brain. If they do kill, they do so unintentionally. Their stingers are there to kill prey so they can eat (like every other animal, including homo 'sapiens') and defend themselves.

One of the worlds most dangerous jellyfish? Pfft, try the most dangerous and most venomous animal in the world. I'm not exaggerating like most people do here, but getting stung by atleast 10ft of tentacles can kill you in 3 minutes. If you don't touch that much, you still might drown or have a heart attack before you reach safety.
