What you really need depends on how old you are. back when I was 20 I could go camping with a foam esky with ice, a 2 man tent and a sleeping bag. Today I need a home on wheels with air conditioning and the works LOL Love the camping spot there, can't get much better than that. The message about putting fires out properly can't be said often enough. We pulled up at a fairly remote lake and parked next to the water and there was a small spot on the ground where someone had lit a fire. Just looked like cold ashes. There was no smoke or anything coming from it so most people would assume it was out. Just to be safe I made sure the tyres didn't go over it but it would have been easy enough just to park right on top of it considering where it was. As soon as I checked it I found there were red hot coals still glowing and this was LITERALLY 3 metres from the edge of a huge lake. No excuse at all for leaving it like that. If someone had parked on it then they would have lost a tyre at the very least and might have lost an entire rig. If a kid had walked on it they would have had severe burns. Everyone needs to learn to put fires out with water, lots of it.
That's crazy, so lucky! It's just laziness and no excuses. We usually pour the dish water on the ashes if there is limited water. It makes me sick every time I hear another kids has burns due to a old fire. Thanks for the support and positive feedback 😀

Great advice buddy. What freaks me out is these idiots that take a dump in the sticks and can’t be arsed to dig a hole to keep our bush looking as we found it. NOPE! Let’s just pollute the crap out of it then get pissed off when parks fence it or shut us out.

Yes spot on, it's getting to be a real problem just with the amount of ash on the sand in the camp grounds, let alone the risk of kids hurting themselves. Thanks for the support 👍
You can never have too much light. So sounds like you had plenty. On beach trips I pack an extra tent pole, a double guy rope and a doubled length of rope to attach to two existing poles to make a very large clothes line for all the towels and swimmers. It's very efficient. Thanks for the video.

I've actually just come back from a five day trip on Moreton Is with my family (missus and two small kids) and stayed at an offgrid site just up a bit further from Ben Ewa campground. It was the very first offgrid trip since we bought our vehicle and caravan both of which I have customised from standard specifically for offgrid touring. My caravan is a 15ft offroad hybrid which has all the creature comforts including aircon able to run (for a few hours) off the 3 x 120x iTechworld LiFePo4 batteries (and iTechworld 3000W inverter) ... for the benefit of the kids should they need it ; ). As far as I could tell, I think we were the only ones that had a caravan on the island when we were there but the trusty Prado towed it without any problem at all and I never even looked like getting bogged the whole time including driving high up on the beach not long after high tide.
One thing I found was that my 200L water tank in the caravan required topping up almost daily (kids showering) despite being as frugal as possible during showers (wet, lather, rinse). The tap water available at Ben Ewa is relatively clear whilst the water from Comboyuro Campground is a tiny bit brown (from the tea trees) but I do understand there is no issue with either (for showering) ... the missus was just a little worried for the kids sake. Happy to say that I was able to harvest some of the rainwater coming off the awning and feed that back into the caravan water tank. Weight permitting, I plan to eventually get myself a good sized water bladder to put in the rear passenger footwell of the car.
What toilet system do you have in your camper? I have the standard Thetford system in the caravan but I'd really like to swap it out for a composting toilet one day. Despite the expense, I believe they are worth it from an environmental point alone. Your thoughts?
Also, how do you find the 'home schooling' option for your kids. This is one of the main issues burning in the back of my mind with my own kids as far as hitting the road for an extended period of time. My eldest is currently only in Prep so her 'formal' schooling will start next year.
I've been following your travels for a while now and appreciate your approach to things. I have to admit that I haven't exactly adopted a similar minimalistic approach to yourself but you have inspired me to get out there and experience this stunning country we live in with my family. Your videos demonstrate how little you actually need to travel the country as a family and take in all the wonderful experiences and sights. I look forward to your future travels and travel tips. 👍
Hey mate there is no right or wrong way to camp and travel, your set-up sounds awesome, who wouldn't want air con in the Australian summer 😀. I just like sharing that if you can't afford that stuff, or if you're vehicle can't tow all the weights you are still fine to travel and camp. I am a little old fashioned too and always behind the times 😅.
Don't really know to much about the composting toilets but from what I hear they are a great upgrade from the chemical toilets.
As with home schooling, because our kids where only in grade 2 and 4, and we only went for 6 months, we could actually get a schooling exemption. The principal said go for it and they'll Learn so much. They just wanted the kids to do a journal, reading and a little maths and that was it. But we went above that and made them do more. There grades actually increased when they got back and were showing other kids how to problem solve!
So definitely recommend if you are thinking about a big trip, do it while they are in primary school, it's so much easier 😀

