@@Tarnthewarrior it's been black in every appearance except adaptations and the books drawn by Sliney. It's black in the comics from the last few years like Exodus and the Nick Spencer book too.

I can respect it being Black and red, but I prefer the suit to be a very reflective navy blue, almost to the point of being metallic or chrome.
It's easier on the eyes, distinguishes himself from Miles' current color palette, and it helps draw more parallels between his suit and the classic Heroic Age Spidey
Also because if it's black then he looks nothing like Spider-Man. He's got no webs, no spider logo, a different mask, but him being red and blue help draw the similarities between him and Classic spidey

The way I like to describe Miguel to the uninitiated is that he is Spiderman out of obligation. He would stop being Spiderman, but it's been one really long and bad afternoon, and every time he comes close to stopping, he is drawn back in because he is needed.

Dialogue is reversed, but yeah that was it. Miguel became Spider-Man out of circumstance after things spiraled out of control while Peter did it out of a sense of never letting another Uncle Ben happen when he could stop it.
I prefer 2099 in dark blue honestly. Kind of makes the costume pop when drawing the light reflecting off the suit.

The worst thing to come out of across the spider-verse was people actually thinking Miguel was a vampire. He is literally a spider-man, there's no radiation, he can't just become normal. He's literally 50% spider.
Thanks for the reading guide. I've been meaning to properly read his story after reading exodus a couple of months ago. Ever since shattered dimensions and edge of time he's always been my favourite spider-man tied with otto as superior.
The best explanation I heard was that Miggy got his powers just like Danny Phantom got his.
Big machine -> Accident -> DNA alteration -> 50% human and 50% Spider/Ghost.
The only difference is that Miggy can't turn off his spider half.

To be fair, if all those people know about 2099 came from ATSV, they outright refer to him as a vampire and did absolutely nothing to say otherwise. The movie told the audience “he’s a vampire ninja but a good guy, he has fangs and claws and went to bite Vulture’s neck and no I will NOT elaborate” so it’s no wonder that it’s such a common misconception. The movie really didn’t tell the viewer anything about Miguel. Is he a vampire? They say he is, so we’ll take Gwen’s word for it. What’s that injection for? Don’t know. Why no spider-sense? Beats me. The claws? Probably because he’s a vampire, I guess.
You and I know he isn’t because we know more about the character’s backstory, rather than just what the movie (basically) incorrectly informs it’s audience about.
The movie gave the audience no reason to think he isn’t a vampire, and even goes so far as to outright imply he *is* a vampire. So if you’ve only seen the movies, you’d have no reason to doubt what the movies tell you.
@@finalfroggitapproaches6418 the problem with this is it's a QUIP BY GWEN. She also calls him Blue Panther and Dark Garfield which is enough to tell us her quips aren't reliable evidence. We see Miguel injecting himself with Rapture
Also Miguel's powers aren't radiation based though.
I hope Miguel's current popularity means a return to the Marvel 2099 line in general. It wasn't a perfect line, but it had a lot of great concepts, and I think a reboot would work really well today.

