The two upper ones are:
1. The order currently assigned to the squadmates.("F"ollow or "D"isperse)
2. The "game mode" you're playing on: 1 2 3 for skill levels, 4 for randomized, 5 for multiplayer
Lower boxes:
3. Threat meter. Red > Yelow > Green (Green is no monsters remaining on the floor)

I played the demo before release. Loved the demo. The demo gave you the best level in the game with the flamethrower. Sold me. I played it once upon release (paid $54.95 at Electronics Boutique in Minot, ND). Did not finish. Was disappoint that the demo was more fun. The real game gives you 10 sewer levels. Bored me to tears. Found my 486 in the other room a couple years ago, and wondered if it would still boot up. It did. What game do think I tested it with? Yep this one. Me: "Oh, yeah. 10 sewer levels to start. Nope nope nope."

From a programmer perspective
there are no excuses. an ammo counter is literally printing out an integer value, and was already in the wolfenstein engine. I can only assume they somehow broke it and nobody saved previous versions.
Put the slime on the layer behind the map. also just slowly fade them out or if rushing it out is important, just drop them completely. I can only assume they made the splatters a permanent entity like corpses in Wolfenstein, except directly on the player. Why? I don't know.
The death sequence makes me think they broke soooooooo many things trying to make what they "added" work.
Ok but seriously, that fucking ammo counter irritates me almost as much as it did you, the player. The ammo is stored, numerically, in the memory. Its like asking your friend for a bowl of icecream and he brings you the bowl full of ice cream but no spoon. You know he used a spoon to scoop out the ice cream, but he won't give you any spoons.
The fire sprites were sufficient for indicating fire. Adding the flashing is making more work for themselves. in this lazy game thats an odd decision.

You'd love the ammo counter in Corridor 7. It's WAY more broken.
I may have given them too much credit, but when I was a kid I interpreted the ammo bar thing as a purposeful design that was more "realistic and tactical" as it was supposed to represent the weight of the ammo you had. The thought was that you don't actually know, down to the very bullet count, how much ammunition you have in a situation like that. The whole "this game is realistic and hardcore!" was a big part of the game's draw at the time, sewer rats and slime monsters aside.
I'm with you right there, but how in blue hell do you break an ammo counter? I mean even if it's in hexadecimal, you just need to convert it to an integer value and display it, ffs you can do that on a console it's not that hard!

The name "Body Count" is actually not the name of the game. It's just a reference to the players that suffered trough playing this game.
But the Galil is the best rifle it has a bottle opener built into it

The bottle opener is a nice feature, but what I'm particularly fond of is the up-turned charging-handle and the improved sights.

I agree that there's a beauty to the old-fashioned Galil which the new one lacks.
Every rifle has a bottle opener, it's called a "sling mount". The M16 and M4 have a particularly nice one at the rear, since it's flat.

in 1994 , i was still using a 286 with 2mb of ram, so i didn't have a lot of option and DOOM needs a 386 with 4mb of ram, so i found this, and like u mentioned, the sprites are copies of doom and that really made me happy, i loved blowing the walls and setting fires, i did enjoy this crap, because my pc was crap, so one person's trash is another person's treasure, in the sea of cartoon like fps games, this stood out as looking at least realistic with uzis and mp5 and shotguns, so i loved it, still love it today, it has memories.

It's weird because in the demo a lot of this stuff was actually fixed. You can shoot through doors, the exits aren't boobytrapped and the map is a lot more useable because it only shows living enemies. Also, you get a melee weapon instead of the overpowered infinite ammo shotgun. The full version feels like an earlier, crappier build.
Depressingly I recall at least one modern game doing that, releasing an old build instead of the finished/less unfinished one they intended.

When remake of the whole game into mode by one man is better then the game itself talks not about awesomeness of this man, but about level of fuck up that the game and studio were. It's kinda sad, really

I’ll be honest, to a military equipment enthusiast like myself, that cover art is strange and confusing. See, the vehicle is quite obviously an M270 MLRS (the large grates over the windshields give it away), which is a long-range rocket artillery carrier. I cannot think of any reason why troops would be advancing into battle alongside this thing with all guns blazing, since the job of the M270 is to set up about 20 miles away and lob 12 rockets in a minute. It does have that roof-mounted machine gun, but with all the explosives it carries if it’s close enough to anything to use that gun it would be reversing as fast as it can go. Clearly the artists looked at one picture of the vehicle in its traveling configuration and assumed it was some kind of APC.

I got this game on some kind of "500 Games on One Disc!" thing I picked up at a computer festival in the 90s. I think it was supposed to be a shareware game like almost everything else on the disk, but they may have even messed that up because I'm pretty sure it was the full 40-level version.
This game is definitely not good, and some of the design choices are questionable at best, but for the time it was made it was far from the worst shooter. I actually had a decent time playing with my friends (not multiplayer, of course -- I'm pretty sure that did not actually exist, despite what your box says). It was one of the only games at the time that had anything resembling a "tactical" feel. Keep in mind I'm using this in the loosest sense possible, but standards were very low back then. You could shoot and kill enemies nearly instantly, and similarly be killed very quickly by bullets yourself. The game really DID have "ambush AI," although it was rudimentary, enemies would hear you and react and lay down ambushes instead of constantly running to be killed one after another. Sometimes.
I think your version may also have had some bugs that mine did not. The slime / blood staying on the screen and firing through doors were not a problem when I played it. Also using explosions to blow away parts of the level was a very cool feature that pretty much no other game had at the time. You could effectively use it to steamroll through a level to the exit if you had the ammunition.
As for the four boxes, I don't remember what all of them were, but I'm pretty sure one of them changed colors depending on how "alerted" the terrorists were to your presence on that floor. That was something you could affect with the circuit breaker.
I remember those "500 games on one disk" thing, 90% of the games on them were utter garbage from tiny companies that had never made a game before and that one thing they made for the disk killed them, the other 10% were either ok or good.

