    From January 2005 through April 2007, he was the Chief Academic Officer at U21 Global and online graduate school based in Singapore. From January 2002 to December 2004, he was Associate Vice President International at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the HR Fullerton Professor of Urban Land Policy in the UBC Sauder School of Business where he served as Dean from 1991 to 1997. He joined UBC in 1968 on completing his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of California (Berkeley). His early research was on land use and economic impacts of Vancouver’s first rail rapid transit system (SkyTrain). His continues to focus on cities, their economies, real estate markets, and transportation increasingly in a competitive global setting. He is a Past Fellow of the Urban Land Institute, an Honorary Life Member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia and the Mortgage Investment Association of British Columbia, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
    He was a Director of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board from February 2008 to June 2016,. In May 2011 he became a Director of the Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC), and Chair from October 2012 through September 2016. Since 2014, he is Chair of Hong Kong-based Vankic Investment (Cayman Islands) Limited. From June 2016 to November 2019, he was a Director of Liberty Living, a top student housing provider in the UK, and Chair from August 2018 until its sale in November 2019. In October 2019 he became Chair of Low Tide Properties in Vancouver. He also serves as a Director of the Canadian Institute for Global Strategic Partnership, a non-profit seeking to expand Canada’s global economic ties. He has served on over two-dozen public, private and not-for-profit boards in real estate, mining, manufacturing, financial services and education.
    He has wholly or partly authored 9 books and 200+ academic and professional articles and applied them in businesses and governments in North America, Asia and Europe. He has given 60+ invited lectures at 50+ universities and institutes in 16 countries, and numerous talks in Canada and 30+ countries.
    The Public Salon Think Tank Series on Wednesday Oct 26th, 2022. addressed some of the most challenging problems of our day. Affordable housing, overdose crisis, the DTES, reconciliation with indigenous led economic success and telling the positive side of our history in British Columbia.
