- In November 2000, brake failure resulted with Postal from Bristol Parkway to Temple Meads running into rear of coal train, which carries on towards BTM .So 67002 rides up onto rear wagons, then rides along until it hits the road bridge, with subsequent brake in coal train consist. Driver not seriously injured, only a broken arm; very lucky !!
Thanks to friends in Bristol for the tip off, giving me time to drive from Cardiff before closure of the site. Look out for extended version soon
The amount of weight resting on that one coal wagon is incredible. I'm surprised it didn't buckle...
It's only recently I've taught myself how to download my old tapes ( I have over 900 hrs ) onto YT...........Glad you enjoyed my camera work Mike in Wales
I love how the train is called “Special Delivery” it must’ve been a special one when it crashed.
I was thinking to comment the exact same thing and then seen you beat me to it 🤣🤣
@@shitchef4853 same XD
Thanks for your comments; always good to know you're watching my hobby ( railways, not accidents !)
So the Class 67 was pulling the mail train then collided with the coal train?
Can't believe something that heavy can leap over two hha hoppers
@@suffolktrainsplanesandbuses It was being pushed down the track by the Post Vans, whose brakes hadn't been connected at Parkway
OK thanks
How much can one & a 1/2 hopper take? EWS answers; "one class 67"....
Good to hear no one was badly hurt.
I was at Newport Docks a few weeks later when 2 more cabs were delivered with the next batch of locos. it's quite amazing that the loco " jumped up " onto the last wagon considering their profile and also the fact the loco didn't fall onto the platform. Have you seen my vid. of the derailment at Cardiff ?
Mike
Many thanks for that detail. I was in such a rush to get trackside at the station. I'd driven across from Cardiff and they were just closing the area,,,,,,,,,,so just made it.
Thanks again
Mike in Wales
Amazing shots, Mike. Thanks for uploading. Great piece of video.
I'm pleased you enjoy my hobby too. I'm in my 71st year and still enjoy the railways in the uk..more to come in 2015
Mike in South Wales
gives a new meaning to the term coal hopper. It's good to see stuff like this uploaded, a service to all.
Another amazing upload from your vast collection Mike, The driver of that 67 was a lucky man......Looking forward to the next one....Bob
Thanks for the additional information Jack. Now up to 151,000 viewers
It was a quick drive from west of Cardiff to catch this on video
Thanks for the info. It's the 1st time in 12yrs I've had any confirmation as to what happened
Mike W
I can remember when this happened all those years ago!
The sound of the horn being continously sounded, but there was a brief pause of silence and then a huge bang as it either hit the wagons or the bridge!
I was on a night shift at the time so I was trying to get some sleep and it was only when I was watching the local news that I realised what had happened.
Great video👍
The driver was very lucky not to be seriously injured. The train had not had it's brakes connected to the loco I beleive
+Mike Wilcock Pretty sure he bailed out at high speed and broke both his legs and similarly severe injuries. Platform to the face at 60mph
limeyfox not wat I heard he jumped from the cab after it hit the bridge only suffered a broken arm
Now back in service and running well
Mike in S/Wales enjoying my 70th year
its amazing how the train has just climed onto the top of the hoppers and not really de-railed itself.
The coupling snapped and the 67 carried on, on the back of the coal train until it was stopped by the road bridge.....so I was told. I'm only an enthusiast with a video camera. I don't work for the railway companies; but do have good contacts. Thanks for watching.............Mike in Wales
The driver was a very lucky man and I'm glad to here 67 002 was repaired, I'll keep an eye out for it in your coming video's thanks Mike.
1:38 - a special delivery and a half!
Huh. How ironic XD
Alycidon Deltic XD
where's post man pat when you need him
Yah it's special delivery all right
That bit made me laugh!
As mentioned in my original posting, the loco wasn't connected to the brake system on the stock, so the momentum of the downhill speed kept the train running into the coal train
Glad you're all still enjoying my videos !
The tip offs are what they were and there's not as much variety in traction in the 2011s
I'm now working on my tapes from 1986 up wards
Mike.thanks for still watching
This video amazes me in two ways:-
1) the driver was not seriously injured - he was very lucky.
2) 67002 was not written off, unlike the MGRs that visibly weren't so lucky!
Very well captured.
Ha gotta love that the engine says "Special Delivery" on it. Lol it sure was a delivery the public won't forget. Glad this engine wasn't a write off. It's also hard to believe that this was almost 14 years ago. :)
2:15 look how that loco ended up on top of the coal wagons as well as smashed the bridge
Wow! That is what you call a crash. I wouldn't have liked to have been the unfortunate sod that had to fill out the accident report for that calamity. Must have been reams of it. Lessons were no doubt learned from this accident. Great video, thanks for posting :-)
Thanks for posting this 🙂 some mess there!
