I came looking for this comment.
shutoff valve on the gas line will stop the overflow into the engine when sitting. I would also add stiffer or taller shocks on the Rear, have a Bad Carolina Squat on that bug.

Only nice thing about the back being low and soft, is that it will drift better but I do agree they need to be stiffer lol this thing is sitting super low in the resr

Snowmobiles have a lot more rolling resistance. They burn fuel like crazy. Having a direct to ground drivetrain drastically improves efficiency, so the 4.5 gallons of fuel will probably get you the same range as the 10+ gallons of the original tank.
The snowmobiles definitely have more friction in the drivetrain and being on wheels will certainly help but you also have to remember that 2 stroke engines are also not near as fuel efficient as a 4 stroke engine. I think he will be cutting it very close on any longer trail rides or especially a day in the sand.
If I remember which sled he had gotten the engine from it would be easier to figure out how much gas he would burn through. I know my older 2 stroke from 1978 would get about 15mpg. His being from the 90s should get at least that maybe 20mpg in sled form. With him not being at full throttle on trails, he might be able to go one route without having to refuel. But I still wouldn't want to risk it without knowing for sure. Can't have too big of a gas tank.
When it took Soo much effort to get it started don't just kill it after idling for 5 seconds! Dude! Open carbs up , get it warm, tune carbs, do as much work as it needs while it's running cause you want it to continue starting to be reliable so don't be in such a hurry to shut it off when it was a miracle you got it started. This advice is for every engine, every type, every configuration, rule of thumb bro. 👍🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻

Chris, add a fuel shut off valve to prevent the flooding of the engine.
I did this to all the rider mowers I worked on for my friends repair company.

You’re gonna play hell getting that thing to wheelie with the rear being that soft. You need MUCH stiffer spring in the rear, to the point it doesn’t squat even when you’re in the seat. Front needs less ride height (you need some extension so it can transfer weight) but it looks good as is honestly. Just remember you want all your travel in the front and you’ll want rebound loose and compression on the tighter side. You need weight transfer to wheelie easy, you think having the rear squatted already would make it better but it’s worse. A CVT can do it easily but it’s hard on belts so you might wanna pack a spare.
Really, independent suspension, especially a trailing arm/semi-trailing arm design, is some of the worst possible geometry for lifting the front wheels. IMO it won't happen with STA unless he replaces the shocks with solid strut bars. That aside, if he wants not only something that can more easily wheelie (with the right 4-link geometry, at least) but a better handling suspension in general, I recommend a De-Dion axle with a Satchell Link. He'll be travel-limited on compression, though, since it's rear engine and all kinds of things will be in the way, but that shouldn't be too big of an issue, TBH.
I love all mini builds but this one is just amazing. Your work just gets better with time. Heck yeah.
Snowmobiles go a long way on 10 gallons, and those tracks consume quite a bit of extra fuel to rotate. The good thing about roto packs like that is you will know exactly when to turn around 😉

Man, Thanks to Caleb for that idea. I didn't even think to check the crank case for flooding. For the lights, those motors put out AC from the magneto, so in addition to the voltage regulator, you need something called a full bridge rectifier, matched with a high value Capacitor to get the voltage to 12 VDC. I actually did this to my own build on a snowmobile engine like yours to power my fan and lights and it works perfect. I'm thinking that in addition to being AC, you voltage regulator is bad.

These (on snowmobiles) normally have a little hand pump that connects to small fuel lines... It looks like a choke handle.. You pump it a few times and it squirts fuel into the carbs. You should look those up and order one. They work great.
I'd like to use my Call a Friend Regis ... lol ... always good to have someone with a lil more knowledge available We never saw the 3 days of frustration but could certainly hear it in your voice and how you were just about done. Really happy things worked out, it is a very cool project.
Round yellow lights would be cool on the front when ou get the voltage figured out. Love this build man, great work!

You say that the look is importantly to you so I think that you blowing up the led headlights is fortuitous. You can now replace them with ROUND mini headlights just like the original bug would have had😀

Bro, take the headlights from electric bikes. They can withstand up to 80 volts and some even more. Standard LED headlights are 12 volts, they are afraid of even small power surges.

You've outgrown the shed shop. It's time to start looking for a real shop, my man. Also, snowmobiles are designed for long distance travel on national, and state trail systems many hundreds of miles long in some cases. That's why the tanks are so large. Born and raised Michigander here. Snowmobiles are everywhere, in my state. As a kid, my parents had Rupp 440, and 340 Nitro's. I first rode a sled at about 2 years of age, in front of my dad, and mom, both, on both sleds. A few years later, I learned to ride alone, on both sleds, and rode most winters on both, until I was about 17 yrs old. the 340 wasn't much slower than the 440. Both were quick, for their time.

