Guide tip: 1) don’t tell your client it’s your first trip of the season and it’s mid August. 2) as your driving out to a world class river don’t tell the client you’ve never guided that river before but you called the shops “senior guide “ for advice and he said “ just float down the middle and drag a rubber legs” 3) shop owners, if you want to hire your relatives or friends for the summer keep them in the shop. Because, $500 is a lot of money to some of us, two days drive is a pain in the ass and the year long wait for the opportunity is a drag.
I've never used a guide for several reasons, 1. no money, 2. I can fall in the stream without help, I've proved it over and over again.

As a person who has taken many clients out with guides for entertainment and for business reasons, I think this video should be mandatory on every trip. Mostly we used deep sea fishing and lake fishing guides. But occasionally I would book a guide for trout fishing. I always, yes always met with the guide first and made sure I understood what he had in mind and also I could tell guide (shouldn't say he cause have had several excellent lady guides too) anything about my clients... such as smokers, drinkers, experienced and never held a rod in their life. I had clients that didn't like to fish at all but just wanted an excuse to get away from work or even their spouses. One client always wanted to go deep sea fishing and would sleep about 80% of the time. Was fine with me, he was happy and I got to do a lot of undisturbed fishing. One client got all bent out of shape because he didnt like a guide trying to tell him how to catch more fish, client was a mr know it all. The guide cut the trip short took us back to the dock and put us off his boat. I never laughed so much (inside) in my life watching the reaction of the client. All the guide said was sorry I upset you, how about I take you to one of my favorite places and put you on it. He was referring to the dock of course. We were about half a mile away before any of us realized he was taking us back to the dock. Sorry so long winded, really enjoy your videos and if ever get out your way would be honored to set up a trip with you, sir.

I dry fly fish (I'm a snob) a certain Montana river for 24 years. All day long I hear guides shouting over and over "Strike, strike, STRIKE!!!" It must drive you guys crazy. I know a guide on an eastern river who asked a sport, I mean client, how far he could accurately cast. The sport, I mean client said 40'. They got on a pod of rising fish and the caster could not cast 20'. The guide looked at the sport ('cause that is what he was) and said "This trip is over". He lifted the anchor and rowed out.

Took a day with a well known guide. He asked my goal. I told him..read water better. An hour in he concentrated on my buddy. Just checked on me every so often. At lunch he asked how I was doing..if I had any questions..if I was having fun. I just smiled. At the end of the day he asked how I did. I told him fine. Better after his instructions on reading the river. Something that will make me a better fisherman long after the trip. He just smiled. Sometimes a guide just knows when to step back. Great experience
DON’T BE AFRAID TO TELL YOUR GUIDE THAT YOUR LEFT HANDED! Had someone wait until we got off the boat to explain how uncomfortable the reel was.

A lot of truths are said in jest and this video is no exception. My only pet peeve as a client is a guide who wants to give me a 8-hour fishing lesson, cast-by-cast. Funny, entertaining video overall.

Get good guides. First time ever on a guided trip in the Missouri,fishing was tough, 2 eats and one fish all day. I appreciated the critique that the guide was giving but it got to a point where i felt like i was paying for someone talking down me. we still tipped well but keep in mind the customer, the customer is always first.
I gotta tell you cursing out the tree that grabbed my fly for me, is part of the fun.

Awesome video. I’m much more of a teach yourself kind of person when it comes to fly fishing and finding spots, but I’m thinking about taking a guided trip to support a local fly shop/guide that gave me some stellar advice for a solo trip recently. For whatever reason, despite working in the service industry for almost 20 years, tipping hadn’t crossed my mind, but that makes perfect sense.

Guide Tip II: Don`t tell your customer that yesterday the fishing was much better than today. I received this comment 90% of my guided trips. After many years of fishing the same rivers in Patagonia, I decided to buy my own raft and saved tons of dollars. I also do not have to worry about booking my trips several weeks in advance. It was the best purchase of my life.
Guide tip: Dont call clients sports to their faces. We get it; you know guide slang. Congrats.

Some guides get frustrated too easily with beginner clients instead of being patient. The point is to make it fun for everyone.
I’m glad someone finally said what the tip should be. I’ve always operated under the 20% rule and I know when a guide has done me a solid and will tip more or when I know the shuttle company is different than the guide service because I assume they pay that out of pocket.
But I’ve been guilty of being the pissy client (you mean sport) mad at himself, too. And I fall down a lot.
if the guide is an owner, and not paying someone else a cut, then I think the price should be enough that they don't expect a tip. If they are splitting with a lodge or referral then by all means 20% or more.
I just paid my guide 5 for a 7 hour drift. He got my tip.

