Alone in the Dark - PS5/Xbox Series X/S Tech Review - A Survival Horror Classic Revamped

- čas přidán 7. 06. 2024
- The original Alone in the Dark - hailing all the way back from 1992 - is re-imagined with Unreal Engine 4. The story and puzzle elements are dramatically overhauled, where PS5, Series X and S strive for 60fps gameplay in a decent performance mode. However there are technical rough points to this release which detract from what could be a much better game.

450p to give us the authentic experience of the original Alone in the Dark
Dreamcast version of The New Nightmare is the original and best-looking by far, while also retaining the original soundtrack. The PS2 and PC ports have botched soundtracks sadly.
@@VergilHiltsLT Dreamcast's ost is decent. But PS1 still takes the cake in the sound department.
Im glad its 450p, because i will finally be able to dust off my old bulky 480p tv from the early 2000s and play this on my series s
Wild, the rog ally runs this better.
@@victorfadel06 It's the exact same soundtrack on Dreamcast with better quality sound effects. What are you talking about?
I remember playing the “shareware” version as a kid. Looks comical now but was scary back then!
The music has some real Angelo Badalamenti vibes

I thought 450p was the lowest Ive seen on Series S but then I remembered immortals of aveum's 436p. Geez, at least that one was UE5, 450p in UE4 is an achievement
Getting the 360/PS3 experience there.
I had so much fun with this game. I beat it 7 times (4 as Edward, 3 as Emily) in 2 weeks and plan to play it again several more times. The studio did incredibly well with this remake, reboot or reimagining and it pays homage to the 1992 original in a very faithful and respectful manner. The game's story, characters, atmosphere, noir vibe, music, and eerie 1920s rural American South setting are all on point, the biggest main attraction (not many games set in 1920s), and fit perfectly this latest Alone in the Dark. Even if far from perfect with the janky combat, occasional stutters and getting stuck at random obstacles issues, this is overall a fun and solid game. A pleasant revival with a firm foundation to this badly mismanaged series of over 30 years. I feel confident it will gain an audience in time, satisfy most veterans, and be an ideal ENTRY point for newcomers to the series. Hoping for the Alone in the Dark series to continue.
I really liked the game too. It turned out great. It was interesting exploring the manor and working through the combat and puzzles.
It might not be perfect, but games like this , don't come around enough. I really hope it does well.
It flopped. Less than 1K reviews on Steam.
No one is playing this
doesn't seem to be doing well.. but I mean, take 5 seconds to put up a side by side comparison of 2008's Alone in the Dark (yes I'm aware the game was a departure in genre and mechanics) on xbox 360 1080p footage with this 2024 game.. at times, you would question which is the newer one.. sooo yeah.. modern gaming
@@MO_Disk I'm sorry, but what are you smoking? those games as miles apart in terms of graphics. the only thing the 2008 one has going for it is the procedural fire system, which looks great but is only used once in the whole game.
the real problem with the new one is that it looks like a mediocre RE7 clone. and also not scary whatsoever, but that could just be me.

Why am I hearing haters say the PS5 is suffering a lot more these day?! This is yet another show of the PS5 keeping the edge over the X
As rough as it is today, the original is such a classic!
450p with UE4? WTF is happening?!
Terrible optimization
Presumably UE4 optimization issues, because the game seems to run fine on Steam Deck outside of random FPS dips.
Yoshi's Crafted World of all fucking games runs at a higher resolution and framerate on SWITCH

LOVE this game :)
Thanks for the analysis as one didn't actually exist it seemed like for quite it a bit of time when it first released
I love this game so much too. I beat it 2 weeks ago and am replaying it now and still love it. The devs completely got it right. Perfect atmosphere, I love the graphics, the jazz music absolutely fits both Alone in the Dark and the character of Edward Carnby perfectly. I want this franchise to continue just like this. I’d love them to reimagine Alone in the Dark 3 which has the horror atmosphere with a western vibe
Series S games seem increasingly similar to some 'impossible ' switch ports.
I feel like the resolution mode could be better, games like Callisto Protocol, or Tales Of Arise (in his Quality mode) goes at 1440p at 30fps (in UE4 too) maybe this Alone In The Dark is more demanding? I don't know haha
I hope against all odds that this does well and that they decided to release the source code for the first three games to the public. I'd love to see a source port.
You mean you hope against all odds?

