  • Garden Home host P. Allen Smith show us how lilies are one of those plants that offer a big return on your investment. Just a little effort in planting the bulbs will reap years of fragrant, colorful blooms. Their bright colors call in butterflies and bees, the lily's primary pollination assistants. Insect helpers jump from flower to flower, carrying pollen from the stamens to the pistils.
    Topics Include:
    Types of Lilies
    Caring for Lilies
    Working with Cut Lilies
    Pineapple Lilies
Lilium is a large family of plants and some are easier to grow than others. Three common types are Asiatic, Oriental and Trumpet.
Asiatic Hybrids - One of the most carefree summer bulbs that I grow in my garden are Asiatic lilies. They are perfect for cutting gardens and containers. I like to add five to 10 bulbs to my raised vegetable garden so I will have plenty on hand to use as cut flowers later in the summer. Asiatics are early to bloom and easy to grow. They don’t have much fragrance but they make up for it in color.
Oriental Hybrids - Like a Southern grand dame dressed in her Sunday best, Oriental lilies are bright, flamboyant and heavily perfumed! I can’t imagine my garden without these royal beauties. They will perform well in partial shade.
Trumpet and Aurelian Hybrids - The lilies in this group tend to bear striking trumpet-shaped blooms on tall stalks. Many are quite fragrant too. The flowers are so large the plant may require staking.

All my lilies are beautiful this year. I have some red and white asiatic lilies planted at my mailbox. My husband's friends are bragging about how pretty they are and they don't usually pay any attention to flowers .

Serendipitous! Just today I was thinking about planting lilies in my garden. Do Asiatic lilies also want a well-drained soil like pineapple lilies?

How do you deal with the red bugs that come with them. Mine were great for one year then the battle with the bugs began. They eat the lilies down to the stems:-(

Quick question, I’ve planted some tree lillies and ideally I would like the blooms and scent to last as long as possible. Would removing the sticky stigma and keeping the pollen anthers work?

How do I protect my lilies from spider mites? Up until this year, I never had to worry about them. This year, they are destroying the leaves and the stem of my lilies. Also, if my lily appears to be yellowing, do I prune at the stem then?

I've found that a light dusting of diatomaceous earth both on the plant & the soil around the stem works well. When I am out of that I mix a few drops of blue dawn in a spray bottle of water kills spider mites & a variety of other pests on my plants.

The orange Lily's has a dark orange pieces that gets all over when you though it and it's like a dye - can't get it out - so I wouldn't cut the dark orange ones
