I think we're overlooking an important factor of the Badass bridge; it's MUCH more maintainable than most stock bridges, especially the traditional Fender bridges (whose saddles are pretty sloppy, harder to maintain re: action, intonation, etc). The sonic difference between the 2 bridges would be VERY hard to pick out in an actual mix. To me, the improved maintainability itself is worth the price of admission. Any sound benefit - even if it's a placebo effect, is a bonus by-product

Yeah, before the whole Pre Amp craze, the Badass brought the old Basses to the modern sonic world with presence and sustain..
Thanks for posting this clip! To me, as a bassist who has discerning ears and have used both extensively, sometimes on/off the same bass within a day undecidedly, your video proves what I have always felt to ring true: The original bridge has "a thing" that is nice and organic, for sure... but (though it may be more subtle to some) there is no doubt when the Badass is installed, EVERY note is accounted for, and SPEAKS clearly. You get the fullness and separation which is vital on bass. When notes smoosh over and get lost in a mix, the bass suffers, sadly. The high mass bridge acts as a sort of natural compression to liven things up and keep things powerfully even at the same time, dynamically; no loss of energy expounded. I think the Badass IS a move forward and in the right direction. An evolutionary design that really helped the bass get over better in the 80's and beyond. No denying it's powerful impact and fantastic working design. No contest for me, the Badass wins!!! I love a great "vintage bass" and all, but this sounds arguably better, for sure. Just my 25+ years of professional playing experience/wisdom thrown in!

José Chávez, Thanks Michael for this video, I have a 1977 Rickenbacker 4001 used, and when I buy for $150 25 years ago, I put a BADASS II with Thomastik strings JB344 flat wounds and I was perfect to play my classic jazz!
Sometimes, a little oiece of hardware can make a remarkable difference in feel and sound! Have much fun with your beautiful instrument!
One things for certain, you kill it with either bridge, bro!! 🎸🏆👏🏼 Thanks for the way you did the comparison. I went back and listened several times. To me the biggest difference is the sustain of BAII (as advertised). However, the tonal variation surprised me. And you’re right, it’s to taste! The high mass seems to darken or deepen the tone (mid punch) to my ear.... kinda like a luxury car insulates against road noise and just feels solid. If had to choose, I actually think I prefer the stock bridge, though, which I would not have predicted. The super nice thing.... you just turned a vintage classic into a dual threat 🤘🏼

Awesome vid! I installed one on my P J Bass and noticed the tone change (for the better) in the lows and mids. I like the look better too - remember bridges were covered originally, so looks weren't a priority!

The differences in sound a very slight with maybe a slightly brighter sound with the new bridge but what really stands out is your excellent playing. The biggest factor in any sound is the player and how they play. I can only dream of playing at your level.

The badass bridge sounds slightly brighter and does seem to have more sustain. I like it man! Keep that original bridge though, you never know when it'll come in handy

I purchased a brand new J Bass, still awaiting arrival, and started contemplating changing to Badass already, cuz that’s what every one does….but now hearing your A/B of both ….and I kept switching to just the playing sections and closed my eyes while listening…..the original sounds darker to me and I like it…think I’m going to play with original on for now…thank you!

Yeah man... love this upgrade for the fender jazz. Huge difference in tone. So much warmer, and fuller with the BA II in my opinion. Of course, it's all subjective... no right or wrong choice, but I'm definitely a fan of the BA II over the original fender bridge.

Wow! Major difference. Major major difference! More snap and growl with conviction! I have this bridge on my Marcus Miller Bass. Yes the newer models don't come with the Leo Quan like they used to. It's a shame that he doesn't make these type of bridges anymore from what I heard. I hope I'm wrong. But if so if you have one you better keep it. Thank you for the video. Truly appreciate it. So i just got a Fender Modern Player Jazz with double humbuckers and i noticed the highs aren't really clear, it comes with what looks to be a Fender high mass bridge with brass saddles and if i am not mistaken brass softens the sound up, i did buy a used Bad A bridge that was off a Washburn bass but it is almost identical to the the Bad A. I was thinking of trying it out on my jazz instead of the p bass I bought it for after seeing your video because I like the tone your bass got with the Bad A, thanks for the video 👍.

Way more punch! Depending on what one wants! I have multiple basses and wouldn’t want all of the to sound the same! Badass on some, stock for the others!

