Christianity and Energy Healing: Science

  • Many people make science their "god" and if it has research benefits, then it must be ok. But is that true in all cases?
I believe exercise, stretching, meditation, and breath exercises (which impact the vagus nerve, oxygenation, and allowing the diaphragm to descend to help the intestinal system) all are good for stress and relaxation for the body, mind, and soul.
However, I don’t practice Yoga which includes all of those aspects (exercise, stretching, meditation and breath exercises). And yes there is scientific research on the positive benefits of yoga for physical and mental health. But yoga has a spiritual side yoking yourself to Hindu pagan gods, and as I mentioned in another video on yoga, Christian’s are yoked to Christ and that’s why I won’t do yoga even though science says it could be good for me. Science doesn’t measure or consider the spiritual aspects.
Instead of doing yoga postures and practices, I can still use the mind-body scientific benefits of simple exercise, stretching, meditation, and breath exercises without incurring the spiritual risks of yoga.
Some people are gifted by God with the ability to sing, dance, and excel at sports, but while I’m inept in those areas, I was gifted with the ability to sense electromagnetic energetic fields generated by living creatures … horses, dogs, and people gravitate to me for stress and pain relief therapy.
I don’t know if Reiki utilizes the science of physics and electromagnetism but refers to it as “life force energy” or if there is a spiritual power at work but I do know research shows the positive benefits of Reiki even on plants.
According to reiki.org the word "Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy.”"
The founder of this energy healing technique was not a Christian and I’m unsure if “Rei” is referring to God as we know Him as Christians or if they are referring to a pagan god. I have heard Reiki, at the higher levels, includes working with a familiar spirit and I'm concerned how that can open a potential door to demonic deception.
Just by Reiki’s very name (Rei - god’s wisdom or the higher power) we can see there is a spiritual component layered on to the physical energetic and intentional aspects of the Reiki healing. How do we know if that spiritual layer is from God or from a deceptive spirit of power? So while science shows the energetic side of Reiki has healing impacts, I’ve also heard exorcists warn people of the dark side they've encountered. I have experienced Reiki sessions in the past when I was familiar with the science part, however now that I’m aware of the spiritual side of Reiki, I won’t be using it anymore.
Instead of Reiki, I can still use the mind-body scientific benefits of energy techniques that do not layer on a spiritual “Rei-god” side.
Some energy healing techniques I’ve discerned are both scientifically based and spiritually neutral are infrared light therapies and acupressure tapping or EFT. My other Christianity and Energy Healing videos describe more on the inherent neutrality of things like incense, essential oils, sound vibrations, stones, and crystals even though those items can be used in spiritual rituals (in both Christian churches for God and in New Age/Witchcraft for the occult).
It’s important to discern science when we are looking at various energy healing techniques. We do want science to be able to explain how energy works and we do want research to show consistent benefits from energy healing. But we also have to understand the limitations of science on the spiritual aspects of various healing modalities. Science cannot measure the supernatural, it measures the natural. Science has its place, but it does not tell us if we are at risk of stepping into a spiritual quagmire, opening potential doors to the occult or demonic oppression.
God created all energy and His creation is good. As Christians we have to do our homework and look for the science AND for any possible pagan spiritual background of the energy healing that we are looking to benefit from.
On a final note, we also don’t want to blindly accept all scientific research studies. Some science can be bad science if there are things like:
    - flawed designs
    - researcher bias
    - manipulation of statistics
And some good science can be judged as bad for example because:
    1) research leads to an economical conclusion of a treatment that threatens big money makers (follow the money)
    2) it goes in a new direction against the status quo (how long does it take for new ideas to become the status quo)
Be cautious about making science a "god" ... be open to critiques on any scientific research presented and be aware there could be false critiques. We need to discern both the science side of energy healing and any potential spiritual side that may be layered onto the energetic side.
