    Thank you Mark. I play some pub poker in England, a social thing, but other players mocked my clumsy overhand shuffling last week, and the main mocker mad everyone laugh when I was knocked out by saying ' when you get home (pause).... get on yt and learb how to shuffle'. So, disliking being mocked, and with humility to try to learn, I found your videos, and I can now do a respectable casino shuffle. I also had some help at Thursday's game at another venue from a player who used to be a casino dealer, like you. Best wishes.

      Oh man getting mocked for your shuffle must have been rough, but also it's not like you had ever been trained! Glad I could help smooth it out!!

  • @truepokerdealer
    @truepokerdealer  Před 12 lety +5

    Yeah everyone in the industry fully agrees with that! One problem with home games though is that they are often played on a hard surface instead of on felt with foam padding under it. Without felt and padding, it is very difficult to do a casino shuffle because it is tough to get underneath the cards. I guess that's just food for thought and if you aren't playing with a felt, then maybe you won't be so mad at your friends :)

    I just started dealing, this video truly is a great way to practice the shuffle without exposing. Do this 1000 times and you will be perfect 90% of your shuffles. This is a great explanation of hand positioning as well, really helped me get into my first table with confidence.

      @this-nerd Před 3 lety +2

      @@Maniac-007 Great question. I've been professionally dealing for about 2 weeks now. One thing I've really learned is everyone has a comfortable position. Some people don't even slide their thumbs to the top corner to riffle, and just leave them in the center. Find what suits you, get comfortable holding the cards, as long as you don't show the players or yourself cards you will be set.

    That is kinda how the industry is though. Every single place has their own way of doing things and their own ways of teaching poker. Because of this, I am forced to constantly let people who watch these videos know that they really need to ask the people at the property they work at what they expect and to never come back with the response "I was taught differently." When you get a job at a casino, what they say goes - end of story.

    For instance, the riffle at the casino I was first taught at included a move where the dealer took about 1/3 of the deck off the top and put it on the bottom before every riffle. If you try taking a suited deck and doing the poker shuffle I teach without the wash, you will see what I mean. There is definitely a noticeable pattern in the cards after the poker shuffle.

    No worries. I probably should have been more clear. I am not a double velvet expert, but it will definitely be better than practicing on a wooden table top. The shelf liner is to provide a little bit of padding under the felt to give it some cushion. That way, you can put it on a hard surface and the shelf liner and felt combined will allow you to get under the cards with your fingers when you practice shuffling.

    Riffle, Riffle, Box (AKA strip), Riffle, Cut is what most casino employees would call the most common shuffling procedure. Nothing is 100% in casino procedure across the world. Some places probably teach riffle, box, riffle, riffle. Some places probably teach other similar things as well. Also, many table games shuffle procedures have other small manipulations built into the shuffle along with the riffle, riffle, strip (more commonly called stripping the deck in blackjack), riffle, cut.

    Great video. One observation: one step was omitted. If the halves are not pushed toward each other a quarter of an inch (more or less) just prior to riffling, the corners of the halves, when riffled, will not overlap, and a shuffle will not be achieved. Seems like this is always omitted from instructions, and yet it really is an extremely important step.

    Hi, I recently read through part of your article and spoke again with the dealer I mentioned earlier. He basically echoed what you wrote in your article. He told me that he was taught to shuffle that way (not required by vegas casinos) but I had misunderstood about it being regulated. He stressed that it was important not to pick up the deck during the shuffle but that shuffling with the thumbs high or low on the deck is not regulated. Sorry for the confusion.

    You can use whatever cards you want. Plastic are far more common in poker because they last longer.
    Casinos only use plastic for poker (paper for table games).

  • @truepokerdealer

    Well actually after some thought, i figure it was a tiny little detail simply for the reason, that right handed people (at least me) have a natural tendency to slighty delay letting the cards go (and finishing) with the right half (Hand) causing one of the cards from the left half beeing the bottom card, and a card from the right beeing on the top. So basically, should you put the top half in your right hand, at the end of each riffle the bottom and top cards would remain the same everytime.

    Don't fall into the trap of listening to the poker room(s) where you are playing and thinking that just because you learned it there makes it "correct" or even most common. If you go to a casino just about anywhere and really pay attention, you will notice that as the dealers keep coming and going through your table that most of them shuffle, pitch, cut chips, and run the game anywhere from slightly differently to wildly differently. Just the way it is.
