- Every day we spent in Utah gave us another amazing experience. But the 8 hours we spent inside Grand Staircase was definitely some of our favorite experiences. We wish we had allowed another day to finish exploring this area and this is definitely at the top of our must do's when we return some day. Plus we could take Desi with us on our hikes which is always a plus!
We visited the National Monument on October 30, 2021.
There was no fee to access the National Monument but there was a $10 fee to enter Kodachrome Basin as it is a Utah State Park.
Although Johnson Canyon Rd and part of the road to Kodachrome was paved, the majority of our 90 miles were on dirt roads. A 4x4 and high clearance vehicle is recommended. We had talked to the visitor center in Kanab the day before and as it had not rained for a while, they said the roads were passable so we did not have trouble with the truck, which is not 4wd. But as this is a very remote place, we would not venture in without checking with the visitor center and if there was recent rain.
There are quite a few hikes in this area with slot canyons and we were lucky to do two of those - Lick Wash and Willis Creek. The Narrows is another popular hike off Cottonwood Rd and one of our biggest regrets is not coming back to do that hike! But again, we always recommend checking with the visitor center for current conditions.
We hope you enjoy this video. We started with almost 3 hours of footage so getting it down to only 20 minutes was a challenge! And the video doesn't even begin to really show the breathtaking views we experienced that day.
Upcoming videos we will have our time at Zion, Page, Cedar Breaks and the Grand Canyon.
As always - thanks for watching!
*This video is for entertainment purposes only as we are not experts. We are sharing our thoughts and ideas based on our experiences but we always recommend doing your own research and coming to your own conclusions on your camping, hiking and RV needs and modifications!

Definitely going on the list! Looks beautiful. Thanks for the tip!
The Grand Staircase Escalante did not disappoint. That loop will definitely be something we are going to do. The slot canyons are amazing, but we can see why some people just turn around before making it the full 4 miles. Troy had to be tired after carrying Desi all that way. Yeah, I was thinking the rocks looked a little shaky. Those views from the drive were so pretty. The Willis hike looked fun among the canyons there too. Love all the slot hikes you can do in the area. Good advice on the 4X4. The campground looked like a great base station to explore the area. The entire drive and views were spectacular. Thanks, Bill and DeAnna
Hi guys! Definitely put this on your list. We can't wait to get back to this area. Probably going to try and stay at Kodachrome when we go back just to spend a few days here. And lol - yes he was a little tired. I think he was happy he didn't have the waterproof boots so he could stay in the truck on the 2nd hike! But it at least gives us the option of doing these and Desi tolerated being lugged around really well haha. Thanks so much for watching - appreciated! Hope you both are doing well.
Fantastic video and such beautiful scenery! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! And yes - you can't beat southern Utah for scenery!!
Spectacular! Absolutely stunning! Great video! Truly appreciated every part of the video! The parts of the video set to music were so well done! I loved seeing the artistic side of this channel!
Thank you :) Very much appreciated as always! Have a great weekend!
Amazing scenery and narrated part is great too. Stay safe.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Another great episode!
Thank you Leon!! Much appreciated as always!
Looks like another great trip! Definitely going to try to make it up that way in the spring.
One thing you might want to look into if you spend much time in areas without cell service, particularly without 4WD, is a GMRS radio for your truck.I have a 40 watt mobile unit in my SUV, which gives me a point-to-point range of around 40 miles. The unit I have also has the ability to use repeaters, which gives me essentially unlimited range. I've talked to people halfway across the country. I also keep a pair of handheld radios in the vehicle, which can either talk to each other or to the mobile unit. Could come in handy when one of you has to stay with the truck. GMRS does require a license, but it's only $35 for 10 years (just a fee--no test), and one license is good for the whole household.
Hey Jeffrey! Hmmmm. You have given us something else to look at! That sounds like a really good option - thank you. Hopefully you have some really good trips planned as well? How did the new axle hold up - any issues?
Thanks for another awesome video!! Impressive views out there :) What pickup truck are you using to tow your Geo Pro? Any difficulties towing it off road?
Hi! Thank you for watching! We have a 5.7 V8 Toyota Tundra. No issues. We do have a weight distribution hitch and most of the time we don't even feel the camper back there. We haven't done a lot of off roading yet but the times we have, we have had no issues. Both the truck and the camper have performed very well!
Do you have the camper on those dirt roads
Hi - no :) - we camped in Kanab. It was a day trip. There was some campers along the first part on Johnson Canyon rd which was paved. And Kodachrome State Park for the campground - you would likely come in from the North near Cannonville closer to Bryce. Right near Kodachrome was the other paved road. But most of our day was on dirt roads and some a little challenging!
