I don't know if they could do an anthology book like this today with modern books. Comic books are so serialized, one story could be hundreds of pages. And the crossover stuff would just be confusing. How the industry has changed.
I've come to appreciate Jim Aparo's art much more in the last few years. Alex Toth was quite an amazing artist, there's so much in his panels yet he used relatively few lines. The Deadshot story is drawn by one of the great Batman art teams, Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin. Great overview of the stories Michael; everyone has their own personal checklist of favourites.
Batman 156 - Robin Dies at Dawn - behind a great cover, is most defo one of the best Batman stories & made a huge impact on the 6 year old me. Even to this day, when I drive at night, I see the lights of oncoming cars that look like the eyes of one of the creatures in this book. As always, Comic Book Wednesday is a highlight of the week so many thanks for your hard work in producing them.
Aparo was a favorite Batman artist for me as well. His Batman was the first I was introduced to when I first started getting into hero comics, primarily with the Brave and the Bold title.
ROBIN had his own series in Star Spangled Conics his main villain was the Clock. And first meet up was on Radio like first Jimmy OLSEN started on Radio.
Jim Aparo, Marshall Rogers and Norm Breyfogle are my favorite Batman artists. Neal Adams gets an honorable mention of course, since their style is so heavily inspired by his.
Jim Aparo is my Batman artist followed closely by Norm Breyfogle. Sheldon Moldoff was so much better doing his own style on comics like the Golden Age Hawkman than having to ghost Bob Kanes primitive "art".
To Me the Best of the stories were done was done by Bill Finger and Dick SPRANG travelling time in History. Or the great escape like the Giant Penny or Dinosaur Island.
The 50's Batmobile has always been my favorite, perhaps because it was the very first Batmobile I remember....I really enjoy the 40's stories, but Neal Adams and Marshall Rogers, Frank Miller and Michael Golden.....and all the Steve Englehart Detective stories.....A real greatest stories would run into three omnibus'! Thanks Michael!
I gave up writing 32 years ago because I sucked at it. I picked it up as a retirement hobby. I’m posting snippets of a storyboarded screenplay on my schreckpmc channel. It’s amateur, but it’s my baby and I love all my babies.
I received both books for Christmas the year they were published. They were part of the Batman 89 hype machine. I treasure my copy of the Batman edition. However, I wasn’t feeling the joker book. I just saw it in my basement last week, and it’s pretty beat up.
Anything called The Greatest whatever is going to be controversial. I've read a lot of those stories on DC Universe Infinite. I enjoyed a lot but can say there are other good stories that could have been included frankly.
I used to have this book, I also had The Greatest Batman Stories by Hamlyn, almost identical contents apart from a couple of stories unique to each collection. I think that story at the end where Batman marries Catwoman is meant to be the Earth 2 golden age Batman. The fun version of Calender Man dressing up depending on the holiday is my favourite version, I wasnt a fan of the Long Halloween version with the bald tattooed head, too edgy for me. Not the greatest stories but certainly some fun stories. Bet they don't include hanging giants from the Batplane in the 85th Anniversary collection.

I always loved Jim Aparo as well. Very under appreciated. He was doing Batman up through the Knightfall story with Bane. Nice long run.

Batman stories need more giant stuff in them again.
I always enjoyed blue Batman with white eyes.
I believe Marshall Roger's did the pencils on the Deadshot story. Terry Austin on inks.

Du du du du! I've got that one and other earlier reprint books like it. Always good to scan through the history of these characters.

Marshall Rogers was also fantastic on Batman.

If they were throwing in stories just because of the art, I wish they had included a Michael Golden story. He was awesome on Batman.

Perhaps Frank Miller's version of Batman (Dark Knight Returns) was historically accurate ? 🤔🤔

Stop it! In spite of the poor marketing decision, you're making me itch to go and grab some Batman stuff to read!
