    The reason for the downfall of this organisation is religion, politics and neglect. The silent Sisterhood was and is still officially the witchfinder department under the overall structure of the Adeptus Astro-Telepathica. This is the Imperiums Psyker department responsible for all Astropaths and the training of sanctioned Psykers. This is a highlord level powerful Adeptus. They also worked directly with the Custodian Guard, but that was never officially constituted in the Lex Imperial.
    When Big E "died" and the loyal primarchs dissappeared, these women only really had the Astro-Telepathica and the Custodian Guard speaking up for them politically. But as soulless, they are really!!! disliked by the Imperial Church. So with such a powerful enemy, and their allies failing them hard, their Citadel on the Moon; The Somnus Citadel was raided and destroyed, the organisation disbanded and its members either burned at the stake or fleed or in some rare cases retained as guards on the Black Ships by the Astro-Telepathica.
    The current Captain General of the Custodian Guard began recalling them before the Fall of Cadia and Guilleman reformed them promptly, when he arrived on Terra (turns out they are the best anti-Demon weapons in mankinds fucking arsenal, who knew?)
    Their Citadel is being restored, they have a new Sisters Commander and they don't want to obey the Head of the Astro-Telepathica at all! With Guilleman and Trajan Valoris backing them, they are in a solid political position again.

    The Custodes we're in depression for 10,000 years. They didn't come to the aid of anyone not just the sisters of silence. They put all and only efforts to the protection of the Emperor.
    The sisters should not have sat back and waited for someone else to uphold their place and necessity, but made it known and fought for it.
    The problem with the sisters, it's difficult to fight for them and stand up for them when their very presence makes you sick and nauseous

      Still, they could have appointed a non-blank to speak on their behalf, perhaps the inquisitor general of the ordo maleus or something. He understands the necessity of having weapons against daemons due to having a fought daemons and such.
      The imperium is quite retarded though.
      The Tau should snatch up the sister of silence allegiance. That would be a cool plot point. The greater good would have a place for the sisters.
      I hate the Tau but that would be fun.

    Simply put, the Sisters of Silence are pariahs. The lore makes it plain how uncomfortable people are around them. I can easily see the High Lords thinking their usefulness was at an end, so the need to tolerate them was too.
    As to the Captain-General being a High Lord. It’s been made plain that they typically stay out of politics unless the Imperial household is involved. Or maybe he got voted down by the other High Lords.
    Now, my question was always why weren’t they folded into Malcador’s nascent Inquisition? I’m guessing it had to do with the fact that Malcador was dead & other, less pragmatic individuals, took up the leadership of that organization.

    • @julejule7

      and you are right, the Eisenhorn and Dark Imperium novels make it clear just what an effect the pariahs have on mortals. There is no stigma that compares to the visceral disgust they impart on mortals; its barely tolerable by those who are seriously invested in tolerating it (Eisenhorn’s survival + love), let alone a bureaucracy. @Michal Nemet No way, the Custodes are outright feared by the High Lords. From my reading, when the Custodes deign to voice their opinion to other mere mortal High Lords, they get what they want. Period. They probably just stayed out of it. The Sisters were loyal, valuable soldiers, but the Custodes have turned a blind eye to many, MANY such soldiers being screwed over unfairly.
      I don't really get the hate towards Guilliman. He's actually a grounded, pretty reasonable Primarch. I find him the most relatable Primarch. He seems to genuinely care for ordinary humans, a trait only a few of his brothers actually shared.

  • @metaljugger

    Strictly speaking, the SoS do still oversee the Black Ships and so contribute to one of the sadder bits of 40k lore, namely that thousands of psykers must be sacrificed every day to keep the Emperor alive. The Custodes may be a skeleton's golden bodyguards, but the sister are his literal life support at this point. Neither are particularly happy with the situation as is and neither are interested in helping a parody of their master's vision for humanity. The Custodes were just as sidelined, and it was largely voluntary.
    Still I would like to see more SoS models now that the Custodes have gotten love. (Additionally: It important to note that while the custodes are certainly used to SoS's blank influence nibbling at their edges of their souls most everyone else would much rather not be in the presence of a group of quiet weirdos' who creepily stare at people while lurking about the dark corners of the room.)

      @metaljugger Před 2 lety +1

      @Michal Nemet The emperor spoke to Guilliman upon his return and to Alicia Dominica (the leader of the proto-sisters-of-battle) during age of apostasy. The fight with Horus left the Emperor mortally wounded, but he didn't outright die thanks to the diligence of his talons. His fractured soul is yet still loosely grounded to the material realm by his skeleton.
      The dark Imperium books have pretty much confirmed, the emperor is still alive although a shadow of his former self or perhaps he just can't hide his true self anymore.

Even Rogal Dorn and Constatine Valdor did not feel at ease with Jenetia Krole being in the same room with them. While I can see Guilliman or Dorn being able to tolerate them and understanding their necessity, I can also see most of the other High Lords of Terra and a couple of the Primarchs simply not realizing their importance and dismissing them from Imperial Service.

The thunder warriors were intentionally built to fail after unification like electronics that break right after their warranty runs out. Since they were made from grown men they could think for themselves and turn on him once they realized what he'd done to them, so he built tools that were incapable of doing either to get rid of them, and tools that were cheaper to replace them.

    I always felt bad for the pariahs of the imperium treated as the personification of the witch trials because there not as special as the untouchables nore as valuable as the perpetuals and make everyone who has brushed with the warp feel uncomfortable ( the Astro telepathica don’t like them because they are way too close to the warp )

    Reflecting on the grand scheme of the lore there is a mistake on the writing of it, because the Emporium secretly needs the Sister of Silence to man the hundreds of Black Ships to collect the thousands of unsanctioned psychers to be sacrificed on the golden throne to keep the Emperor alive and also to maintain a reserve stock of unsanctioned psychers in the Imperial Palace dungeons incase the supply dangerously runs out or warp storms cause a supply chain issue. I imagined that there are hundreds of black ships thousands of Sisters of Silence members traveling to the million worlds of the Emporium to hunt, collect, then transport 365,000 unsanctioned psychers every year to the golden throne.
    The lore situation doesn’t make sense. Without the Sisters of Silence the Emperor will die, and Custodies would not allow that to happen.

    • @iamcaesar6741
      @iamcaesar6741 Před 2 lety

      @Michal Nemet auto correct causes that typo.
      That’s the nature of observation with the watchers of the throne novel. Let’s say 2 squads minimum to guard a Black Ship. How many Black Ships are there to supply unsanctioned psychers to Terra for the Golden Throne? How long does the process take for one ship to collect 1000 unsanctioned psychers and bring them to Terra then bring those 1000 psychers to the Golden Throne to be sacrificed to the Emperor? Described in the novel the Master of Mankind, you will need like a 100 ships or even more if you a ‘grim dark’ narrative was to be written.
      I am still confused on how the Custodes allowed the High Lords of Terra to ignore and reduce the Sisters of Silence’s maintenance and security as described in novel Watchers of the Throne.

    Unfortunately for blanks, their very existence brings a lot of unease and disgust to people. Given the general lack of foresight (and incompetence) of the high lords and disappearance of the primarchs, it isn't too surprising they would be cast aside.