Guys love the channel but more importantly I love the NO BS. Great to see a family focus on their kids and getting out there into the beautiful country. We were contemplating Moreton and had been told (as you said yourself) there are some really smelly spots! We, like you, have respect for the beautiful country we live in and leave no evidence we were there except for it being cleaner. Is the Western side the "better" side for this do you think? I've camped on both sides of Moreton and I really enjoy the western side. It might seem a little less wild and challenging, but it's more beautiful and protected by the winds.
If thats a kings mppt controller, ditch it before it fries your battery and get a quality one or ctek.

I would put the bogger / toilet in a shower tent, dont like the idea of crapping right next to where everyone is sleeping.
A lot of people think the same, and I did too until we had young kids with us. It's surprising but you don't smell anything unless it's in use. We even put the 4wd in the patrol on weekend trips in the swag now. I rate them 👌

Thanks mate, she's doing really good now, but took a long time to recover. They don't make this model trailer any more because most people want all the bells and whistles, which is a shame because it only weighs 1100kg empty!
@@GoingOverland Yes, bells and whistles be dammed, frugal weight, great layout and that rear kitchen and pantry is magnificent. Love that it sits below the 4x4 roof line when in tow and you get plenty of head room when raised. The newer hybrids sit very high, well above the 4x4 roof line, almost like full caravans and I wonder, whats the point of having them?
Great to see you back. I have a GQ myself and am looking to get the same wheel / tyre set up. Please can you tell me the wheel make and size and tyre size us are you having to run spacers with the incressed size? Thanks.
Definitely no spacers, they are nothing but trouble. 33x12.5x15s on 15x8s rims, neg 22 deg offset. Rims from dynamic and took 3 months!

Yes, absolutely, I can't wait to the kids are older and don't want to sleep inside the camper. I'm going to remove bunks and put a shower inside and move kitchen from rear to side so we don't need the rear awnings or walls.

Hi mate, in regards to your 30 year old vehicle, it would be great to know what it's cost you while you've owned it and the number of years you've had it. While you say it is inexpensive, if you can get the lending, with my old cars I've found the repairs more than annual interest on a new car. And you are also forgoing the utility value of a new car being nicer, safer, more mod cons etc
Yeah but to buy a new landcruiser and set it up like the patrol it would be anywhere from $130k and up! And all the parts that wear out (bush's, suspension, alternator)usually need replacing after 10 years with serious offroad use, so unless you upgrade every 10 years, it's the same cost on any vehicle. But so true about safety and comfort in a new vehicle, definitely lacking in the old patrol, but it's such a fun car to drive with lots of character 🤠👍🍻
@@GoingOverland I've done both, just be interested in the dollars and cents. Plenty of good 4x4's that aren't a ripoff like Landcruiser. The new Everest is the same size as a GQ Patrol for example

We were actually there in January, but wasn't motivated to upload video. Beach was OK to drive on, middle Rd was solid from memory. Our previous video showed alot more of the beach and track conditions and might help more

I am not sure I understand "off the grid"..you are not off the grid. You are car camping on an island.
Off grid camping/ living comes down to living with nature. All else is drama for likes and follows for the clueless.
