  • Our latest student lecture features the first lecture in the second term (1st Year) introductory course on Linear Algebra from leading Oxford Mathematician James Maynard.
We are making these lectures available to give an insight in to the student experience and how we teach. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
You can also watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Oxford Mathematics Stu...

@@o_sch you do realize linear algebra is not algebra 1, or algebra 2, for that matter? It is an algebra that is introduced at the very least at the college level, and it is higher upper in the mathematics world than calculus. This time 45 years ago I was a maths student, and lectures were delivered in this way, but with blackboards. Nowadays, it's difficult to understand why the lecture material is not posted online, thus leaving the lecturer free to give explanations where necessary and to do problems. Most students can't listen, write and learn at the same time. Lecture time is time wasted that could be more valuably spent actually learning.

I thought Oxford was a good school but just watching this video is giving me PTSD from my school days. Watch any video from Prof Gilbert strang, you will love maths. But this is the kind of teaching which every generic teacher in every part of the world would teach. I really love maths but this lecture is questioning my love. My god, couldn't bear watching even the first 10min.

Sabino Rodriguez Actually I thought about it and a more plausible explanation is, on the back of each board theres a strip (probably on the bottom) of eraser material that wipes the board clean. I highly doubt the University (full of intellegent individuals) would hire someone to perform such a mundane task. But that's just my opinion, I could very well be wrong.

They only know topics and discuss it with a class that is barely introduced to the topic resulting in nothing but waste of time. During discussion, the teacher provides no new input and students can not either. This also does not change. The top scorers study by themselves thus giving the teacher an incorrect impression. Its crazy what I have seen.
