      I purchased this lens after using a Canon 100-400mm for years, and I was blown away at the results in post! It’s so much fun to use, yes it’s heavier, but I’m getting use to it. I paired it on a Canon 7d2, with battery grip….so I’m sporting about 6 pounds, but I’ve decided the results outweigh the weight! Pun intended!

    Nice review !
    I myself just got the Sony A7R III and the Sigma 100-400(I kept my G9 as a back up for now).
    It's a really nice lens but I still have to get used to it since it's my first real telephoto lens. I'm hoping I'll be able to get some nice wildlife shots in the near future but for now I'm stuck at home...
    I didn't realize how hard wildlife photo was until I got this lens ! So much harder to get a sharp image(I think I still struggle mentally to crank up my ISO that much, coming from a G9 haha). I'm also probably pixel peeping too much 😅

But with that Sony definitely don't be afraid of that ISO, I know for me it was a weird transition too coming from MFT to FF haha but you're Sony can definitely handle it.

I got into wildlife photography when I first started 5 years ago but when I stopped using bridge cameras and started using DLSR I couldn’t afford it. Luckily Amazon offered it at a monthly payment over 12 months ( I could buy it outright but prefer to pay monthly with no interest ).

    Thanks for the review, as prime lenses are awfully expensive these days :). I've been using this lens for wildlife for about 18 months; like you, I've been happy with the results. I use a mix of auto-focus and manual focus, with manual necessary in low light. But on a sunny day, the auto-focus works well. I shoot on a crop sensor body (M6 II). With a 32 megapixel sensor and an effective reach of 960 mm, there's room to crop, and I've felt no need for a teleconverter. I've had no problems with edge effects, perhaps because only the centre of the lenses is seen by the crop sensor?
    Although I bought the M6 II mostly for video work, it's turned out to be surprisingly useful for birds, and I think I can comfortably recommend it. For larger birds or hand-held applications, I also use a 100-400 mm zoom (Tamron 4.5-6.3 VC).
    Thanks again.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 2 lety +1

      That’s great! Glad you’ve been enjoying it ☺️ Sigma is known to build good corner sharpness in their lenses so what you’re seeing is true! And 960mm is plenty enough I agree, probably even more than needed in some scenarios haha

I shoot wildlife and not much else so just wondered if you had the choice (and the money) what one of these you would get? • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks Kelly! Personally, if the price were the same, I would choose the Sigma 150-600 still unless amazing AF is super important to you, then I would maybe purchase the Canon RF 100-500 instead. However, since the prices are drastically different, I think it's a pretty big no brainer to get the Sigma but that's my personal opinion! Canon overprices everything (especially their lenses), and consumers often pay double the actual value. Choosing a third-party brand like Sigma which has a proven track record of great quality will be much more worth the money! Personally, Sigma is my favorite lens brand and I own 3 of their lenses, 2 Canon lenses, and 5 Lumix lenses.

    Hey Jeremy, thanks for the great review! I just purchased a Sigma 100-400 with a native L-mount but now that I've seen your enthusiasm, I think I'll also get this one and send the other one back. Have you tried it with autofocus on your Lumix S-body (via the MC-21 adapter)? I have an S1H and want to use the lens for stills and video and was wondering if autofocus is any worth. I'm a manual focus shooter mainly but since I'm just getting into wildlife photography, I'm wondering how one manages that without mega fast autofocus. Any tips and comments are much appreciated!

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Ivan! I have and my Panasonic S1R with the Sigma 150-600mm is actually my main wildlife photography setup now. In all honesty, with the adaptation that I use between the two with the MC-21, the autofocus is still slow. However, if you are already used to manual focusing, I would say just put in the little bit extra work to learn it in wildlife photography as well and you should be golden. I only shoot manual focus with my Sigma 150-600mm, and because of that, I think undeniably this lens is the best bang for you buck, but the AF is the only part that doesn't hold up to the standard. I think if you got the Sigma 150-600mm and went out in the field practicing MF you'd probably get it down pretty quick if you are already used to it. If you decide to go for it let me know!

