wow, i never would have thought to "analyze" mk races like a game of chess or an FPS but this was actually super insightful. for new players to the game especially, something like this could be invaluable as a series. fantastic video man

I remember the old JPG analysis with the old mic and when you only had a few thousand subs, the jump in quality is insane, keep it up

Thanks for the info! I'm a pretty ill-tempered gamer and a *pro* at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online. I've came in 1st at least twenty times, and in the top 3 very commonly (4th-6th are highly unlikely and I only got 7th in one race). There were a lot of tips I was unaware of and this really helped me. Also I can never perform the Mushroom Gorge gap jump.
I'll tell you some things about me. I used to use combos such as Wario Biddybuggy, and for some reason a SpongeBob mii, however now that I discovered the Dry Bones + Biddybuggy combo, it's been working brilliantly and I've never used any combos since (I've achieved more 1st places than any other combo). The extreme acceleration and handling really pay off, and are great for making stunning comebacks in fairly low positions. I always race on global online, since for some reason regional players have extremely high scores (which I believe is a cheat code) and it's actually a lot less competitive (Waluigi Wigglers and other meta combos are less common). My only 2 1st place streaks are 4.
So, I'm more on the casual side. I don't really use any meta strategies or kart combos, and I don't play tournaments such as Lounge, so I'll tell you about some of my victories.
(Also I used to use smart steering, however now I don't)
GBA Sky Garden:
I was never really fond of this track until I played it. So, you see, I was pretty low in the pack at the start (happens at the start of most races even if in 1st) and me running into a triple green shell didn't help. So, I boosted with my mushrooms, red shelled, and green sniped my way to 1st place, which I was in for a solid 2 laps. I actually didn't get hit by anything during the race (no red shells, no shocks, no blue shells) until the third lap. You see, I had a green shell that was stolen, so my only item was a coin. I used it straight away and on the glider section just near the finish, I saw a red AND blue shell coming for me. My heart dropped and I closed my eyes because I was dead sure that second place (which wasn't *too* far behind) would overtake me. Thankfully the red shell hit me right after the glider so I was invulnerable to the blue shell. I opened my eyes after I heard the 1st place victory theme (I was kind of like Npesta after beating a hard Geometry Dash level) and I was so happy. The second place player didn't go past me until after I crossed the finish.
This was one of my first victories, and it's the one I'm most proud of. In fact, now consider Sky Garden a great track and I choose it everytime it shows up. (I won 1st place again lol)
Wii Maple Treeway:
So, Maple Treeway is my favorite Mario Kart track of all time. I've played it so many times that I've only played 3DS Rainbow Road, my second favorite track, more. I had insane luck on this track. I got first almost at the start of the race (only 2 people overtook me because I had also won first on the last race) and I destroyed everybody. I barely even got hit. It was one of the easiest online races you'd ever see.
Wii Mushroom Gorge:
I actually got 1st place twice on this track, but it's the first time that I'm most proud of. So, the first and second laps were nothing special, but the third lap proved to be extraordinary (Fun fact: No one attempted the gap jump). You see, I pulled a star right before a shock and recieved 4 red shells (one triple and two single) and I threw them ALL at the person in front. And I zoomed right past the finish line just before they reached it. (I like to think how much they raged about it)

I've taken two months off because I didnt have money to renew and now everyone is WAY better and it's rare I can make it to 5th place even. It seems it's gotten more chaotic since I've been gone but my VR has taken a massive hit.

3:45 the one thing that makes me question the item distribution in this game:
Why is more easy to get a bomb than a superhorn in 1st place?
100% agree and wish they would remove this, let first get like triple nanners instead. Can trap and block multiple reds with it like a bomb but it isn’t nearly as unavoidable or damaging as a back bomb can be.

@@MrOz1705 Triple nanas are tough to utilize fully.
Against reds you need to drop them back or the red can slip through the rotating ones, but reds rarely run into back dropped items on turns, so this is only consistent on straight sections (vs holding defense which is nearly always consistent). So against reds it is unlikely you will actually be able to block 3 reds if 2nd takes advantage of this.
For trapping/hitting 2nd, triple nanners are WAY more forgiving then bombs, even if 3 backed bananas are tough to avoid and you hit them they slow you down less then bombs which detonate if you come near them and are often unavoidable if backed correctly.
Lastly triple nanas would force 1st to think if they used 1, do you keep holding the 2? That's still 2 potential defense / backspam, but if a blue is thrown they'd all disappear (no holding trips in hand to stop blue from killing them).
Sorry for the essay lol, I'm not trying to respond aggressively. This is just something I've thought about a lot and I personally think trip nanners in 1st would be less op AND provide more interesting gameplay choices for 1st.
This is also under my assumption that if 1st lost an item I feel like they should gain an item.