Miguel is such an interesting spin on Spider-Man. He’s like an inverted Peter Parker, but still has that same heroic spirit deep down inside even if he has to dig a little deeper in order to bring it out. He also gives me such great laughs. His sense of humor is different from Peter and the other Spiders, but it still works to give him a more comedic touch while also staying true to his character. It adds a lot of dimension to Miguel by showing a lighter side to him in his own unique way.
Miguel is someone who has seen the horrors of people who have systemized their abuses of power and, seeing firsthand how harmful those kinds of systems can be, starts to open his eyes more to the need for Spider-Man. He’s always had a rebellious nature stemming from his abusive home with his father and later from his relationship with his biological father. He’s always questioned authority and has lamented that those with power are free to do whatever they wanted while everyone else gets squashed. He chooses to be a part of that system purely as a defense mechanism, but he never drops his rebellious streak to the point where Tyler Stone, his birth father, drugs him just to keep Miguel on a leash. Instead of just backing down from Stone, Miguel opts to once again reject what’s been forced on him by using his own ingenuity to cure himself which eventually leads to him getting powers. He becomes Spider-Man out of circumstance, only fighting out of self-preservation. He only continues to be Spider-Man after he sees the impact that he has on the downtrodden, namely his mother. Conchata O’Hara hates the man that her son has become, but loves Spider-Man, a flip on the Aunt May dynamic where she loved Peter, but hated Spider-Man. With his mother’s appreciation for Spider-Man, he finally feels the pride from his mother that he never got and realizes that he always wanted to be important. It’s just that as Miguel he was only ever important to the wrong people, but as Spider-Man he is important to all of the right people. It’s that realization that motivates him to continue being Spider-Man.
Peter David expressly wanted to zig with Miguel where Peter zagged. He’s a different Spider, but still very much Spider-Man. Great example of the notion that anyone can wear the mask.
This! All of this! That's why Miguel is such an awesome character.
Awesome analysis
We really should have gotten an introductory montage detailing Miguel's backstory like we got for previous Spideys, the amount of mischaracterization I'm seeing after the movie is baffling. People even claiming he's some sort of fake Spider-Man or secret villain.
Those "he's Morlun in disguise leading to the Inheritors being the main villains of Beyond the Spiderverse" are getting so goddamn annoying.
Just because of Miguel's fangs and his "vampire-ish face" they're thinking he's Morlun, ugh x'D
High-key agree. The lack of any origin story made so many people take Gwen's vampire comment literally.
At the same time though, I am seeing a lot of people actually delve into Miguel's comics because of this - there's a lot of confusion and misinformation around Miguel after the movie and it has motivated people (myself included) to actually read through his comics to get the full story. I'd never read a full Marvel comic run before but I did after ATSV!
And all of it skipped because Gwen didn't want to hear his backstory 😢😢

Miguel's dry sarcastic quips really made him feel like a Neo-Noir character straight outta Blade Runner and I adored that about him, it really set him apart from the more playfully optimistic Peter.

Even if Spider-verse took liberties with Miguel, Miguel still has more of a jaded, cynical look on the world that clashes with Peter's optimism.
The true heir to the Spider would be someone who upholds Peter's morals and code but is able to be arguably brighter than Peter, something Miguel doesn't 100% succeed at.
I love that Miguel is made the complete opposite of Peter on purpose when it comes to traits and characteristics, but the opposite side of the same coin with their core values. And considering Miguel was the first new Spider-Man after Peter Parker, the fact that his values still have a leg to stand on to this day shows how much of an amazing character he still is

It also looks like the way the blue parts on Peter’s suit looks in older comics.
Personally, I think the color of the suit depends on the art style. Some comics just kinda look better when Miguel’s costume is blue, like in spider-verse or the original run, and the black works better is some of the more modern comics. Kinda like Batman’s outfit
I like to see Nueva York in Spider-Verse as a darker alternate future to Miguel's story. He won, took control of Alchemax and is using its resources to help people and fund the Spider Society, but in the end he got so consumed by his role as Spider-Man that all his relationships suffered, hence why Miguel jumps at the chance to replace a happier version of himself.
I like how unique Miguel's mask is from the rest of the Spidey's, it doesn't have lenses and it has the design of a spider.
Miguel has always been my favorite alternate version of Spider-Man, he’s basically the Batman Beyond version of Spider-Man. I was super excited to see his debut in Across the spiderverse and I’m gonna start picking up his comics again
Edge of Time's CGi cutscenes are still to this day the only time Miguel actually had a black costume outside of the conics.

