Life goes by slowly in the Texas suburbs, and Conan Gray captured the doldrums of his high school senior year in his first Indie song, "Idle Town." When the video hit his CZcams channel, it resonated deeply; after two and a half years, it's closing in on 15M views. The craft and catchiness of Gray’s music is central to his broad skill set. Gray said that once he began writing songs and sharing them with the world, he just wanted to do it more and more. After connecting with an LA producer and refining that craft, "Generation Why" and "Crush Culture" solidified a sturdy career path. Long story short? Conan Gray is going places. While enjoying a parade of positive press, he's opened for Panic! At the Disco and made a splash at the UK’s The Great Escape festival. The videos for "Maniac" and "Comfort Crowd" also prove Gray isn’t shy in front of a camera - flaunting a natural charisma is his strong suit. He performed both of those tracks in our Brooklyn studio, and fans are gonna love 'em.

RAHEEM it sounds like a vocalizer to me... which quantizes the pitch to the nearest note (keeps it perfectly in tune. it’s very noticeable here because it’s pretty inhuman to hit every note in perfect western tuning as he does here). his voice is certainly pitch-corrected here, but I wouldn’t call it auto-tuning as that is done in post.

Leaf McLeod it’s not autotuned. He’s singing over a backtrack. Autotune is much harder to hear than people think, especially these days. Chances are if you can hear autotune in a song it’s for artistic effect, not to cover up bad singing. (Or the singer is REALLY bad, which obviously isn’t the case with Conan)
Fran Sheffield to me is sounds like a vocalizer, where the pitch is quantized to the nearest note (keeps it perfectly in tune. he hits every note here in perfect western tuning, which is nearly inhuman and is thus very noticeable here). I don’t think it’s auto-tuned as that is used for refining pitch in post, but yeah his voice is certainly pitch-corrected here.
I believe if he were singing without a vocalizer effect, then the dissonance of his voice would be much more prominent because there are so many tuned backing tracks.
avuhhh agreed. There’s definitely some weird effect on his voice that makes it sound (slightly) robotic. But not in the same way autotune does.
