I didn't realize that the camera was out of focus for most of the video until I had to start the next segment (because of the recording time limit). The second segment (both are combined into one video) is much better video-quality wise.
thank you very much!
this brings back some nostalgic memories of mine
cause this was my first own synthesizer.
it was the first affordable synth and i payed 999 german deutschmark (about 500$) for
the sound of the 90s!!!
thanks again!
You're welcome! I found it a few years ago in a pawn shop where I used to live. They figured it was some sort of "old '70s organ thing" so they sold it to me for $57. I used it for three years live as a midi controller for my main keyboard, and it was very useful. It's now retired from gigging duty. Thank you! :-)
The keybed is actually quite nice. It's very smooth and quick. The plastic ends of the keys that overhang can be a bit brittle in some cases (mine had several small pieces that were missing) - just the underside piece that hangs down. It is a little "spongy" when you play hard however. There's one catch with these older Yamaha keyboards - if you use it as a midi controller, you will discover that it doesn't send the full range of 0-127 midi values. It maxes out at 100, so 0-100. That means it's not a great midi controller if you need the full range of dynamics. If you use the built-in sounds, it's great. If you're using it to control organ sounds or things that don't need much for dynamics, it's great too. I used mine in conjunction with a Yamaha Motif XF8 as a midi controller for several years - as long as I kept the dynamic limitation in mind, it was good.
I've played a lot of lower-end keybeds on newer keyboards; this is better than most of them, but it has the dynamic limitation I mentioned. You can get around that by using a midi processor to convert the values, but that's another piece of equipment to set up. But if you like it as-is, it's a nice little keyboard that can sometimes be found for pretty cheap (mine was around $60). Hope that helps.
Great video. Very underrated synth. Basically a DX11 with a sequencer. Can do MORE than people realize. Great for Electro pop/funk.
Agreed. Thank you for watching!
This is a great video! Most grateful. Thank you.
Thanks!
Hey man!! Thanks for the video. I got one of these for $20 with the cord cut off... I’ve got my fingers crossed it’s gonna work. Taking it to a specialist synth repaired for a once over. This video has me giddy with excitement!!
It’s super sweet and nice sounding.. but can be pushed into a fairly harsh edge. And plenty of usable volume filling bass.
Thanks! Congrats on the new board. I've actually used mine for pads and electric pianos in a band as a supplementary board. Make sure your specialist checks the battery - otherwise the memory can be messed up if it's dead or low (and that memory keeps things like transposition, tuning, etc, not just user patches). Had to replace mine with a CR-2020.
Oh, also, I've not had much time to work with it, but there is a program called "YSEditor" that is an editing program for Atari ST. If you have a Mac or PC, download Hatari, get that running, and then you can run the editor for the YS200 right on your computer. You'll need a midi interface etc if you don't have one already. Took me forever to get the midi output working with my Mac; if you have any issues let me know and I can try and explain what I did. Anyways, the editor greatly expands the possibilities of this keyboard. They "crippled" the front panel with what Yamaha called "Easy Edit", which works for limited programming, but hides most of the parameters. You can access those through the editor.
No 52. One of my favorite songs in high school. Interesting rendition. Eye of the tiger.
Just doodling around with that chord progression. I like that song too. Not supposed to be any sort of "rendition" at this point though. :-D
I just bought like this keyboard worrth $70 and it is working well .Can you suggest how can we program and record while playing on the instrument . We need to hear another sounds for YS200 but it is only through to the ys200 card .where we can buy that one.Thank you for your wonderful demo. It is great.
Hi! You have the Easy Edit buttons that give you access to a number of editing parameters, and patches can be saved to the user bank or to a card like this reverb.com/item/36383747-yamaha-mcd32-ram-card. I don't know what is available these days for patch data cards with other sounds honestly - you might just need to watch eBay and Reverb. These boards weren't super popular in the first place in most areas, so there might not be a lot of surviving patch cards.
