@@e-lissanetwork698 I'm gonna start experimenting with digital after Christmas! What he said about oil pastels in this video was kinda hilarious to me as well, considering that's currently my favorite medium😭
1. This video was lovely, always enjoy your videos! 2. The Puppy story time was wild, my mom was listening and was shaking her head in disbelief about it lol. 3. I always look forward to when you and Kooleen post, and that it’s around the same time so I am able to watch both! You guys always have the best videos. Bye!
I think the best feeling as an artist is being so proud of how it turned out that you keep coming back to check it, taking in the serotonin of finally making something good, and being happy every time, like when you were in 3rd grade and kept coming back to check on your new school supplies like every hour lol
oil pastels is actually one of my favorite mediums! Im a traditional artist and I've never found myself to be good when working with colors but oil pastels just really clicked with me so if I'm not using typical pencils then I'm typically working with oil pastels. I love them so much
Yeah, I tried them for a couple drawings and it wasn't that bad, I don't have the patience for backgrounds though. I remember liking dry pastels better.
How we "flip" the picture depends on what medium you work with - a digital piece can be flipped *or* rotated while a traditional piece can only be rotated.
About the puppy lady.... what??? Why?? I will never understand why some people are like that. Thanks for your suffering, Sam. You always makes us laugh (me and my husband). And good luck finding the best puppy for ya! Cheers!
4:01 I agree in art class we did this where we flipped it vertically and the version that I looked at a picture normally looked SOOO MUCH BETTER than the one where I flipped it upside down, so it may work for some people but not all.
I used to hate oil pastels, but I bought some of the better ones and actually love them now. They are really fun for playing and experimenting without getting caught up in details. Great for learning, IMO.
Sam, you really inspire me. I have been learning a ton from your videos. I've also been kind of struggling with drawing lately, but some of your videos made me realize that even artists make mistakes. Thank you for that.
the flip upside down thing is something I did in school when we were learning how to draw well from observation/reference. We were practicing the skill of "draw what you see, not what you think you see". I think it was very helpful in that context, because turning an image into "nonsense" forced me to just look at the actual shapes. From that lesson on I had an easier time drawing from observation and reference. Flipping upside down to view original works from imagination and such isn't necessary though imo. Horizontal flips for such works are ideal, I've especially found them helpful with portraits. (for those wondering how to do that with physical art, I've used mirrors and also taken photos on my phone to flip digitally)
Ik this doesn’t match the vibe or that no one even asked but, your videos seriously have helped me. Not even just artistically but in general. I’m going through really scary times rn yet you always find ways to make me laugh and smile when everything is at its worst. Thank you, Sam
there are so many tips that I know but like I don't KNOW. Sam gave a perfect example of turning those techniques into actual steps and tools. thanks so much!!
I think the biggest problem when it comes to art tips is the fact that they will not always work for everyone. It is important to know that when you are trying out a tip an artist gave you online, it might not work well for you as it did for other artists. When I first started drawing and taking my art professionally, I was told to constantly study, practice, and copy other artists' work so that I can learn. But that didn't work for me at all. Those tips stunted my growth as an artist for a very long time. I hated studying other people's work and I wanted to focus on making my own. During this weird period of my art, I came to the conclusion that I learn best when I'm not studying at all. By that I mean: I learn as I go and learn by observing rather than creating separate studies. So, if a tip isn't working for you, it's okay, we all learn and create art differently. Edit: sorry my sentences sound like microwaved word salad
that first video had so much info I knew already. but put it all into a way that felt like a eureka moment for me. And then that user has another video that covers tension points! I'm so happy I found out about those two tiktoks from this video, thanks sam. :D
The tip about taking a picture on your phone is great, and not just to spot mistakes. I use my phone A LOT while I'm painting (traditional painter), usually when I'm in "this is terrible and I've gone completely off the rails" mode. Looking at it on the phone gives me some distance, which usually makes me realize it's not as bad as I thought. And it also makes the mistakes jump out. So it almost always shifts my mind from "kill it with fire" to "Oh, I'm on the right track, I just need to fix X, Y, or Z."
Hey I've been watching your videos and tips for a while now, and I just wanted to thank you for a lot of your content, It has really helped me grow as an art baby and you're like an online art tutor for me :)
I used to draw grids when drawing traditionally, but only for scaling up my own detailed sketch on a bigger canvas/paper so I would get the general placement right
The hair tutorial is nice because it’s basically blocking in shapes then creating the lineart. Sometimes sketching out the shapes can be hard so it’s nice to block out the big shapes
I love watching your videos! It's always so informative yet entertaining! Really make my day :DD it's my birthday today aswel so after watching this video I feel like it's off to a good start!!
idk what's more cuter, the fact that u wanted to get a puppy or me not noticing the poster u have of ur art hanging on the wall behind u this whole time
I can't stop watching your videos recently. Your voice and the way you gently talk is so calming and relaxing I love it, I like your voice. watching your work is so fun and relaxing also the roasting videos are priceless i wish i could draw just to be roast by you 😄 love your sense of humor, youre keep getting funnier make me laugh all the time. funny and so cool at the same time🥸. And no you are not ugly lol. Keep going star 💪🏻
8:16 as a want to be Gacha youtuber on TikTok, most Gacha tubers focus on the simple shapes of the hair and not have it being to detailed, so that piece would be perfect for a Gacha tuber, and speaking of Gacha tubers it would be awesome if you look at Gacha artwork on TikTok and roast the hell out of it or like it 🤷♀
You could probably flip it and look at it through a window or another light source to see what it looks like. Depends how thick your paper is. Or you could take a picture of it and flip it horizontally on the phone.
Hey Sam! I hope ur doing well Ur new editor is doing great. Can I point out sth though? The edited unsteadiness like in 6:26 feels a little uncomfortable. I love how so comfortable ur vedios are, I watch them multiple times and this small edit thing kinda makes it not like before. I hope you take that in mind :) love your content!
I'm late, so someone may have already said it, but a combo method with the grid is good for beginners. If you start with a sketch without the grid/not minding the grid then make adjustments based on how close or not the object is on the grid to the image you'll get a more natural flow as well as learn how to catch mistakes (such as lengthening or warping). Then you can add detail to the grid areas as needed for the focal point based on how busy that area or square is
Sam, if we flip our traditional art horizontally then we'll just be staring at the back of the canvas💀
That would be very helpful in identifying mistakes you see- /j
Omg lol
there's a reason he calls you traditional artist sad lol ( someone help me come up with a slur for our traditional brethren)

about symetry, literally everyone is naturally asymetrical. this is why it can be quite uncanny to see perfectly symetrical faces.
Yeah! This is why you should never draw faces using mirroring. Just learn to draw the second eye! it’s ok if it’s not perfect!
@@birdeynamnam Why not mirror and then adjust small details so that it's not _too_ symmetrical?
@@SmartyPoohBear still, your character will be looking straight to your soul which is unnatural and an uninteresting pose
