    Starting the day not far from Kaikoura the coastal ride north to Seddon was the perfect start to the day. Expectations and anticipation ran high. The 182 kilometres down the Awatere Valley through Molesworth Station to Hanmer Springs has developed an almost mythical status. For the intrepid traveller or adventure rider the journey is high on the bucket list. Travelling south with the Inland Kaikoura Range to the east as a constant companion and a vista every corner turned will take your breath away.

    Restoration of those two Cob buildings is such a credit to those involved. The bunkroom of the old homestead cottage was stacked to the ceiling with rolls of wire. The kitchen area, during the season, we camped in and cooked on the open fire . We also camped regularly in the accomodation house. First season the wood stove in the kitchen was still in working order, in later times we just used the bedroom with the open fireplace.

    I loved riding the Molesworth when I did a South Island circuit a couple of years ago. I didn't know what to expect. Google Maps said it'd take 11 hours!!! (It only takes 4). That must have been because so many people spend the night there. Next time I do it I'll take more time time and enjoy it, and not think I had 11 hours of riding in front of me.
    BTW - Jolly's is a lot of fun on old worn 80/20 tires. ;)

      Hi BV, welcome and thanks for watching. Yes I'm beginning to think that way. I reckon to have all the destinations listed one wants to see. But if some side road worth exploring says you won't reach the chosen destination..... there's tomorrow. Yes I went down the Jolly route and man it was quite challenging fully loaded with tent and all. Cheers.

      Russell lupins were introduced in the Mackenzie Basin in the 1940s from sowings or ‘garden escapees’. Although beautiful, they modify the ecosystems of braided rivers. Wading birds such as the wrybill require shallow braids to feed in. The lupins stabilise river gravels, forcing the river to form deep, rapid channels unsuitable for birds. Deep stands of lupins also shade and displace native plants, such as the woodrush. This is the lower Hooker River valley. (From the Encyclopedia of NZ)

    • @petercreagh8797
      @petercreagh8797 Před 2 lety

      I think you would want a bike with full knobbly tires on for safety but it would be doable on a road bike if you were not worried about dropping it. All the gravel downhill bits would be a bit scary on road bike tyres.

      Easy peasy Mothership. The Bonnie would fly through and Jacks Pass is just another corner so no big deal really. I'm amazed at my ignorance not having done it years ago

      @@MothershipVideos I used to ride all my bikes over to Taihape when it was gravel most of the way before adventure bikes came along. There's no hurry when enjoying the Molesworth run. Full knobbly tyres is over kill. I run a Continental TKC 80 on the front which is considered a 50 /50 all rounder and gives awesome mileage and works well on gravel. On tar its predictable and really hangs on. On the rear I use a Mitas EO7, again a 50/50 with excellent on road performance and capable on all the thousands of gravel I have travelled. I tried an Anika Wild which is much more aggressive being good for rocks and mud and very good for gravel but don't last as long. I'm fitting another Anika Wild onto the rear again this week in preparation for another South Island trip in March.

      @@kiwiadventurer Give the Motoz Rallz a try on the rear, Just swapped from Anakee wilds which are good but made of butter , Did the Rainbow road with the Rallz and very happy with them, looks like they will last a lot longer, bit noisy on the tar though, but sure footed on the gravel and asphalt.

    Quick question for you mate. How long did it take you to get from the start of the road to the campsite roughly? Doing the track later this year and trying to work out if it makes sense to stay at Acheron or push on for Lake Tennyson. Thanks in advance!

    • @kiwiadventurer
      @kiwiadventurer  Před rokem

      I know its 44kms from Acheron down to Hanmer cbd then to Lake Tennyson on the Rainbow. A couple of hours would be pretty cruisy at a guess for that part. From Dashwood on the Blenheim end at the start, its 162km to Acheron camp which is very pleasant. I can't remember times Richard because I stop and film more than most. Hope this helps. The roads are good and lots of cyclist do it too and any bike is good enough on roads even. Cheers .. Darryl
      When you say the start of the road I assume me mean from Dashwood on the north en