Yes the player makes a difference..but he put new Roto Sound Stainless Round Wounds on the bass..when he changed to the Badasss, it got noticeably brighter and punchier...but had he changed, not only the bridge to the LQBA but instead of the Rotos (which bassists from his and my era swore by 😂) used a different brand of Round wound string we ALL would've heard a HUGE difference in the tone. LaBella Super Steps (the have an exposed core going over the bridge saddles ) bring out EVERY DROP of the TRUE tonal characteristics of any electric bass. I've been playing bass for 50 years this year.....I've using LaBella Super Steps (Stainless Steel) for about 10 years now...and the tonal versatility on bass (in my opinion) has yet to be approached...let alone surpassed by any other brand..and I have used them ALL...😎👍 But you're not wrong..."The Player" is critical as well.🤜🤛

When I bought my first Jazz bass (back in the 70's), the first thing I did [upon recommendation from a guitar tech/friend] was to install a Badass ll. Every bass I've owned since then has been "BadAssed".

this is my too cents. The original sounds more close to the wood. It gives and authentic/organic sound. The badass has more of and studio synthetic(in a good way), more seperation between the sound of the strings.
I still prefere the original actually

Try the chrome plate Brass Badass II, it gets you that with more sustain, ive been playing bass for 55 years, some
times P-Basses and Jazz basses notes fade too quickly, thats why it was created in the first place, Thousands
of bassists since the early 70s cant be wrong
The Badass brings more tone and difference to the Bass and a little more compression. Good for setting the Bass in a Mix (live or Studio).
I have put a highmass bridge (Gotho) on a '82 -JV-Squire-Jazzbass for over 20 years and i have never become an idea to put the old bridge back on this Bass.... ;)

Hi Michael, just listened to this to check out what you did.. changing bridges is really a question of the Bass itself, in this case, i like the original Bridge better,.i had a similar experience when i changed the Bridge of my Sadowsky from Schaller to Badass, put the Schaller back on , but my Jazz bass blossomed out after replacing the Bridge with the Baddass, the same one that was on the Sadowsky before.. so..But thanks for the great review, and keep rocking , my friend!!!

I think, the original bridge is a little throatier, however, the difference is a rather small one. Somehow, I like the feel of the Badass bridge on this particular bass. And with it, the string saddles don´t drift apart, which is a nice side effect.
Maybe, I´ll put back on the original bridge again anytime soon, just to hear and feel the original state of this beautiful bass again! Either way, I love this instrument! ;-)

Hey, is it true that Leo Quan passed away? is that why Badass´es are so rare?
raoul walton I don’t know if he passed away, but these bridges aren’t produced anymore as far as I know, so used ones (on eBay, etc.) already reach remarkable prices!
It's interesting to note that Fender bass players Verdine White, Jaco Pastorius, Neil Jason, James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, JOe Osborn, Peter Cetera, Donald Dunn, Gordon Edwards, Ron Baker, Jerry Jemmott, Chuck Rainey, Jim Fielder, etc. all played their instruments with the stock Fender bass bridge. Marcus Miller and Geddy Lee both played their Fenders w/Badass II bridges installed. Jeff Berlin's heavily modified Precision had a Badass I bridge.
I simply love the feel with the Badass. Sound wise, the difference isn't huge, but noticeable. But probably not in a band context.
It just brings out the tone more and sounds little brighter

I took my Badass off my 73 JB and i think it actually sounds better with the original. The Baddass bridges are very good though. My bass has an ash body so its bright anyway!
I also string mine with Rotosounds!! They bring out the beast!!

I have a Baddass II on my Jazz bass that I like just fine, but for my P bass I am looking at a Babicz Full Contact bridge. Seems like a better engineered design and eliminates sharp height adjustment screws from sticking out.

Both sounds great to me, it would just depend on the music you play to.
No complaint at all with the stock one, which produces the perfect, probably the best, JB sound on your nice vintage JB. It's also very nice with the BA bridge, the bass might be sounding a lil bit like Precision in a good way, which could be a nice option IMO.
Still the vintage JB itself has great tone (and your touch is perfect as well), how much your the guitar weighs?

I put a Leo Quann bridge on a really cheap copy of a P-bass waay back when. I loved that Memphis p-bass! Wish I'd never sold it.

I play in a trippy psych rock outfit and I'm asked to mimic a synth bass often, with whole notes ringing long.
Luckily, the bass I inherited as a teenager had a badass II conversion. I'm not sure I'd be able to get a long-ringing full tone without it.