I was fortunate to get a tip off of the incident; it's a long way from Cardiff, but I still managed a few clips
That 66 around the corner is like "Fucking hell m8 you had one job"
...and failed badly!
Marc Flint it's a 60 not 66
Where's the 60 you're talking about ?
Ben Conway my mistake
What happened was as the train was top and tailed by 67002 and 67012, 67002 was putting the brakes on and 67012 was taking the brakes off as no one had flicked a switch in 67012 to make her under control of 67002
Thanks for watching, a tip off got me there from Cardiff before they closed the area !
Great video and an apt name for the loco involved.
On a non related point, our readers might be amused to note that after a derailment of an E.M.U not very far outside Havant, the nearest breakdown crane was located in Cardiff. Nice to know a local crane is on hand to help sort out a few problems! The real belter however, is that the Crane Operator himself was observed reading the How To manual whilst operating said crane. All details available online ' in the interests of the general public'. Along with many other quirks arising from various incidents and accidents all over the Southern Region in BR days.Cheers, Alistair ( ex- BR Signalman and Crossing Keeper)
Glad I got there in time for a video. A long drive from Cardiff. How did you find my video. I've noticed other sites using it without giving me credit ( or a fee ! )
Well now thats different.. Great historic capture for you.
Special Delivery of a shower of coal from above, must have been tons of the stuff flying through the air, the radiator is full of the stuff. Excellent video mate.
What happened to the class 67 after the crash was cleaned up?
Was it scrapped or repaired and brought back to service?
Strong coal wagons? or don't they build locos like they used too? Thanks for sharing...;-)
67002 now works the north-south ATW express service along with its siblings 001 and 003
I believe the driver of the class 67 hurt himself when he jumped down from the loco after it hit the bridge
do u hav anymore vid footage of this crash??
I also believe the driver broke his leg jumping from the cab. There was a problem with the brakes as you'll note that another 67 is on the rear, so it should have stopped in time ?
Oh my, I still can't figure out how it happened
Nice one. Can't believe this was 12 years ago.
Dam that's quite a trick.
good reportage & great video many thanks to share it
Happy Xmas
July 27th 2022: just came onto my feed lol. Awesome video and new to me. Unless I saw it with my own eyes, I would never have believed an engine could mount a coal truck like that and ride it like a skateboard!
So many questions! How fast was it going at time of impact....How LOUD must that have been!...What happened to all the back-ups and fail-safe systems?? Imagine if it had not been a coal truck, but a passenger train?!
Great footage, well caught sir!
That must have been a really hard hit to bounce up on the wagons like that. Maybe the driver jumping out is whats saved his life. Brilliant video thanks again :-)
A 67 on top of a hopper wagon is a 'special delivery' indeed!
Superb capture bro.
What was the official verdict on this? was it that the brakes pipes hadn't been connected between loco and train, as happened to a Caledonian Sleeper fairly recently?
"Incorrect use of brake pipe pressure control unit isolating cock" Just checked this on the accident report file...............Mike
What's more, in November 2011, 67001, 67003 and this loco, 67002, were all repainted BLUE in readiness for usage on the Arriva Premier service. Hence this loco is the wrong colour for 2011!
that was the statement given on my EWS driver training course by the trainers so we all then had to operate the brake plunger on a 66 to show we knew how to stoop the train if the brake controller did not work
cool special delivery :-) was 67002 ever repaired or scraped ?
60072 was the 60 on the coal, I cycled down the cyclepath at Lawrence Hill on way to work, fortunately had a tip off so took the camera! 66162 was on an Enterprise held at Dr Days curve too
incredible, I blew up the 67002
First of all I live in the Vale of Glamorgan, which is quite a way from Lawrence Hill, so I couln'd stay all day ( and the next day ) The loco on the back is meant to be there as these postal trains worked top and tail so they could quickly go in and out of Temple Meads OK Mike
The emergency plunger bypasses the E70 and puts a hole in the ATP. The driver was in a state of shock after passing 2 signals at danger
Hi Ian. Also the weight of the stock behind the loco helped to push it up and over until; the loco hit the bridge
Wow to ride up and over like that must have been going some knots, apt name of "Special Delivery" or a new version of a HAA self propelling wagons?
Was 67002 written off?
No, a new cab arrived a couple of months later. Mike
write off for the mga and 67?
No, it was almost 12 yrs ago !!
