As a New York motorcyclist for 50 years, I have explored most of the State. Your choices are pretty good. There are so many tiny gems... Millbrook, New Paltz, Deposit, Middleburgh, Cohoes, New Lebanon... and that's just the bottom east! I love the geogrpahy of NY State.. the politics can go to hell... But!

I live in Pearl River, and have been to Tarrytown, Cooperstown, Greenport, and Lake Placid. There are so many beautiful places in New York State, it's a shame the only thing people think of is NYC or Niagara Falls. A short drive from New York City will put you in the middle of some beautiful natural countryside.

As someone from the Finger Lakes, I'd say these are good choices. I would add Hammondsport, at the foot of Keuka Lake, and East Aurora near Buffalo. And I'd say Geneva (north end of Seneca Lake) and Canandaigua (north end of the lake of the same name) and Geneseo... but probably those towns don't qualify as "villages" by your definition.

We have a big Italian population in all NY towns and amazing pizza abounds everywhere. And ice cream is so ingrained in my soul that I can't wait for spring/summer to arrive when they open again. Ever been to Ithaca? We have state parks, loads of beautiful waterfalls, gorges, many types of dining, Cornell University, Cayuga Lake, farmer's market, science museum/center, Stewart Park right on the lake, there are wine tours in nearby wineries, Ithaca College and much more. Many students who come here for their secondary education, end up staying because they fall in love with Ithaca. Don't let me forget the downtown shopping area "The Commons", with a good sized parking garage very close to the shopping as well as just about any type of food one could wish for. The town of Ithaca is nestled down in a valley surrounded by rolling hills with beautiful wide open countryside beyond those hills, but still close to get to and easy to find. People who like to fish enjoy our lakes, rivers, streams, water falls, gorges, shallow creeks and ponds. Water recreation in summer, along with many great places to hike and camp. Our parks with playgrounds for the kiddies and loads of space to run and play make it clear that we are family oriented. Cornell is a picturesque campus with lovely old stone buildings, more to explore and we have our share of bar and grill set ups, sports bars, but not too many. Also for those who like to go exploring, there are sweet little towns dotted around the countryside, like little treasures tucked away with antiques, craft stores, second hand shops, bake shops, and quaint mom n pop country stores. We can also boast about a sweet little town called Freeville, the only place in the world with that moniker. Fear not there are more than a few places to stay with price ranges for the frugal or well to do. Don't forget a fruit NY state is famous for: Apples! In the fall we celebrate the apple with apple cider, apple pies, cakes and nearly anything apple can be found in and around Ithaca. Be sure to sample our lovely local wines and take a tour of the wineries of which there are several. I could ramble on and on about Tompkins county because I love it here. I moved away when I was in my 20's lived in the south and in the west, visited many other states which were all nice, but there was just no place like New York state, especially Ithaca and the whimsical little villages and towns all around! Come check us out, sometime. I've chosen this area to retire, living out in the countryside and I love it! (I know I have left a lot out, but then again, I could write a book about our wonderful state. If you enjoy winter activities, we have those, too. The only place I am not fond of only because it's a huge city, is NYC, it is just not my cup of cider.)

We all have our own preferences... I'm very glad to hear that My hometown took the Silver on your list. There's a lot of great scenery in Cooperstown. Council Rock park in the village and Three Mile park on the west side of the lake are by far the best parks in My opinion as they're small and you can really take in the tranquility and peacefulness of your surroundings...
I do recommend when visiting you enjoy some apple cider and other good New York products at the nearby Fly Creek Cider Mill. Also, I strongly recommend trying New York's own Byrne Dairy chocolate milk. Available in most grocery stores in the area. Best chocolate milk I have ever had.
That being said, be very wary if you are thinking about moving to New York. Everything they say about the bitter cold winters, the horrible snow and the frequent blizzards are absolutely true. It is one of the many, many reasons that I left New York.

10 is supposedly named for Pennsylvania Yankee Penn Yan. I love the Finger Lakes region, Im from Elmira just below Watkins Glen.
    8 is pronounced Skinny-At-Las.
5 If ya coming north on NNY14 from Horseheads and you want to avoid the mess thru town where 414 comes into town, turn right right before the TOPS plaza and turn left behind it, follow that st till the light and turn right to go north on 414/Walmart or go one more block past the light and turn left to meet 14 again above the 14/414 red light. I was born and raised in Elmira so I know the short cuts. Watkins Glen International is in the town of Dix NY at the top of the hill, orig the track was a 6mile road course. Oct 1947 was the 1st Post WWII race in America, "The Day They Stopped The Trains."
If you go to the park, go to the South Entrance, where the Pool is. Its easier to get in and out from that entrance, you only miss one waterfall from that entrance and its an easy walk to get to and continue up the gorge.
1 Owego was a rr town serviced by the Erie (NS active line), Lehigh Valley and DLW (Lackwanna), The DLW & Erie merged to create the EL in the 50s. The DLW line from Owego to Ithaca was the oldest part of the whole DLW system at one time. The DLW old bridge supports can be seen when the river waters are low, Their station and tracks were located where the Owego exit is on Rt17/I86. NYS bought a lot of the old DLW line to build the hwy RT17. The old bridge crossed just west of the road bridge over the hwy and river. Tioga County courthouse in downtown is uniquely placed in its own block. I dont think Ive seen that anywhere else in my travels. I love the antique shop and restaurants nearby that make Chicken Spedies (a must try). Ive seen the Southern Tier region from Bath/Corning to Binghamton in the snow, nothing much unless its a heavy snowfall lol.