I agree with almost everything, except I love hearing client’s fish stories and I love having little kids on guide trips. Bring your infants and I’ll make use we have a sweet nap time set up for them. My boys were catching fish on their first birthdays, haha. I want anyone to come and enjoy the river and I do my absolute best to accommodate. Because when the kid is that young my focus is no longer on guiding fishing, but shaping the future generation of fly anglers. We take lots of breaks to run through the woods and what not. I love it.
If I showed up somewhere to fish in a drift boat and I was told the guide was ill and they only had a nice kid who knew the boat but knew nothing about fly fishing I’d be fine with that. I like the experience, the float and the company but I don’t want to feel pressured to change my techniques, leader/tippet or use cheap flies if I know what I’m doing. I appreciate the experience and will perhaps sacrifice success for enjoying myself more. I did a trip on the Missouri which was great but on day two we settled on a much shorter float to enjoy more time fishing to rising fish. You certainly have to speak up to optimize your experience. I also assure the guide that he doesn’t need to worry about my success as long as I’m enjoying myself.

What do you need to know? Other than it is perfectly OK to take a totally over played fish completely out of water with dry hands and photo op the hell out of the gasping for life said fish for an entire minute. It is not like it could be the human equivalent to running 400 yards all out then getting kicked in the nuts and having someone put duct tape over your mouth and nose and telling you to smile and have a nice day. ;0 oh yeah and barbless hooks for your catch and release

To me having never had a guided trip, I literally only want you to take me somewhere cool, the possibility for large fish exists then fish WITH me. I dont spend 2 hours a night tying flies to use all of yours. I can carry my own damn lunch. If you want me to row a bit I'm game. You can catch all the fish, I'll take the pictures...its a good day on the water.

Use guides to learn, CZcams is great but you need feedback. A good guide will stay positive and work with your skill level and adapt to what you can focus on for improvement. Also will cheer you on when you do something well, we all need cheerleaders!

I don’t agree with the tipping part. I trained hunting dogs for years. One thing I learned is there is ppl from all walks of life sending their dog to be trained. $2k in training is everything to someone and nothing to others. I still trained their dogs exactly the same and didn’t expect and tip. Sure some tips were GREAT and some didn’t tip at all. Some just gave me a few pheasant from their successful hunts with their new dog. I was ok with that.

We took a week-long trip to Cuba that included the guide fees. Our guide put us on bones, tarpon and shots at permit during conditions the outfitter said were the worst they could remember. His only complaint was limited to "Aaaaeee", when my buddy buried a tarpon fly in his leg (it was crazy windy). He got a HUGE tip plus a ten-weight setup and other gear. There were tears and man-hugs. Here we are, 10 years later, and I still talk about it.
I had a similar experience in Cuba, but we had great weather.

Why am I expected to pay part of their salaries with a suggested tip ?
Based on the one time I've ever used a guide (talk about a gruff guy!), and watching this video, I see more reason for me to stay away from a guide. I mean, I want to be a good 'sport' and all but watching you glare at the camera while saying have fun... Kind of like yelling at someone to calm down. That said, I'm gonna take a chance and subscribe for a while because I'm willing to learn some stuff!
As an angler who has taken a few guided trips, here are some tips on how to be an adequate guide, not even a good guide.
1. Be awake before the time you told the client to meet you.
2. When you charge $500 for a day including lunch, make sure your “day” is at least 8 hours and the lunch is better than a cheese sandwich.
3. When you take your client to a River, make sure there is water in it and the fish are alive.
4. On #3, if you arrive and the dam was shut off and dead fish are everywhere except a few half dead ones lying in pools struggling for oxygen, don’t ask your client to fish for those dead / dying fish.
5. If your client tells you fishing for dying fish in small puddles is bad sportsmanship, don’t trot away angry and refuse to speak to the client for the rest of the trip.
6. Care more about your clients fishing day than your ability to take a photo to post on social media to get more clients.

What do y’all think about this: I was fly fishing tarpon in Florida. About 6 or 8 guides fish this particular area. We got up at 4AM, motored out to the spot we wanted and dropped the hook to wait for light. Shortly afterwards another guide came up and asked us to go elsewhere so his client could fish there. My guide was about to agree to this. I stood up in the boat and told the other guide no, we got up at 4 for a reason, to claim a spot. It got very heated. My guide was apologizing to the other guide about me entering in to this conversation. He felt this was a guide only thing. Then we motored off to another spot. I was boiling furious. Just as we were about to drop the anchor I told the guide we’re done, go back to the ramp, trip is over. It was day one of a five day trip. I felt that his loyalty to his fellow guide trumped his loyalty to me, the paying client. I fished with him for the last eight years. I know these guys have to get along all season, there’s only so many guides and so many spots to set up at this location. But I get exactly 5 days to fish for tarpon a year if I’m lucky. And I pay for it. My guide was pissed as hell at me and refused to take the days fee that I offered him. The next week I sent him a check in the mail for the day and he cashed it. So, should I have sat there passively and let the guides work it out, or was I right to assert our right to be there since we got up at 4 to claim that spot? There’s no reason to get up that early if not to get your spot . You can’t sight fish til the sun is high. These guys could all have a conference call every night and divvy up the spots beforehand, their clients wouldn’t know anything about it, and then we could all sleep in and go out there at 10:30! Which is about the earliest you can see fish.
And oh yeah, the first year he told me that I was to provide our lunch, which I dutifully did for the next 8 years.
Big question. Why are fly guided trips 4 to 7 hundred $ a day on a rinky dink little drift boat or raft but out here in the NW, guided trips on the Columbia River or ocean in a 80 thousand dollar boat towed by an 80 thousand dollar truck catching 8 to 80 pound fish only costs 2 to 4 hundred a day?