That's why there's no other video as there were less mobile phones around with video etc
Mike
It's almost ironically funny that the loco is called Special Delivery, and the wagon is a HAA. it's good no one was seriously injured.
the official line when i was on my EWS training course was he claimed 'he hadnt been shown how to'
we all had to operate the plunger to show we could
Looks a right mess! Glad the Driver wasn't too badly injured.. He had a very lucky escape indeed..
so the 67 jumped those two hoppers? then landed in the third? I don't get what happened here.
Special delivery for Mr bridge whoops look like it was first class delivery
Great shots - astonishing scene - poor driver must have thought his time had come seeing what he was approaching - I wonder if riding up on the back of the coal wagons lessened the impact to a degree but still be a hell of a bang judging by the state of the destroyed wagons and distance travelled over them
I've described the cause in the initial comments. 67 Brakes failed, hits and rides up onto back of coal train then when it hits the bridge the coal train couplings break and the train stops down the line
Pinch me ! Is that really a locomotive ON TOP of (what, ? !! ), 2 hoppers ???? ! ! ! Thanks Mike for this very VERY rare crash result !! I can only imagine what it must have sounded like !!! It's a miracle the engine's fuel tanks didn't explode !! Mark, Los Angeles
Yes, the driver of the post office train, 67002, had not connected the brakes of the stock to his loco, so as he ran down the incline from Bristol Parkway he couldn't stop at the signal at Lawrance Hill station, hit the back of the coal train on the same track, his loco, 67002, rode up on the last two wagons and was moved on and hit the bridge as the coal train was slowly moving on..hope this make it clear ?
Thanks for watching Billy. You're no. 87160 to watch my home movie !!
Amazing that they fixed it considering the damage...
Wow, 002 is an unlucky number for the railways clearly! Merseyrail 507 002 derailed, 175 002 hit a lorry and 67 002 got involved in one hell of a special delivery!
You know your numbers; thanks for watching....................Mike, off to catch the Rugby specials at Cardiff this Saturday
i live about half a mile from here. i remember it well.
think you ought to state this was driver error, not brake failure. the previous driver had isolated the brake ready for being dragged in top and tail move, the 2nd driver then done the same the unofficial way. when he got back in the loco he only reinstated the unofficial way as he hadn't checked whether the E70 cock had been operated, then when he wanted the brakes to work, oh dear, still isolated. on top of that he then didn't operate the emergency brake as he claimed he hadn't been shown.
What number is the 60
i also believe the train was very late at Patchway and maybe errors were made there too. Very lucky the platforms weren't full and the 67 didn't tip over
That must have been something to see in motion, a loco scudding past on top of a coal wagon and clouting the bridge...
So THAT's where my parcel went! Glad all was ok injury wise. A nasty situation could well have been the result. Well done to everyone involved. Not easy to cope with.
How does a train steer then?!
Its not everday that you see a diesel travelling in coal wagon
Most certainly a special delivery.
I have some more accidents on tape, so keep watching...........Mike
Amazing footage of this rail accident. A 67 class, I hope no one was badly hurt.
Driver was slightly hurt when he jumped down from the cab before hitting the bridge
Ouch!
The incident wasnt caused by faulty brakes, but an apparent driver error.
Basically, they weren't connected at Parkway
Is anyone ok?
I think 67002 wanted to deliver a special parcel into the coal wagons good job wasn't Christmas Presents lol
If only someone filmed the collision. So a mail train travelling at 50 Mph managed to mount itself onto coal wagons then collide with a bridge. That's a rare incident. In fact, American train crash tests have shown that when a locomotive collides with freight wagons, they tend to mount them.
The coal train was moving ahead, but the mail train didn't stop as the driver hadn't connected the brakes on the stock and it was running downhill too
So the coal train was moving at a slow speed in the same direction or the opposite direction?
Yes, at the start of the video I took a shot of the coal train, swung round to the bridge and the back of the train; next shot the class 67 up on the last few wagons ( cars )
l guess the Train was " Horny " lol , happy to hear no one was killed .
Apt name for the beached loco "Special Delivery".
67002 is now in Arriva but the name has been taken off.
3:10 Special delivery PMSL
Ironic that 67002 is named ‘special delivery’ and well, all it’s delivered is a bridge crash!
So the loco hits back of coal train rises up over the last to and roles on the third into the bridge with the last of the train
The coal train was moving at the time it was hit
I like how it was named special delivery
Stone me ... That must have been one hell of a bingle! Glad to hear of no fatalities.
If the train had taken out the bridge boy would that be a scene.
Amazing was certainley a special delivery!
This happens regularly at this location, the last time it happened was 1855.
So two accidents in just under 150 years makes it regular ? You sir.... are a prick.
Who put the Skip in a skip?
THANKS FOR MAKING 275,373 VIEWS. This is my most popular clip; lucky to get the tip off