Welcome back Thomas!!
I thought the demo was actually really good on the Series X. When I first saw that it was coming and the demo was available, I did a double take. Because it’s been so long since we’ve heard anything from the series. One of my favorites back on the 3DO.
Demo was good, and I enjoyed the full game too. Really good survival horror game with nice graphics.
The 3DO port was a lot of fun. SO much to play already I will pick this up on a Steam sale eventually.
Absolutely loved my first playthrough
This game really doesn't look like it should be making the PS5/Series X struggle even in Quality mode.
I would recommend performance mode. I can generally see a large gulf in the resolution difference between graphics and performance modes, however that's not the case here. Performance mode looks pretty much identical. That said, both modes struggle when you reach a point in the game and it starts raining outside. The rain completely destroys the framerate even when you're indoors.
Very much agreed it has worse looking character models than the Mafia 1 remake which is a frickin 4 year old game now and I'd even go as far as comparing the graphics to this indyish game called The Chant (great game btw especially for a budget title) which also has better character models but the environments and lighting look just about on par which is sad because it's a lower budget game that's 3 years old and can be bought for like 5 bucks on sale and like 25 at normal price so yah paying full price for the Alone in the Dark reboot would definitely be a crime.
@@theninjamaster67 100% i really do think that developers are getting lazy and aren't optimising games properly because the consoles are now just PCs. There is still a lot of power to get out of the PS5/Series X. I've got a decent PC and a Series X and i've been pleasantly surprised
about the power of it.
@@WalesGaming86 Honestly the only proof I needed that these big companies aren't optimizing their games was installing an optimization mod for Hogwarts Legacy and my framerate going from just over 40 fps at max settings (minus ray tracing) with DLSS performance to a solid 60 maxed out with DLSS quality.
@@theninjamaster67 Exactly mate, look at the optimisation we had for the PS2 & PS1....developers are just lazy now. They know they can slap FSR on it and get to 30fps 720p and call it a day. It's not good enough. This game should be 4k 60fps, without question.
Hook the Series S to a CRT and problem solved lol. I'm actually curious if you could use something like the retrotink 4k to upscale and simulate scanlines how would that look...
Alone in the Dark on GBC impressed me back in the day with its graphics. For a Gameboy Color game it looked very good. At least the screenshots in video game magazines. I’ve never played the series.

Stereo sound in 2024... Great job...
Will VRR help with the performance issues at all?
It won’t hurt but it also never helps of that makes sense
why does 30 fps improper frame pacing occur? is it because of GPU, if so why not drop the resolution to 1800p or 1900p instead of 2160p?
Sometimes, it can be due to limited overhead. Other times, it's just the way the developer has implemented the Vsync. In this case its probably because of the way they implemented it, so a drop in resolution wouldn't fix it.
Weird that the clip on light has an LED (or halogen?) bulb, but everywhere else seems to be flame or incandescent bulbs.
The characters look like they're dressed around the 1930s-50s, maybe? Which would make it an incandescent bulb of some sort, but also entirely possible this manor is old enough to still use gas lighting.
@@SimonBuchanNz Right. The bulb for the clip on light should be incandescent, but it's far too bright and white. It should be less bright and have a yellow tint. Odd, but not game breaking.
I love this game🖤 soundtrack, atmosphere, environments, dialogue, everything is so old noir detective movies soaked with a layer of Lovecraft Cosmic Horror 🖤 Combat is tense! Funny how when the SH2 remake combat trailer was shown, we had a lynch mob saying the combat looks bad + "silent hill doesn't need combat" that now is moaning Carnby can't suplex enemies or upgrade his weapons like in RE4... People keep saying they want "old school survival horror back" but they don't want what it means 🤷🏽♂️
AITD for me is a glorious 9/10. We need more games being serious about being SURVIVAL horror.
Aw man, The namings really got out of hand here. I was thinking this was a remake of "Alone in the dark" 2008 as being born in 91, i had no idea about the OG growing up with console gaming. Now we've 3 seperate titles with the exact same title. A little subtitle would've went a long way here lol.
I wish there was a Switch port so we could see 144p
Its always seemed to me that despite the compromises some games make to have a 60fps performance mode, those modes end up looking better than quality modes because the enhanced framerate alone always makes games look better due to the smoothness. Or maybe that's simply because 30fps games tend to make me feel physically ill.
I agree
The background music kept making me think i was watching an episode of Cold Take.
This game is on my watchlist. Would love to play it
There's a CZcams Channel that recommended me this other channel, it's in Spanish though, the other channel basically was talking about false information of another YT channel called "ElanalistaDeBits" which always wants to put PS version on top of Xbox, he said they've caught him having xbox layout buttons on the "PS Version" of the video to make it look like it runs and looks better when it clearly belongs to the Xbox version, he said THIS (Digital Foundry) was a good channel for these kind of comparisons so I'm suscribing right now, and if you're reading this and you didn't know what I mentioned about the other channel, cancel your subscription like I did, of course I did my research on my own to actually find out that it was true, those graphics comparatives are fake as hell, and I have the consoles and PC to actually do the right comparison (Which I did) so... New subscriber to this channel, and sorry for my bad English, my native language is Spanish, and I don't like using translators because they tend to not exactly translate what you're trying to say, my English might not be perfect but I think it can be understood quite easily, so... Meh
09:35 PS5 wins this one and is often winning in multiplats. Analista is solid channel and I never saw him showing wrong button layouts
I think it is good that they go as low as 450p to maintain 60fps. Other games like cyberpunk can take a leave out of their book.
Wait so that’s not David Harbour and Winona Ryder in the thumbnail?
Is this game selling well? The original looked ASTONISHING at the time, but I always felt it was more of a Technical Showcase than really being a great game... I still remember standing in AWE watching the Intro Loop running on a high end PC in the EB Games store window! At the time, those 'primitive' 3D character models were just MIND BLOWING!
Although, with this remake essentially just looking like everything else released in the past few years, is the story/gameplay really good enough for anyone to bother playing it?
No. No games are really sell well, aside from a few. Highly unlikely this breaks even.
@@kaikiske7436 Think about this logically... if no games are selling well, why are so many being made?

