Château de Vitré is a powerful fortified castle located at the western end of the fortified town of Vitré, in Ille-et-Vilaine, on the steps of Brittany.
The Château de Vitré occupies the end of a spur of shale overlooking the Vilaine valley to the north and a marshy stream to the south, which disappeared in the 18th century to make way for the royal road from Paris to Rennes.
First wooden castle was abandoned in favor of a new stone castle built by the baron of Vitré Robert I of Vitré at the end of the 11th century on a new defensive site, a vast rocky promontory of schistenote which dominates the Vilaine by about thirty meters. There still remains of this building a Romanesque style porch.