There *is* an editor program, YSEDITOR, for the Atari ST that works with the free Hatari emulator software. home.kpn.nl/m.tarenskeen/yseditor.htm
It's kind of messy to set up the midi connection in the software, but it can be done.
Actually, I just looked on eBay - there are a few cards available right now. They will cost more than you paid for the keyboard though. www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Voice-Card-RCD103-EUROPEAN-EDITION-YS100-YS200-B200/313330147583?epid=26042957879&hash=item48f3eea0ff:g:tfoAAOSw3L9fyn1W, www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-VOICE-CARD-RCD3000-TETSUYA-KOMURO-Vol-3-EOS-YS100-YS200-B200-w-case/133572410185?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111314%26meid%3D92984f3c5a5d4b62897cb8695aa6f6d8%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D313330147583%26itm%3D133572410185%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithDarwoV3BBEV2b%26brand%3DYamaha&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851. It looks like what you want to do is look for Yamaha YCD cards for sound libraries, and MCD cards for patch storage.
I still have mine and I love it. The sound can NOT be emulated. It's perfect for New Age and some of the patches would be great for Synthwave.
That’s neat. I think a lot of the “sound” is due to the early digital effects. And the variety of other waveforms besides the simple sines of earlier DX models. Have you messed around with the Atari editor?
Can do anything once you master the programming. My friend did covers of BILLIE JEAN, CROCKETTS THEME and RHYTHM IS A DANCER on this. That had people stunned. Some didnt believe they were done using only the YS200 and an Alesis MMT--8 sequencer the drum and bass sounds were STUNNING. When he comes back from New Zealand in January. I'm gonna see if I can get him to upload them on here. Let's just say once people hear these demos. It will be a GAMECHANGER for this synth. And prices will start RISING on the second hand market.
Seriously underrated are not even the words.
I would love to hear those.
@@MaxThompsonMusic
I will speak to him early next year. See if he will agree to upload them.
@@fender1000100 I just repaired a key on mine, and was thinking of selling it till i realized the potential of it
Great job !
Thank you!
6:25 Thanks you brought me back to reality.
Thanks so much.
No. 17 SoftEns is truly soft. Modern synths time for lessons. Please sit down and take notes, the lecture has begun. 9:24 you are the sunbeam in my eyes where have you been, o' where have you been all my life?
No 48 TubeBell. Nice. Had to relisten to that a few times. Too nice. Was that for real?
It's got that sound for sure. Not real tubular bells, but it's its own sound and I love it. I should make a version of Carol of the Bells with it. :-D
Max, what preset patches and Tone- Wave/Input4NOS # should I try? It's so hard to single out certain ones because there are so many and they all sound good, but what do you like? This is just for fun! I love this synth btw. It's easy to program unlike the TX81Z which blew my mind (a long time ago) trying to intuit/understand it.
I don't really have any specific settings that I like. It's all trial and error for me. I do tend to prefer any Input4NOS under 5000. Above that it starts sounding a bit brittle. But that's me. I do find that the Stereo Echo and Distort. Echo can do a lot for a sound in moderation (or over the top can be fun too :-)). Starting patches? I like to start with the brasses, organs, and light synth ones (not pads but not the leads either). If you find some magic secret, I'd love to know. :-) I tried using the YSEditor program on an Atari simulator for editing but could not get the midi routing inside the emulator to work. That program though is supposed to make the keyboard way more powerful.
Also experiment with the bass sounds...transpose them up an octave or two, change EG and FX etc.
Yes, I had the same idea/realization. That the best sounds are not the pads but the ones you would not normally think about, like brasses, organs, horn, trumpet, etc. It has a uniqueness to the sound that is refreshing and honesty that I don't find anywhere else. Hard to describe but it does beautiful without getting lost down the FM programming rabbit hole, that I got lost in with the TX81z which is more powerful but made me think that FM doesnt sound good and is always crashing-like. The YS200 made me realize that wow I can actually make nice sounds, maybe not the most impressive but beautiful and simple in their own way / right that you won't or don't heard anywhere else. And it can sound really warm which is surprising for such a simple synth, like a home keyboard.
