    China and India do not have any treaty on the water. So, how is abrogating one treaty can lead to consequences between two parties who do not have any treaty in place. And China when it comes to international laws, it hardly play by the rules. So, pls dont relate one event with another. This is mere fear mongering by you.

    • @JohnSmith-vn8dm

      Because regardless of whether or not there is a treaty, Pakistan can cry to China at anytime. If India acts against Pakistan, it will have extreme difficulty criticizing China for doing the same thing at international forums. You are right that China never follows rules and always violates agreements, but the reality is they still have far more international influence than India. So far China has tried to dam the Indian rivers but it has also somewhat restrained. Unless India develops strong relationships with partners, it will have to be very cautious not to antagonize China or give them opportunities to go further.

    Honored by both sides ROFL. Due to its role as a giver and its integrity, India honored even during the war. Pak on the other hand is only a beneficiary. Is there ever a case where a side gets something but says no to it? The expression "both sides honored" doesn't seem appropriate in this context. Now check the situation on Brahamaputra. Does China ever listen to us on the fair sharig of water ? The world just works like this.

    • @JohnSmith-vn8dm
      @JohnSmith-vn8dm Před rokem +2

      China has barely started on the Brahmaputra because China's greatest fear is India might fully enter the US sphere, and the US and India are its long term strategic competitors in the new cold war. However if India is more aggressive on water issues with Pakistan, they will cry to China and China will take advantage of the situation to retaliate with its own extremely aggressive water control. India will have difficulty criticizing this on the international stage if it does something similar to Pakistan. India has to accept that China is its greatest enemy, NOT Pakistan. And India also has to accept that it is at a massive disadvantage vs China in terms of economy and international diplomatic heft. So unless India is willing to strengthen its foreign alliances or wait decades for the power disparity between it and China to shrink, it has to be cautious about how it acts in the region for now. Its important to take a long term view.

The regions between these so called eastern rivers known as Bari and Rechna Doab were divided such that very few canals would cross borders. In this time of 60 years Indian side have interlinked the eastern rivers with meagre waters to flow to pak. Considering the bias it’s high time to revisit the treaty now.
    Another point is that as we can see in the Shekhar Ji s map Beas is already draining into Sutlej well before it crosses over. So effectively we are only in control of the two rivers out of five draining into pak😅.

    One thing that I would have liked this episode to elaborate on is how good/fair the IWT is. The reason for that is that I hear many people say that this treaty is highly unfavourable to India and that like everything else Nehru did, is a complete disaster. You touched on this when you told us that India was allowed to use 40 units while Pak gets to have 208. Sadly, you didn't elaborate as to why was this the case.

  • @yerramillivenkatanarayanam7140

    Sir, Very well explained the issue of river sharing between India and Pakistan of One side of Coin. The other core issue is that Pakistan gained more by this riversharing agreement at the expense of India. India acted big brotherly and gave more concessions to Pakistan by Nehru Govt. But Pakistan is creating hurdles to India and stalling construction of minor irrigation structures by India by approaching World bank.

    • @omnicurious2949

      The 'hierarchy' of escalation is ALREADY in the treaty! India is not opposing 'Court of Arbitration' because of its injunctive powers but because the treaty explicitly says that the 'Court of Arbitration' could be approached AFTER the 'Neutral expert' process is complete. Pakistan jumped steps by abandoning 'Neutral expert' and going to CoA.

    Nehru was over generous in allocating 80% of water to Pakistan in the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 . Maximum water for Pakistan should have been less than 50%/ India should seek a review in her favour of Indus Water Treaty. But for the present India is taking the right steps well within her rights in the Indus Water Treaty i.e. Stopping totally the waters of River Ravi by constructing Shahpur Kandi Dam and dams on Ravi’s tributaries like River Ujhh and River Basantar . Construction of maximum number of hydro electricity dams / navigational facilities on Rivers Chenab , Jhelum and Indus and also utilising fully ,for irrigation-al / drinking water purposes, India’s small share in these rivers.