Hogwarts and Elden Ring are the exception.
There’s a difference between “selling well” vs “making a small profit” to “losing money”

Wow, I love the inclusion of the original character models. Shame there isn't any lighting or shading applied to them. A toggle for that, and maybe also a toggle to render them at the proper resolution (they've clearly limited them to original res, or close to it). I'd love to see how they'd actually look in the environment like that. Oh well. Still cool.

I’m finding it kind of hard to believe that quality and performance the only difference is resolution. I really want to enjoy this in 60fps but I typically enjoy raytracing. But it is kind of hard to see a difference with it on or not. Unless I’m mistaken. They did a gretat job with ambient lighting to make it mimic it. I really thought the flashlight would make it noticeable but I’m still not seeing a difference.

im loving the recent survival horror resurgence
This is the third game after Lords of the Fallen and Avatar on my personal count that Xbox has traversal/rapid movement frame drops compared to PS5. Is it lower XSX's I/O SSD or something else that causes this?!
The Xbox SSD remains very fast, I don't think that is the cause of this.
All of Memory is not the same speed on Xbox
I think its api thing.
Yes its the crappy slow i/o and Noncohesive hardware, don’t listen to these xbox fanboys xbox is trash. Thats why so many regret their purchase because of all the excuses because they believed the hype which was all a lie.
I remember being blown away by the original in 1992. There was nothing like it. Way ahead of its time. My 10 year old self never finished it. I was scared to play it. I remember being utterly horrified being dragged into the depths by the creatures after death!
Reminds me of those sherlock holmes games for some reason.
All consoles need a 40FPS MODE with 120hz vrr support, Series X needs to lower from a minimum of 900p-1900p and adding FS3 will certainly help a lot, it seems that trying to maintain a higher quality than what it should causes the frames to stutter due to instability in the decision making as frames might not adapt that quickly as the engine might want,
There should also be an option to having a fix resolution at 60fps and 40something like 1280 lock resolution at 60fps
And a second option at 1600p lock at 40FPS
That would be the ideal solution for this game
Too many problems
Also the fire effects are very cheese and the enemies DONOT display any burn damages or dismemberments which should be enhanced updated, also more enemies..
Series S should just have a 40FPS option only rather than a 60fps mode, so the quality be adequate.
So it can recommend the 40FPS on series S over the 60fps version.
Loved the 40FPS mode on Plague Tale Requiem.
Oof, the resolution situation in Series S is ROUGH...