Agree. In one video on my channel (the "Yours" remix contest submission), I have three YS200 presets being played. Two pads (FluteVoice and Fog) and a more rhythmic comping sound (Swirlies). They fit in the background nicely even if they aren't the most impressive alone. czcams.com/video/QwyQAoUAQtQ/video.html
@@MaxThompsonMusic Ex-actly!!! It sounds fantastic, superb when layered with another synth, the YS200 to provide the high end beautiful sound. It does sound extremely beautiful in a simple way.
NO 52. Are you serious? That sounds good on a keyboard?
No 72: Whoa are you playing a real trombone or a fake one?
That's (in my opinion) the most realistic sound on the entire keyboard. I wish I had a breath controller to use with it. That would be fun.
@@MaxThompsonMusic I turned to that one (#72) and the first thing I starting playing is the Ants Go Marching One by One Hurrah Hurrah :)
I have the TQ5 with is the desktop sound module of that keyboard... I have lots of custom sounds I made for it.. One is "KlausVoice"
Very cool. Interesting looks they went for on that too. :-D You should make a demo. Thanks for watching!
Good
Thank you.
43 is an excellent sound!!!!!
44 as a bass
20 is great
Brass and percussive/plucked like koto (54) and marimba (55) are awesome
62 up high sounds like “the streets” sounds
73 is super lush horns, BoC styles
Did you register user tones ?
Hello,
No, I am not using any user tones. The user memory on my unit does not work. I'm working on replacing the internal battery which will hopefully fix that. Thanks for watching!
Hello ... I occupy sound No. 68 SolidLead of that Yamaha keyboard and s200 will you have that Sample ??
I do not have a sample of it I'm afraid. Do you mean that you have the YS200 but it doesn't have that sound?
@@MaxThompsonMusic No ... what I occupy is that sound in Sample ... for me to use it through a computer
@@MaxThompsonMusic Could you pass me that sound in Sample ... ???
Ah, I understand now! Unfortunately, I won’t have access to my YS200 for a few months as I’m in college. I’ve never sampled anything for a computer before so I’m probably not the best person to ask for samples - what format would you need?
Hello Jorge, I have an YS200 hooked up, and would be happy to sample the sound for you.
Hi. Accordion ? What minute ? I can't see all
Hi,
There is no accordion preset on the YS200 I'm afraid, though I'm sure someone could attempt to program one. Perhaps I am misunderstanding?
@Teclado Descomplicado | Andre Klawa
N97: Not done yet! SNES StarFox!! Get it? Ok, I'm done now.
Wasn't familiar with that game. Had to look it up. Now I get it. :-D
Checked the comments page, and it said I had 20 comments to go through. 15 of which are yours. Wow; glad you liked it so much! :-D
No. 45 Nice harpsicord
It's not bad considering the tech used.
Does it have regular piano voice
Only the two piano sounds shown in this video, Piano 1 and Piano 2. Neither sounds anything close to a real acoustic piano - this is FM synthesis and acoustic piano replication is not its strong suit.

No. 25 eez like a pillow
No.39 sounds like a circus organ. You caught on quick.
Sounds almost like the organs used on some of Frankie Yankovic's old polka albums too.
No 62. Oh no not M(blah) Jackson!!! 25:21 in the right language with the wrong voice.
No 73: Keep playing low, lo...
No 69 snazzy. Musical. No 70 could sound way good way up in the high notes.
I like #69 too. Fun to doodle around with. Sadly No. 70 does not sound that great up in the highs at all. Turns to mush.
No 74 Nice like #73. Sighing off. *sigh*!
No. 37 sounds like a church organ.
They did a good job with the limited sound generation. You should hear that sound with some nice hall reverb added.
