  • I tour the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the work of blacksmiths Samuel Yellin and Hyman Blum. Tour includes streets of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Courthouse and the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. Samuel Yellin’s work dominates the tour. This is a celebration of the craft of architectural blacksmithing.

Samuel Yellin's business did the work, Samuel Yellin designed, made samples and oversaw the work, but he had many talented smiths who worked with him. I have been fortunate to meet his late son Harvey and his daughter, Claire and got to see the shop in Philadelphia where the work was done years ago before it was vandalized and ruined in 1998. For some of his jobs he had 200 people working in his shop. I got to have breakfast with one of his talented smiths, Max Segal in 1974 and learned some valuable things from him. Cyril Colnik's work in Milwaukee is stunning as well as work by other masters in North America and the rest of the world, both old and new work. His business still survives and does some new work and maintains and restores some of their older work through some of the very talented smiths we have today.

I’d guess the tunnel gates on the Allegheny county courthouse are original to the building designed in to 1883 by HH Richardson. They have the hallmarks of a Richardson design muscular and Norman gothic, so probably not Yellin.

Thanks for that!!! I can't begin to fathom being able to do all that work, and then get it installed. Beyond amazing!
Just wondering; is there any information about the work for visitors to learn about Yellin?
