  • Now's a great time to plant hardy trees and shrubs. Small trees can add a nice accent to home landscapes. On this edition of Get It Growing, LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dan Gill introduces you to the blue point juniper -- a lovely evergreen tree.

$15 for that size of a juniper! Man things have changed. I just paid $45 for half that size Blue Point from Lowes

Dan, can you tell me where this 'Blue Point' came from? It is not the 'Blue Point' we grow in North Carolina and most eastern US locations I've seen, which is 99% adult, appressed foliage not juvenile or spiny like this stock. I'm a juniper taxonomist and have heard 'Blue Point' means different things in different countries. So this is the first I've seen a second form in the US. If you want to contact me I can send pictures of the other 'Blue Point' we have on record. Thanks in advance for anything you can provide.

You probably already know this, but I watched another video where the spokesman said that "Blue Point" comes from the fact that older leaves toward the base of the plant have a blue/green accent. Younger leaves are lighter green in color. He also mentioned that they prefer slightly acidic soil.

Dan, I will want to shorten my junipers after they grown into a dense hedge. Can I cut the height?

Yes, don’t hack them, go into the top and individually cut the new growth. Repeat every year. (You’re welcome)

I cut mine at the base. Now I'm regretting it.