Yes, these high mass bridges help with long synth tones. I use an Akai SB-1 and the upgraded bridge is almost required to get the best from the pedal.

As soon as you sweat, the Badass height adjustment screws lock up. Different metal for the screws than the bridge. Add sweat, instant cement.

a bit of reverb added on second recording with BAB?
On both "slap" clips, there is a bit of reverb (Source Audio Dimension Reverb pedal).
The difference sounds like a slight gain boost and some compression. I'd love to see someone compare the wavelengths to see what effect the bridge actually has on string vibration

I have two fender bass, got them used, one with the original bridge , and one with the badass bass bridge , i can’t get low action on the badass bridge the saddles are all the way down and truss rod adjusted , one the other bass I can have the action very low (2mm)
Thx a lot for watching and commenting. You're right. In some cases, the Badass bridge is too massive to get the strings low enough. In my case though (set up of the bass and the fact that I prefer higher action), I haven't had any problems with setting it up.

What if your original bridge has 3 mounting holes and the replacement Badass II bridge has 5 mounting holes?
911Driver On my bass, it just fitted perfectly. I wouldn’t drill additional wholes into the body of my instrument, to be honest. :-)

Nice video Michael what kinda strings you use Flat wounds ? I have a 70's reissue Fender that looks and feels like the original I just replaced the pickups with the Gen4 Noiseless Fender's waiting to get the BadAss bridge hopefully I'll get exactly what I'm hearing as far as the intonation
On the J, I use rounds (usually D´Addarion ProSteels, but Rotosound in this clip)
On my P-Basses, I use old Thomastik Jazz Flats (almost 6 years old) and D´Addario Chromes (3 years old).
Setting up the intonation (with the help of a good tuner) isn´t a big deal at all!
He just installed Rotowounds swing 66
i wish you did the test without changing the strings. if i have to choose based on your /2part/ experiment, the original bridge sounds a lot more authentic and funky. This video has me reconsidering my jazz bass bridge modification.

The original bridge has more grit and grind and more punch, the BAII smooths out the rough edges but takes away from the grit and grinds but does add more of a sustain. On a bass likes this, I prefer the original bridge.

I bought a 2009 Fender Highway 1 P bass new in 2009 and it came with a Bad Ass II bridge. I still have that bass and it still sounds awesome, especially with flatwounds. I mostly play punk and rock and I do not slap bass (sorry Davie504).

Michael- you mention cutting the A string longer. Is this just for Fender style basses or something you recommend for every bass? Maybe just one extra winding? I have a Warwick Rockbass I just changed the strings on and something just doesn't sound right anymore so I'm wondering if only having one winding on the A could be a factor
Hi there! You need to do that to prevent a rattling of the A-string, due to a missing string tree on the headstock on the Fender basses. If your bass has some kind of string tree, or even a angled headstock, you normally don´t need to that!
did you file string grooves in the BAD ASS bridge?
I've bought it used, and the riders were already filed, or rather had grooves from the strings.

Badass have more definition, the original bridge have more fashion sound. A beauty Jazz Bass. It sounds good evah

Hatte eine BA auf meinem 57'(bj90) Preci.und eine auf meinem 2003er..
Hab aber auf orginal zurückgebaut,weil orginal is eben orginal😉und so soll der Bass auch klingen.Abgesehn davon,kann man beim51er nicht mehr den Aschendeckel montieren,und beim 2003er muss man zusätzliche löcher bohren bzw kann mann die Stringthroug nicht mehr nützen😦..(beim 2003 bis heute2019,schafft mann es übrigens nicht das Stringspacing zw.allen vier saiten gleich einzustellen,weil die reiter k...e sind🤣egal org.is org!!!...übringens klingt dein Bass so gut weil du's in den Fingern hast👍👍👍👌..and thats it!!!!...lg
Danke für´s Gucken und Kommentieren! Du hast natürlich recht, der klangliche Unterschied ist marginal. Aber das "Gefühl beim Spielen" ist ein anderes. Bei der normalen Brücke driften die Saitenreiter schon mal auseinander, wenn ich fest anschlage (was oft vorkommt). Und das passiert bei der BAII nicht. Für mich ist es eine Vrbesserung, und somit ist die Brücke auch immer noch auf dem Bass- ;-)

How much the badass costs?
Kukuh Prayuda It’s not available new anymore. But you can still find them on the second hand market quite regularly. Something around $100 is a usual price.
eBay has the Badass II for around $90
They also have copycat company brands and the Badass III (For Jazz pickups). The Badass III goes for around $70.

stock bridge is OKAY, but Leo Quan is best present in low mids, which is the most important frequency for a bass guitar in a band set. period

Old bridge - better tone, new bridge more power and sustain. I did similar change (Hipshot Kickass) and I am not happy with result. I prefer tone of vintage bridge more.