Quick color discussion; the original comics color almost everything with either just a mid tone and shadow, or a highlight, mid tone, and a shadow. the shadow's are typically just a straight black, so the colors will be defined by their midtones and highlights. For example, Miguel's hair is a reddish-brown with black shadow's, you'd obviously never call his hair black. The midtones and highlights of his suit are shades of blue, to the point where in some panels, his highlight is literally sky blue. It would stand to reason his suit is navy, which would explain the black shadows and blue highlights. I realize they say it's black in the text, but the artist clearly didn't follow that, which was absolutely the right choice, because it provides far more visual dimension and brand recognition, doubly-so post-Miles

Of course Shattered Dimensions put me as a kid on to Spidey 2099 and I fell In love with character ever since,so much so that anytime I read Miguel’s dialogue I hear Dan Gilvezan’s voice.
I’ve always held the head canon that is suit is blue-black in the way that if the scene was dimly lit,it would appear black but if you shined a direct light source onto it then it would appear blue.
I have read the entire 90s 2099 run this winter and Spider-Man is one of the better series that universe had to offer then. I wouldn't say it was great, but certainly good.
Doom 2099 and Ghost Rider 2099 were also surprisingly good. Maybe even better.
Also, blue looks better.

An omnibus of Spider-Man 2099 came out last month. It collects #1-46 along with several of the other contemporary 2099 titles mentioned.
Prayers for Peter David. One of my favorite Spider-Man writers. Spider-Man 2099 just had 2 miniseries and I enjoyed them
For the color of the costume, I like to think that the original day of the dead costume Miguel used was black and red but eventually he would upgrade the suit to an actual superhero suit instead of a random costume which has blue and red. ATSV made me love this character so much more than I already did, Miguel was always cool but wasted potential to me so to see him done well on the big screen brought him new life to me.
I'm actually feeling happy to hear itsjustsomerandomguy. I recognise that Lex Author voice he puts on for Stone. Been a fan of that man since his early days and it's amazing to see you and him collab
Really love when Exiles vol 1 gets some love and recognition!! One of my favorite comic runs ever and I can't recommend it enough. Volume 3 has another really fun lineup, shame it got cut so early.
Peter David has been one of my all time favourite writers. Guy got me into comics as a young child. From the weird, but I love it, Supergirl run of his, minus one or two parts at the end, to his classic run of Young Justice. Everything he ever touched I have loved.
Guy's style is pretty wide, varied.
I like the red and navy blue 2099 because i feel like it just kinda fits what he is. Blue as a primary and red as a secondary, an inverse of the original Spider-Man. He's an entirely different Spider-Man, but not the exact opposite, more like an inversion, still keeping those core themes and values while doing his own thing.
It may be a cop out of sorts but gotta go with what Peter David said. It's Blue Black. Also easily the first Peter David run is the best with manifest destiny being a dope cap off. The art is also the best suited for 2099 Spidey.

Oh those would be way harder to do. Deadpool and Miguel were somewhat easy because they are relativelly new and don't have *that* many comics, but Frank and DD are a whole different story.

I just finished reading his original run and I just loved so much his interactions with his mother and Xina, their personalities collide so well and tbh I did want them to end up together, it was kind of underwelming seeing how everything just ended as abrupt as possible, I'm still hoping some of the og characters show up in the later comics

I picked up issue 1 in a flea market almost a decade ago, still have it to this day his design is so cool.
I just believe Miguel's suit is a really dark navy blue and has patches of a slightly lighter blue that make it so he has that black blue shading.

The original 92 run was one of my favourite comic runs ever. Read it alongside the original TAS run by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko as a kid and became a loyal fan of 2099 ever since
OG Spider-Man is the hero we would probably all aspire to be. Spider-Man 2099 is the hero we all probably would actually be. It's why they're both so great.

So this video finally gave me the motivation to actually pick up peter davids run and I must say it’s been an incredible read. Im about to start the #25 double sized issue and love the book so far. I loved Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel o hara he's really awesome and his suit in my personal opinion was freaking fantastic and badass, heck even as a kid i thought his design was really cool and seeing him being this cyberpunk Spider-Man fighting against these evil corporations is really awesome and badass in my opinion.
It coming from the 90's it's easy to see where the colour confusion comes in. To show the glisten on black rather than use white a lot of artists would use dark blue. Black makes more sense but at this point the dark blue just seems more fitting for a Spider-Man (except for Miles). The recent runs where they kinda rebooted the 2099 universe is really good. Great art and interesting ideas they should expand upon cause with all they showed it's a waste to just leave it like that.