As a midwesterner who snowmobiles a lot I was basically screaming IT’S FLOODED! At least you got it running again lol
Carburetor: the main reason to have a fuel shutoff on the tank and always shut it off at night. Theres 2 types of needles and seats in them, one designed for a pump and one designed for gravity fed fuel. Make sure you have the correct needle and seat in there so it doesnt happen all the time.
This is the coolest toy ever. The only thing that I would change is I’d put round headlights on it to keep with true bug fashion 🤷🏻 You sir have built a masterpiece. Would it be possible to make long fuel tanks where the running boards are? Down both sides would keep the weight down lower and with that capacity you could probably do an endurance race. Yet again I am amazed at what you have created!!!
Either raise the rear end or lower the front end it looks ridiculous with the front end up high like that
Lower the front end slightly and get a hell of a lot stiffer shocks on the rear end.
Capacitive Discharge Ignition CDI, is electronic ignition. meaning there are no points. whenever an engine is flooded, you will want to
have the choke off and the throttle wide open. because the engine needs all the air it can get.
pod filters could be a solution to the air box situation. UNI FILTER makes good pod filters with pre cleaners. I have one on my quad and it's better than the stock air box.

I think once you get a paint job on it and everything, it will look fine with the spare gas tanks. I personally think it would look bad ass painted in a military color scheme. Some olive green, and black. Would help make the tanks look like a natural part of the build too. But it's been great watching this mini bug come to life! Great work!

19:54 - the reason the primary "slams closed" is because A: there's no load on it, and B: it's not a constant mesh drive... like those made by Team/etc., with a centrifugal or manual clutch to provide the take-up.
Perfectly normal. Just be aware of how much more load you're putting on that drive. It's fine for its intended application (snowmobile)... but more weight, PLUS more traction puts a LOT more dynamic load on that belt. I would keep several on-hand... and if that conical drive has serviceable plates, I'd order a few of those too.

Haven't made it through the whole video so I'm not sure if it's being covered or not, but I would suggest rubber isolation mounts for that CDI box direct mounting it and vibration can be a real killer sometimes for those older cdis

2 stroke engines need to be “cleared out” by obnoxious Revs until it goes wot without bogging. Watch a motorcross race from the late 90’s early 2k’s and listen to them rev the engine to the moon for 2 or 3 minutes straight to get to operating temperature and clean the engine out of unburnt 2 stroke oil and clear the carb and power reeds out. Give it time to warm up to operating temp and a few revs before trying to go wide open throttle, that’s why it was running better the more you ran it. Awesome build man you fkn rock🤘🏼

I’m sure you know this already , but I think you really need longer shocks and probably should move the mounting points on the rear arms closer to the wheels .. I think the leverage on those springs being at the pivot point is off the charts …..

Need to refill that floor jack with oil since it keeps slowly lowering like that. Also, I LOVE how 3-cyl 2-strokes sound. As for the airbox, yeah, at least double the size of the box, itself, then give it either bigger twin tubes (and bigger filters on them) or triple intake tubes on the box wrapped around the back rail.
What would be cool is if you could plumb the roto-pax into the main fuel tank. I know it can be done by having 2 of the 3 tanks sealed. So the pax on the left side is vented with a fitting on the bottom that would then it feeds the vent on the right side pax, then the right side would then feed the vent on the fuel tank in the dash. I found that set up on the old Honda trail 90 if you wanted more range on them. This has to be my favorite build to date, great job.
Probably it is because the stator puts out ac voltage. That's why they were flickering. Even if it's has a regulator, it still doesn't have an ac-dc rectifier

The portion of the video that begins at 8:07 (more or less) immediately reminded me of the scene toward the end of a rather good 1965 movie called "The Flight of the Phoenix" where the stranded group finally managed to get the engine on their cobbled together aircraft running. The movie stars James Stewart, Richard Attenborough and Peter Finch. (I highly recommend that movie, by the way, and I'm sure it must be available for streaming somewhere or other.)
The bug came out sweet! I do think it needs longer shocks in the back. Or something too raise it a bit
Nice. Here’s an idea. Turn the brush scrubbers into gas tanks. U can easily get 6 gallons per side. And will give u another 3-4” of heights to get into vehicle. U can add a vacuum pump to get fuel to carb or electric pump.
You should store that tyre smoke if you like it so much. You could take small inhales in bed when going to sleep.

Dude...what an awesome build....and love the squat. I don't care what anyone says it kinda adds to the buggy look. Yeah, it could be lifted a bit, but leave the squat some at least, if your suspension is good enough. Looks amazing though...sooo badass!!

spray the inside of the fiberglass with rubberized bedliner too. it'll help with vibrations and strength. PPL do it a lot on flares and bedsides to protect those.

It's not epoxy you wanna use on electrical mate! Its called "Potting Compound" it's used on circuit boards and does the job of waterproofing as it's non conductive. It's what we use on eBike controllers to keep them sealed and water tight! 👌🏻
The 90s early 2000s polaris 2 stroke atvs are the same way. If the bottom end gets fuel in it, won’t start till it’s drained. Now you got the last spare CDI!

Take the pull start cord out cut open the end of housing for a starter moter or leave cord in run a pulley system into the cockpit