Wasted money, but the consumers' society needs this.
Well, for me, it was not a waste of money, but it all depends. Sometimes, especially when playing live, I dig in quite hard, which cuases the string saddles to drift apart. That can´t happen with the Badass bridge. So that alone, is a stron point for me. I also like the "feel" of the bass with the Badass mounted. So, for me this mod is worth the money I´ve spent on. Cool opinion. But I've A/B'd IN THE RECORDING STUDIO and there is a tremendous difference. Not to mention sound engineers swear by the bridge upgrade. So for your garage band, you're right. Save those coins for more Coors Light cases.

Ich habe die BAII Brücke immer noch drauf, denn auch wenn die Soundunterschiede garnicht mal sooo gross sind, ist das Gefühl beim Spielen definitiv besser. Durch die Konstruktion der Brücke driften die Saitenreiter nämlich nicht mehr auseinander, was mir bei der original Brücke aufgrund meiner oftmals heftigen Anschlagshand öfter mal passiert. Und dies verändert dann die Saitenabstände und somit auch den Sound. Deshalb empfinde ich die Leo Quann Brücke als für mich sinnvolles Upgrade! :-)

Sophos Utm I used the same fresh set of strings with both bridges. And the Badass wasn’t new when I installed it. I got it used for a decent price. They aren’t produced anymore, and used ones can reach pretty high prices... Thx for watching and commenting!
I think the over compressed audio track is masking the attack. I would imagine the bass feels more alive in the player’s hands. If I had that lovely old bass I would keep it original. Of course Geddy would disagree.

The Badass bridge doesn't look straight to me with the E string being very close to the edge of the body. But more importantly the original Fender bridge sounds 10 times better with more highs.
Fendersunburst It looks less "dramatic" in reality. And I agree with you, the sound is different, but which is better might be a question of personal taste. Right now, I really enjoy the Badass bridge, as it makes the sound a bit "tighter". Especially when played with a plec. Thanks a lot for commenting, stay safe!

Geddys jazz bass was the same year model as this (except with a maple board instead of rosewood) had a badass ii, and he ran rotosound 66s. So I'm not too surprised.
To my ears badass sounds better.. but in some videos, original sound better...I don't know...

Baddass has more hard and solid sound. Classic bridge has more vintage, more woody sound. For me looks better Gotoh GEB201B CR. This Gotoh is hi-mass, but still has vintage look and sound is very similar to Baddass, maybe even better. Look at: czcams.com/video/hnjIYv7MPD0/video.html&hd=1

If you want your whole notes to sustain for the length of a half note, go with the stock bridge.

Difficult judgement : with the badass this bass sounds more objectively balanced ...yet I have the impression the harmonic content is a bit more "polite". Which to me is not the point of a good tone... a bit like putting a Honda muffler on a Harley Davidson
For me personally, it's alactually more about the feel while playing. And I like the Badass so much in that respect, that it's still on my bass today.
Years ago, I owned a '78 jazz and decided to replace the stock bridge with a badass II, thinking that it might improve the sound. Other than making an already heavy bass heavier, it made NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER to the bass. This is marketing 101, pure and simple: A problem was invented, bass players were convinced the problem was real - and then sold the cure: " Your fender bass lacks sustain - dont worry, we have a product that'll fix it ! ". No...

I tried to listen with an open mind, but I agree with Metz Ztem; it sounded better with the original bridge. As the owner of at least 20 Fender basses over the years, and builder of many more Fender style basses, I've almost universally found that hi-mass bridges tend to obscure the natural wood sound of the bass while providing only minimally more sustain. Some F basses are better than others, and if your bass doesn't naturally have a warm full sound, a hi-mass bridge won't help it much. Funk players like these bridges because they do bring out the highs a little, but at the sacrifice of some warmth in the low mids. Modern funk players often prefer to scoop out the middle while emphasizing the the highs and ultra lows, so this bridge may help a little with that. Please note that Larry Graham himself doesn't use a hi-mass bridge. Check out 32:33 in this CZcams video: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Estival Jazz Lugano 2011. Assuming you have a decent bass and strings, the sound is in your hands.