So I got a guide to learn stuff blah blah it was great tons of fun plenty of fish great guide. But with the tipping I dont understand I am a server at a restaurant for most the time and we get tips I am providing a service but (by no means deserve tips)with the guide the expensive price I pay should include the tip? Yes no?
No. A lot of the times the guide works for a company, which gets most of what you pay, sort of like a mechanic, and come to think of it, you should probably tip your mechanic as well.
@@sabiangriffin3713 for a premium job like a mechanic that charge extreme rates unless its a mom and pop shop I pry wouldn't tip ,it would build loyalty i guess if your car was always there 🤷🏽♂️

Oh, I have so many things to say based on 200+ guided days around the world and all over the West. All I will say is, if you haven’t done a video for guides, have the balls to do so. Remember what sports, I mean PAYING AND TIPPING clients do to actually get to the point where they are stepping into your lovely (not always) boat. Guiding is a profession and therefore guides should be professional in how they look, act and support their clients. You the guide are not more important than your client, so don’t act like it. I (and my 35 year fishing buddy) have had some amazing people as guides and we have had some people that should have picked some other career on some other planet. Lastly, remember that tips like bonuses are for doing more than what the “base salary” job description says you are supposed to do. It’s not an entitlement, so go above and beyond and be really surprised with up to 100% tips, knuckleheads and maybe a steak dinner and expensive wine on top of it.

drives me crazy when you get the" I know how to cast" guy out there and you show him 15 times how to do it right and he goes back to messing it up.
I'm curious about tipping. Most guides I know of are in business for themselves. Why don't they just charge enough to make a living without tips? It just seems to add a needless layer of uncertainty or anxiety about the etiquette of an unfamiliar situation. (I've only engaged a guide once, years ago, but I'm planning to treat my son to a guided trip this year.)

Jim King I’ve used a guide a couple times way back when and I tipped them half before we started fishing. That seemed to take the pressure off both of us. I hope you and your boy catch a bunch!
I feel the same way. Why are we tipping for everything these days? I only tip waitresses and the first mate. I assume the captain/business owner is charging what he needs to make a living. The helpers are likely making less and doing a lot of the work.
A year late, but out west, most guides do not and cannot work for themselves... have to be a licensed "outfitter" and licenses are limited blah blah blah... hard to get started and you're legally required to work for someone else at the start
Guides definitely charge enough to make a good living. If your a broke guide it’s cause you suck. And I don’t give a fuk how early you get up. Or how your day is long cause you gotta wash your boat. Your still fishing for a living. Suck it up puszy.

People get so upset about this... if you don't want a guide or think they're too expensive, buy some cheap gear and get at it lol. Anyone who has ever worked a job with "clients" of any sort know there are ones that are fun and ones that are a drag... they should make videos like this for every industry

Perhaps a good strategy would be, if the client exhibits any of the above mentioned behavior is to just be up front about it, and say you no longer wish to guide for them, and offer a prorated refund for the portion of the hours not used.
I don't know, this video gave me the impression I should avoid guides. With the endless amount of information from books and the internet to cross reference and from practice, field work. Don't really see the nessisty, I personally don't care for the attitude either. Just my perspective.

a) leave the beers at home-they taste better after the trip.
b) leave the pills at home
c) leave the fish whistle at home
-be coherent on the trip.

People need to understand this stuff, man. I think what’s happened is that people grew up hearing “the customer’s always right!” and automatically assume that if they’re paying for something, it’s THEIR WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. Customer entitlement...I’m paying you, so I’m the boss at all times no matter what.
I’ve always tried my best to be a reasonable customer/client but it really sunk in when I opened my own business 5 years ago. There are people out there who think that because they’re spending $30 on something, they have the right to walk all over you. Is everyone like that? Of course not...most people just wanna get through life, have a good time and go easy. But there are also some major “it’s my money, I can do what I want!” douchebags. I’m looking at some in the comment section as we speak. For the first few years, I dealt with it. But after I realized I had a decent/growing client base, BOOM...out the door you go if you’re an unreasonable asshole.
