Sonic Classic Heroes is a hack by Flamewing and ColinC10 (with the contributions of other people), for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.
In this hack you can play as Sonic + Tails + Knuckles through all the levels from Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, from Green Hill Zone to the Death Egg. You can find the release topic here: sonicresearch.org/forums/index...
The Special Stages from both Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 are also available, which means that there are two sets of Chaos Emeralds that can be collected (the ones from Sonic 2 are renamed "Sol Emeralds" in this hack, though). Collecting all 7 of either set (Flamewing added a 7th special stage for Sonic 1) will unlock the Super transformation; collecting all 14 will unlock the Hyper transformation.
If you have two more friends you can control all the characters at the same time. In this video, however, I control only one character at once. This makes the Special Stages from Sonic 2 particularly tricky. There is an option to disable the CPU-controlled characters in those Special Stages, but I chose not to use it to make it more challenging.
This video is a complete playthrough, in which I also collect all the 14 emeralds. It is NOT a speedrun, I am playing just for fun (and not even too well, since for some reason I decided to play on my laptop's keyboard, which heavily affected my performance), so I don't want to see comments where you brag around saying that you can play faster and/or better than me: I know that you can.
Also, I try not to abuse the Super / Hyper transformations to show more "normal" gameplay. In fact, I transform by mistake most of the times, when I try to fly as Tails and I forget I already have 50 rings or more.

That was the best ROM hack I have ever watched.Those hackers had done a fantastic job and they made these old games new and fresh while retaining the original source material of Sonic 1 and 2 while borrowing assets from Sonic 3 in the process and I fully appreciate the hackers for taking such great care of the original source codes that was finalized by SEGA.These hackers deserve recognition.Also nineko's channel thank you for sharing this experience with us and without you I would never know of this game's existence.

Flamewing added big rings at the end of the Sonic 2 stages, too, so you can still collect the Chaos Emeralds throughout all the game.
That Amy in the Tornado part was the most random thing I ever saw.
1:26:05 - Oh my gosh, they get little parachutes now. That's so adorable.
I like how the makers of this hack found a way to explain the two sets of Chaos Emeralds by saying that the Sonic 2 set are the Sol Emeralds, And the way they re-colored them to match the modern-day colors.
The little logo behind the Act number changes per Zone.. nice attention to detail.
Oh, the 7th S2 Special Stage... how I hated that level. I always thought the rings were floating in mid-air because of the perspective.
And I like the transition from the S1 to S2 levels.
Also clever touch in SCZ with the animals getting parachutes; don't remember that being in the original.

Such an idea keeps on being suggested from time to time amongst the hacking community. Nobody ever bothered to do it for real, but it's definitely not impossible.

See, I always make a "test" playthrough to practice before I record the "real" one which gets uploaded on CZcams, so I knew it was going to happen, but I decided to do it anyway, just for fun, to show what happens if you do something that shouldn't be done, like the other death at the end of Wing Fortress Zone.
I love the cutscene between Scrap Brain and Emerald Hill... overall, EXCELLENT hack!

It's not a "Tool-Assisted" Speedrun, but it doesn't mean that I wanted to play too slowly, either. I think I still gave a fair exploration to most of the levels.

Awesome idea you add also Sonic 3 Knuckles in the equation (You put Mecha or Metal Sonic instead of Knuckles of put stick in our wheel) + adding the new Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and I am sold for the best game ever made ^^

I was thinking the same thing, except, also put Wood, Dust Hill, And Genocide city in Sonic 2 section, and I wasn't even thinking of the Metal or Mecha Sonic replacing knuckles pulling tricks and traps in Sonic 3 and knuckles sections.

Also I love how after destroying the Death Egg Robot Tails and Knuckles die in the explosion and Sonic is left all alone to escape dramatically.

The Sol Emeralds appeared in Sonic Rush and the sequel Sonic Rush Adventure. They are Blaze's dimension's counterpart of the Chaos Emeralds.

Actually, I just did a quick search on Google (since I don't have a PlayStation 2 and I'm not familiar with it at all), and it seems that there *is* a Genesis emulator called "PGEN". I can't really tell how good it is, nor how to operate it.

Well, the canonical Super Tails from Sonic 3 & Knuckles (the one with the 4 super flickies) is presented here as Hyper Tails instead, while a new, simpler Super Tails form (without the flickies) has been introduced.
this game is the real superpower of teamwork!
i wonder if they can hack this to have them use the chain ring that pulls them together as in knuckles chaotix so they can remain on screen

I didn't double jump (or I double jumped with Sonic while having a shield). Same as plain Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I noticed a problem with the Sonic 2 special stages, it doesn't take away your rings after doing the stage. That makes it quite a bit easier to get all the emeralds since you don't have to get 50 rings again.

Kinda wish the Sonic 2 special stages used some version of the Sonic Heroes Special Stage 2 music. Just seems like it'd be so perfect.

As cool of a hack this is, it's a shame that it's more for novelty. Sonic Heroes was designed in a way for the player to make use of all three characters in order to complete the game. Sonic one was made for the usual solo run.

This is a odd question to ask and i wouldn't if the special stages were in the style of either Sonic 3D or Sonic 3 but is there a all Sol Emeralds or Debug Mode cheat? since i've never been able to get more than 2 emeralds in both Sonic 1 and 2

No; Flamewing, the author of this hack, extended the walls of Marble Zone all the way to the top, so Knuckles' climbing can't be used.

In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 there were only 6 chaos emeralds. Is that last rotating special stage a hidden and unused feature in Sonic 1 (like S2's "Hidden Palace Zone")? :O
Otherwise, this is an awesome hack. I'm watching the whole thing, and noticing your badass maneuvers through the levels and special stages. Greatness to be seen all around! :)

17 minutes into the video, and I have to say, as a proof of concept, this hack is incredible. But the difficulty level is beyond broken. I would tell Flamewing and Colin that the stages need to undergo complete redesigns to present a challenge to a team with the power to spindash, peelout, fly, glide, AND climb. Also, the bosses need to take 16 hits, as well as have harder-to-dodge attacks.
You can play as team chaotix, but no super and hyper abilities.
Among those with still-functional Genesis and Mega Drive systems.

Okay, the game is kinda cool but with the ability to interchange between characters and the appearance of the sonic 3 shield types, the challenge is completely gone...(for instance, you can just fly thru wing fortress zone and skip everything.) So I think this would be fun to play once but then thats it...
(but I will give credit with the great story linear gameplay, especially with the transition from sonic 1-2)
