Excellent rant. Timely too. Just crushed my twenty mile bike ride route. From one hour and thirty two minutes to one hour and twenty minutes. It's not a flat route. Several hill climbs with descents. Go out ten miles turn around back the same ten. It might not seem much. Not to shabby for a 50yr old.
To hit that one hour mark I have to maintain an average speed of 20mph. This is where percentage of energy to maintain speed versus energy against wind resistant is 50/50, roughly. At 30mph, 70% for your energy is just against wind resistance to maintain speed. 35mph 90% against wind resistance. My goal, sub one hour for that twenty mile route.
I could wimp out and head the other way. It's relatively flat and can do that 20 mile route in around 50 minutes. But, where's the fun in that.
