      @michaelpalmieri7335 Před 2 lety +7

      I know which one you mean. It was called "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You." It was about a futuristic society in which, at age nineteen, everyone undergoes the "transformation" (which is supposedly "voluntary") which makes them look beautifully identical to thousands of others, but one young girl, Marilyn, age eighteen, who's rather plain looking, doesn't want to go through with the procedure, because she considers it to be nothing more than a method of enforcing, not just physical, but mental and emotional conformity. She wants to look like herself instead of everyone else. Unfortunately, her mother, her Uncle Rick, and her best friend Valerie, who've all had the operation (and who all think and act alike, and thus can't understand Marilyn's feelings), see this as unthinkable.
      Marilyn is first taken to a doctor, who decides that the reasons for her not wanting the transformation should be removed, and then to a psychiatrist, who tries to mentally convince her that the operation is "necessary."
      Marilyn is then involuntarily admitted into a hospital, where they apparently plan to force her to receive the transformation, no matter what she thinks of it. She realizes that the procedure isn't as "voluntary" as everyone says it is, that people are mentally pressured to go through with it. In vain, she tries to make her mom, Valerie, and the doctors understand the true purpose of the transformation. She remembers something that her more liberal-minded father told her: "If everybody is beautiful, then no one will be, because without ugliness, there can be no beauty." After mentioning this, she adds her own opinion: "They don't care if you're beautiful or not, they just want everyone to look the same!" Again, nobody seems to comprehend her feelings. (It turns out that Marilyn's father committed suicide after his transformation, because, as she says, "when they took away his identity, he had no reason to go on living!")
      Later that night, Marilyn tries sneak out of the hospital, only to find herself in an operation room with a doctor and nurse waiting for her. In the end, she emerges from the transformation looking, talking, and THINKING like Valerie, to whom she says, "And the nicest part of all, Val, I look just like you."
      The operation has been a success.
      It's interesting to note that all the adult male characters in this story (the doctors, the psychiatrist, and Marilyn's Uncle Rick) are played by Richard Long (who you might remember from the 1960s TV "Western" series, "The Big Valley") and that all the adult female characters (Marilyn's mother, the mother's servant, the nurses, and a woman who had the operation) are played by Suzy Parker, who was well-known as a popular fashion model. She wasn't much of an actress, but she was quite lovely to look at, so the writers and producers of "The Twilight Zone" decided that if they were going to present an episode about a world where everyone has to be as beautiful as ever, then the only logical choice was to use her.

  • @oldkitten8598
    @oldkitten8598 Před 2 lety +14

    "Married At First Sight" is, actually, a really interesting show. The people that sign up aren't necessarily ruining their lives; it's all what they make of the experience.
    The people that signed up wanted to settle down with the right person, but were struggling to do so the traditional way, or at least using the methods they were accustomed to. By completing a personal profile and allowing the relationship experts to essentially play match-maker (an old school method that, actually, worked in its time), they have a better chance at finding the right person for them.
    Obviously, things can get rocky because they're married to someone they just met. But, the couples that took the experience seriously and gave it a real chance actually found real happiness.
    It's not something that I would do, but I can see how it could work for someone else.

    • @ru3761
      @ru3761 Před 2 lety +3

      I agree! Also, if you read some sociologist literature about what makes people stay together for a long time, it’s not „being soulmates”, „knowing this person for long” or „similar features”, but strong belief in the institution of marriage (other aspects are religion, kids, and liabilities). Some people who come to the show simply have the faith in marriage and in experts’ abilities to match correctly, so it may be enough to make the relationship work. Besides, the thing that the two people from the couple want the same things - stabilization, marriage, kids - is also half of the success, because people get easily attracted to someone just by wanting the same things in life.

    While I personally have never seen an episode of "Keeping up with the Kardashians" or are a fan of any one of that family I have to say that it clearly wasn't a bad idea considering how popular it was and the fact that it only ended because they got a bigger deal to continue the show on another network. I feel that the only reason it's on this list is because WatchMojo, like so many others, disliked it and was tired of its hype.
    While all the other shows on this list was a huge failure that only lasted a season or two, "Keeping up with the Kardashians" was a huge success that lasted 14 years and still continues as "The Kardashians".

    I remember a british show called There's Something about Miriam in the early 2000s, the premise was similar to like the bachelor but you had like 20 guys trying to win over this girl Miriam but the big reveal at the end was she was trans, it was in poor taste and if I remember rightly many of the guys on the show sued. I'm not transphobic in the slightest but that was rather manipulative

      This was years later, by the way.
      The man said that the producers were not picking kids at random, but looking for kids with specific character traits: THEN putting the kids into situations intended to stress out most of the group.
      Followed by the producers taking a week's worth of footage and mixing and matching scenes to make it appear that events and arguments were happening, but really weren't.

    Early 2000's on SpikeTV, the was a reality show called The Joe Schmoe Show.
    It had the typical premise: big house, contestants all live together, one is voted off each week.
    The twist, however, was that all the contestants were paid actors; all of them expect for Joe, whom had know idea it was all a setup and that he was guaranteed to win the entire time.
    The longer that the show was on, the more I started to feel really bad for Joe.
    He was so sincere, trustworthy and kind.

    I can add two here.
    Actually one confirmed and one urban legend.
    First: One that was cancelled before it aired. The premise was that a family would be moved into a home and their neighbors would rate them. In the commercial it showed one man saying angrily "We don't want those tattooed freaks living next to us!".
    This got so much flak in the media the series was cancelled before it aired.
    The Second is an urban legend, and that is how I will tell it.
    This series was supposedly inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies, and involved renting a Hollywood mansion and moving in a poverty- level family, giving them thousands of dollars then filming them as they experience the luxurious Hollywood lifestyle for the first time.
    A group of multi-millionaires who lived in Hollywood found out about it and went to protest the idea to the tv studio, saying that however the series played out THEY would be portrayed as a "Bunch of stuck up snobs" and it would negatively impact both them and all of Hollywood as well.
    The studio replied that yes they had a series like that, BUT it was in the beginning planning stage! They were not yet ready to begin making it as they hadn't begun looking for a mansion to rent, much less begin looking for the family to fill it, AND had not started assembling a camera crew or a production crew for it.
    And their fears of negative publicity came true: When this news hit the media this group of Hollywood millionaires was portrayed as a "bunch of pompous arrogant stuck up snobs who were protesting the IDEA for a reality show "

      That's not an urban legend. CBS actually did try to make a reality show based off the Beverly Hillbillies which was going to be called "The Real Beverly Hillbillies", but it got shelved for the reasons stated above. However, it did prompt FOX to recruit Paris Hilton to do "The Simple Life" where she and Nicole Richie lived with a farm family in Oklahoma. And yes, it was obnoxious, but it was a huge hit. Fortunately for FOX, they knew people were watching it to see the train wreck Paris Hilton was, so they tweaked the format for subsequent seasons.