I lean towards his suit being refflective. You remember how Amazing Spiderman toys all had yellow eyes? But in the film the eyes are more dark and like sunglasses, and they only looked yellow in certain scenes where the sky was yellow and it just reflected that. I would go with a similar concept for Miguels suit.
It is black. It's just that the night sky of New York 2099 is lit blue and his suit reflects that. But get him in a less blue envoirnment and his suit starts to look black, albeit still a bit reflective.
Really thankful for this video. I've loved Miguel in all the other media he's part of but never found a proper start in the comics.

On Miguel's costume I think they could have the best of both worlds by making it black normally and having it turn blue whenever he uses his powers or puts it under enough stress. So for example whenever his claws are out the fabric around his hands would turn blue. They could explain this as a side effect of the unstable molecule.
Great video. Always enjoy your stuff Xavil-man. That being said, you really are the only one that gets Random Guy to pop back up in the public eye and as a fellow fan of his and yours, I think that's one of the coolest things ever.

I have two ideas to solve the suit color problem:
1- The suit is black, but it becomes blue when exposed to light
2- The suit could be black with blue circuitry, like in the Shattered Dimensions game
Really does seem like every issue of the original run has a line it that say the suit is black in red, even though like a lot of Batman art it really does look blue
I saw a post on reddit stating that the Miguel in the comics would oppose his counterpart in Across the Spider-Verse
I won't lie, the Spiderverse 2099 suit has been my favorite version so far. The code like design being all over instead of just on the blue or red really solidifys it for me. I could go either way when it comes to the black or blue debate, I've always thought he had a much more unique design compared to any other spider-man alternate.
I wanted to start reading Miguel's stories and I have been reading the recent ones so this video will definitely help

I feel like Miguel's suit is so black, it has a blue tint in the right light. But Neueva York is SO full of bright light that it makes the suit appear blue.
I've seen hair dye that does that so that's how I interpret Miguel's suit.
So glad i was introduced to him in shattered dimensions and edge of time, from then on anytime i see him in stuff like ultimate spider man id go "HEY I KNOW THAT GUY"

I think Spider-Man 2099 is my second favorite alternate Spider-Man
I find it funny there's this running thing in Marvel where they can have an alternate universe that just is trying to do way to much and sucks but they will always have an interesting spiderman. 2099 universe is a mixed bag but it got Miguel (his origin kinda messy as well imo but he's stiil cool), ultimate universe was to say the least strange and was "hardcore" and "sexual" but has the spider iteration that is pulled from as much if not more than Stan Lees orginal view and Miles, Marvel had an anime/manga thing once and the only character I heard from that was Spider-Man (though they did to much with his story) but there's probably a reason why I only heard of him. I'm convinced any average joe can give an intriguing spiderman origin or idea at this point 😅.
When I get paid I'll definitely donate to the legend Peter David. Dude created my favourite spidey, gotta show respect somehow.

Miguel is kinda of a smartass in the comic. And I love him for it.
I’ve seen a lot of CZcamsrs add VA to the comics but something always feels off about it, not bad, just not as good as it feels like it should feel.
Yours came off like a cool movie clip and really sold the scenes for me in a way I haven’t seen elsewhere, good job! I think it’s because you showed off legit cool scenes rather than expository ones which are the ones I usually see VA’d in story vids and stuff.
I actually needed this video lol, tried reading the original 2099 like a year ago and then was missing random parts throughout, then tried reading the 2014 comics which apparently necessitated superior Spider-Man which I just couldn’t enjoy

I love seeing more comic book content, cb movies and games are rad but the occasional comic coverage (that doesn't detail the death of a triple A life long favorite character) is a great sight to see
That is not to say that deconstructions of those downfalls are bad it's just nice to see Xavier talking about something that he's interested in, passionate about or finds joy in