I love that textures on the floors and ceilings is listed as a feature. You know they were scraping for selling points on this one.
That was actually a notable graphic feature at the time and part of what made their version of the Wolf engine 'enhanced.' we had solid floors and black skyboxes in every game two years prior. But it does remind me of a low reach. Like listing menus or controls as a feature.

This is one of those cash grabber games from the 90s. Back then there were no internet reviews like we have today, back then all you could go be was how cool the cover art looked and how the in-game pictures looks and storyline on the back sounded.

Yeah these days it's a "Make Floor & Ceiling Ugly" key but at one time it was a performance option ijs. Even that 2D gradient option was an enhancement over the solid color Wolf3D used. The floor and ceiling texture was singular but that was the first step this and ROTT took, intermediate step before the full tilemap ShadowCaster used and the eventual free form Doom allowed. With a game this bad the only thing worth talking about is the floor & ceiling heh.

and I really do mean, true pain and suffering. this game is a total masterpiece by side-by-side comparison. everything this game does bad, Radiaki does worse by tenfold. you won't walk away unscathed, mentally or otherwise.

I was going to recommend he play this game as well. Only notable thing about it is the weird humor. Being known as the only one with the balls and the bat to do it line still sticks with me to this day for some reason. The game was garbage though.

Because the internet deserves it I guess. Would have helped you find a clean screen button. Have no use for it beyond contributing to the collective knowledge of the internet, so maybe I'll send it to LGR or Ross of Accursed Farms. Spread the misery for you.

I haven't played it since.
I don't remember that one in particular being THAT bad. You must've gotten lost. Not saying the game is amazing, but it's way better than any of their previous games.

1. Less cheats, way harder game
2. Half the amount of levels, WH1 had around 35, the 2nd having about 17
3. Some of the monsters I liked more in the first game, namely the goblins over the gremlin things.
4. Some of the earlier levels seem better designed, but not as big as the first one.
I like both of them and put them higher on my list of old fps games, but I can understand how people can judge it today. Both games are pretty good :)
Witchaven took a slice of the gameworld that up to this way was not quite beat. Something like a mix between Stonekeep and modded Hexen, yet with much more in-depth approach to combat, magic and action-centered dungeon crawling (as opposed to RPG-based style).
No game since then had succeeded in replicating the style, even though many have tried, - hell, they even try to this very day, only with more needless features... Necrovision's combo fighting semi-melee was the only one to do things that worked and felt better, but it's not quite in the same thematic neighborhood. Witchaven has its due victory in my book.
@@HexenStar It's really awesome to hear someone else who see's this game in a similar view. I won't argue that Witchaven is an amazing game. It has it's flaws, but still succeeds in many other ways that no other FPS (especially at the time) did that well. It's great to see support for a game that wasn't quite as mainstream as blood or duke 3d with GDX.

Speechless. Many CZcamsr's do bad games, but they also tend to be bad games that are enjoyable enough to watch. Some of this stuff you do, especially these early 3D shooters, are hideous to watch even in short bursts. They aren't fun for anyone. These are the worst games.

I had the demo to this game YEARS ago when I was a very young kid. I thought it was amazing back then because you could shoot glass and burn down things in the office complex with a flamethrower. It blew my mind back then

This is like the video game equivalent of those cheap *G.I. Joe knock-off toys* you find in EuroSaver, Poundland or dollar stores. The kind that come straight from China, bad English on the packaging and have oversized weapons that don't fit in the figures' hands.
That game was fun for me when I was a kid. I liked destructible environment and power outages.
Red/yellow/green mark out of 4 little boxes depicts the level of completion RED means you have to kill more enemies to proceed to next level YELLOW means you can proceed to next level but there are more enemies to be killed (If you are running for high score).
Interestingly in my wersion "celling fans" shoot bullets out of a gun with animation that goes together fine with the sound.

Game Type - The difficulty setting. Settings are as follows:
1 - The easiest setting
2 - The normal/average setting
3 - The hard setting
R - The random setting is kinda like a hybird of the three previous settings.
If you can beat the game in this mode, you should consider joining your local
police department's SWAT team....
N - Network Play. Your standard Deathmatch
T - Same as above, but with teams.
M - Modem.

It wasn't one of my favorite games, but I did enjoy playing it. The "R" random difficulty did provide enough variety to play it through a few times.
For all these years since nineties, I think I remember this game was named "Rats" lol
there is a game literally called RATS.EXE for Windows 3.1 and of course it's much better than this (it comes with SEX.WAV)