I have not taken any people specific shot yet, however did go to a bird of prey centre, where they were doing some flying displays, and I found that the eye focus was very quick on human faces compared to birds.
      I have not used the RF 100-500mm lens, but have read on forums that the focus on the Canon lens is slightly quicker, however here in the UK the cost is almost 4 times the price of the Sigma, so I'd be disappointed if it wasn't better.

I am after a longer focal length. I was wondering how it would fair with the Metabones Smart T adapter. No gain in f stop but you keep the full 600 mm. • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 3 lety

      So the Sigma 150-600 with the speed booster adapted goes down to a 4.0 f-stop, so it gets lower light then your Leica 100-400mm which I why I recommended it that way... however, doing the smart adapter wouldn’t be a bad option at all either! Personally, since MFT struggles a little more with low light I like the idea of getting two extra stops of light but that’s my opinion. I would say however, that if you keep the full 600mm focal distance, I wouldn’t get the teleconverter cause you are losing just too much light at that point. For the MFT line, you start to really limit your low light capabilities once you’re over that f/8 line in my opinion.

    Interesting that you are fine with the focus ring, i think its much too stiff and too small.
    I am used to the RF 800 F11 and EF 100-400 II focus rings, these are GREAT and big with nice grip, the Sigma is horrendous to manual focus, also much too sensible to nail focus good enough.
    I am also wondering how you can see this wobbly clip as "good stabilized", coming from RF 800 F11 i was used to very good stabilizer already with IBIS, even the adapted EF 100-400 glass is MUCH BETTER STABILIZED than the adapted sigma. At least on the R7 the stabilizer is bad and i really have to rely on a tripod with this lens (but the optical stabilizer compensate the rest of the wobble and movement very good on a lightweight/crappy tripod at least, but unusable for video handheld in my opinion, probably 120fps+ slow mo is usable but thats it)

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Před rokem

      but despite the heavy downsides for handheld video and the "bad" focus ring, its also my favorite widllife lens, too versatile on APS-C with its 240-960mm at Canon bodies.
      The 100-400 II 5.6 is often too short, even on APS-C, but a lot better for macro (0,9m MFD vs 2,5m), lighter, very nice stabilized (nearly or at panasonic level) and the 100mm on the short end are especially a charme on full frame.
      But the 150-600mm are a pretty much unbeatable focal lenght range, only the 60-600 is better but lets be honest, that is again about 2x the weight of the 150-600, just NO (beside the high price)
      Funny thing is... basically ONLY Sigma lenses were the best value for its money in my collection, the 150-600 is absolutely no exception, probably even the best value sigma lens beside some smaller macro primes.

    I'm brand new to cameras and photography so please forgive my newb question. I have the Lumix G9 and want to understand how to know which different makers lenses will be compatible with the G9. Will ANY micro four thirds lenses from ANY company fit on it or do you have to buy specific adapters to make them fit?

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Martin! No worries! Yes any micro-four thirds lens will fit and work... however depending on the brand and comparability autofocus and image stabilization may or may not be compatible. For the G9, look for Panasonic LUMIX built MFT lenses and you will definitely be safe. But any MFT lens out there will at least work on your G9 to get an image.

      @@JeremyNeipp thank you for the quick response! I bought the Leica 12-60mm lens kit when I bought it and also the 25mm f 1.7 and the 100-300mm panasonic lens. Figured that would be a good start and I'm very happy with them, especially the 25mm 1.7 which might be my favorite one, great deal for $149. The 100-300mm is decent, but I'll probably get a longer one at some point so that was why I asked the question because it was kind of confusing wondering about different brands working with the G9.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  Před 3 lety

      In my opinion it’s not unless you really need it! You’re paying double the price compared to the contemporary lens, in terms of Image Quality, it’s a very slight upgrade, and the only other big change is the weather sealing... personally, I’ve taken my contemporary version out in the rain multiple times and it’s always been okay, however, it’s never been heavy rain. So don’t take my word on it, that’s just my experience