It really makes you think that developers aren't caring about the Series S at all.
A section on Steam Deck performance would hsve been sweet...
how on earth does 2160p on series X become 900p on series S? and 1440p becomes 684p?
Usually, the dividing factor of rendered pixels is around 3x, this is much more like a 5x multiplier. 1440p performance mode is what some cross gen titles aimed at, it's a very conservative, light even, target. 684p performance is in line with the most problematic image quality we've seen in the generation so far.
Wait, it’s Info “grahams”? I’ve been calling it Infogrames (sounds like games) for years
I'm not entirely sure how this UE 4.27 game, that's not really pushing visuals all that hard, needs 900p for 30 fps on Series S. That's a bit too harsh.
Series S resolution be feelin more like Nintendo Switch 💀. I Don't think this should have had a 60 FPS mode on S.
This game's a mixed bag for me. Sometimes it looks really nice, then other times it doesn't. The worst aspect of the game, however, is the lack of polish. There's an absurd amount of glitches that can break the game. I had to revert back to a prior version of the game, the 1.0 version on the disc, by installing it offline, to get past a game-breaking bug where the game would crash when I'd use the cloth on the rope in the swamp level. Another part, near the end of the game, when you defeat the second to last boss, the game kept crashing during the cutscene afterwards, so I had to skip that cutscene to get past it without crashing.
Overall, my opinion of the game was a lot higher when it started than when it ended. It seems pretty well polished at the start. The first level in the basement looks nice, the character models of the two main characters look pretty good, etc. It starts out and you think, "Wow, this seems pretty good", but the game needed some more TLC in terms of polish.
Well if you care this much about polish maybe you should play something from cdprojektred. It's the most polish studio afaik.
This game looks even better in Black and White, trust me.

I think you should decrease the size of the window of the moving average in your fps graph. The image freezes for half a second but the graph only drops from 60 to 50 fps. Or, if possible, add an algorithm that detects extreme frame time spikes and shows for this period the raw fps values. This way the graph would better represent the „feel“ of playing.
A good game this was, played it on PC though, ran quite well. I'd give it 8/10, I think most reviewers just didn't understand what the game was trying to accomplish.
These 9th gen only games are not looking a generation ahead of the PS4/XboxOne
There's diminishing returns. As the transistor approaches the size of an electron orbit of a silicone atom, you can't make standard chips any more powerful. The only way to get meaningful improvement now is to scale up the size of the processors, and maybe leverage machine learning AI to reconstruct lower resolution images (like what Nvidia is doing with their GPUs).
You aren't going to be getting generational gains anymore with a $500 machine. The only way to enjoy a generational leap in fidelity is to spend 2-3 thousand dollars on a PC.
@@BasePuma4007 just make it bigger, imagine having a console that's 2x the size of series X and with the newest tech, that alone would make the console at least 10x faster.
@@AdiiS If the chip powering it is physically twice the size, that would likely make it literally twice as expensive, or more because thermal management would become more complicated. That's what I meant in my first comment, that is part of the reason Nvidia GPUs are so expensive.

@Ty6opk yea them not doing ghostrunner 2 makes no sense since they did the first and they liked it. 2 is much better than 1 as well and they ignored it
It seems they did a decent job for the direction they went with, but honestly I wish they went against the grain and did their own thing. You can see the influence from both cinema and Resident Evil, but there’s already too many games aesthetically inspired by films that also take gameplay influence from Resident Evil. I think if they tried to evolve the original’s funky artstyle and gave an option for the old camera angles, they probably would have made a worse game but it would’ve been more interesting.
I swear the Series S should have released as a '1080p' Console - not a 1440p Console and it was 'Never' a 4k Console - so is it really 'fair' to compare the Visual Quality on a '4k' screen when it was meant to be a 1440p (or most likely used on 1080p TV's) Console anyway? Its a bit like saying 1080p games look 'soft' on Switch when docked due to TV upscale to 4k....
I do wonder if things like the Textures and whatever other 'differences' were noticed would have been noticeable if they used a 1080p TV or even a 1440p monitor instead as the Console was never SOLD as a '4k' Console in the first place.
And the series x and ps5 should have released as a 1400p console and not a 4k box.
More then enough power in these consoles. Just another unoptimized mess yet again.
Look at how pretty some of the ps3 and xbox 360 games still are...These consoles should have no problems. It's the devs that are useless. And maybe stop using that stupid UE engine.
TBF, with consoles like the Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 they also commented how a game looks on a 4k screen.

Microsoft have been buying game studios for years already. The existence of series s is to boost more xbox system sales so that more people can get into the exosystem and game library of xbox where the comlany want to earn money through subscriptions instead of through system sales.
In the old days companies build and sell systems, whoever sell the most consoles win the console war of their generation. Nowadays they create their own in-house studios or buy over third party studios and get people to be tie to their system ecosystem instead where the real money is earn from subscriptions instead.
Both sony and xbox have their hearts on doing subscriptions rather than on simoly building you a good singular machine for you to simoly play games on it for quite a while already. Some can see it while others still cant. Thats why people say the last great good gaming era was at ps3 and xbox 360 era. The gaming industry and focus have shifted already.
