  • New Zealand feeds more than 40 million global consumers each year and yet our cost of food is unreasonably high. In this video, we'll discuss some of the factors that contribute to our high cost of food, including GST, an export oriented economy, labour costs and the cost of land.
    About me:
I'm a Kiwi travelling around New Zealand in my used caravan, making informative videos about the campsites I've visited. The reviews are about DOC campsites, freedom parks, campgrounds and holiday parks.
My vlog is for camping tourists (both international and New Zealanders) who are travelling in caravans, RVs, vans, buses and motorhomes, who want to see the facilities campsites have in advance of staying. I discuss what I liked and disliked about each park, so you know what to expect.

New sub here. Im in NZ too. We grow what we can but there's lots we can't afford to buy and we almost never eat in a restaurant. It's a very expensive country to live in! My children all struggle to pay the bills and raise my grandkids. We can't afford to retire despite running a business for 30 years.😢 The government is absolutely evil. Power corrupts. We are working to be self sufficient. Great research and statistics!❤

Tourists always tell me they can't believe a food producing nation like NZ has the most expensive food they've ever seen. I also believe our high cost of food contributes to our high rates of depression and loneliness. In all cultures around the world, family and friends relax and bond together over meals. When it's too expensive to eat out at restaurants and cafes, a nation ends up with high rates of depression and loneliness, which is a major issue in NZ. My long-term dream is to start an eco-community so people can grow food and eat it together.

Minimum wage went up by 50% under Labour (it was only $15.75 in 2017), businesses had no choice put to pass on this cost to the consumer.

That's right; the minimum wage increase to $23.15 during the Labour government's time in power was dramatic. Growers were forced to increase their prices, which has meant $23.15 an hour after tax only buys us a cabbage, a broccoli, a dozen eggs and that's about it. NZ needs affordable accommodation to control this spiral.

We have been lucky enough to have traveled to Canada, the US and Australia in the last 6 months and we aren’t alone. We were shocked to see how high groceries were in Canada especially.

That's right. I was in Australia last year and their groceries have increased dramatically. Some items are almost as much as in NZ, even with their 0% GST on food. Australians believe Woolworths and Coles are taking excessive profits.
Food in the UK and Germany is very reasonable. In both the UK and Germany, I could make £20 or 20 Euros go a long way at the supermarket.
