How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking | Henri Arslanian | TEDxWanChai

  • While FinTech is revolutionizing the banking industry and giving millions of people access to financial services for the first time, new banking models are emerging with FinTech start-ups and tech firms potentially disrupting the status quo. But business schools and universities are not preparing future bankers for these changes, says FinTech thought leader Henri Arslanian. How can designers, programmers and creative thinkers help?
    Henri Arslanian started his career as a financial markets and funds lawyer in Canada and Hong Kong, after which he spent many years with UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong. In recent years, he has been teaching graduate courses on Entrepreneurship in Finance at Hong Kong University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, and currently leads the first FinTech course in Asia. His latest book on Entrepreneurship in Finance will be published in late 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan. A member of the Milken Institute’s Young Leaders Circle, Henri is a regular keynote speaker globally on the topic of FinTech and hedge funds and currently sits on a number of finance, academic, civil society and FinTech related boards and advisory boards. Henri is fluent in English, French, Armenian, Spanish and conversational in Mandarin Chinese and has been awarded many academic and industry awards over the years, including the Governor General of Canada Gold Medal for Academic Excellence.

    The so called traditional banks are not going anywhere anytime soon. Fintech cannot survive on its own, remember the biggest investors in fintech are traditional banks. The future of technology is the mutual eco-existence of traditional banking and fintech as two designs that compliment each other.

    • @dosendaring
      @dosendaring Před 2 lety +1

      Ian Muriithi, well yes and no. Traditional banks will not go anywhere anytime soon, that's true. But it's still facing serious challenge. For start, number of banks will be reduced. Number of branch will be reduced significantly (and this one already happening, at faster rate, thanks to pandemic). Even without pandemic, nobody goes to the branch anymore, I know I don't.
      Banks already co-exist with fintech since early 2000s (back then, they called them 'vendors').
      I've been a banker for 13 years, and in IT industry for 8 years now. When I was in banking, I used to involved in lots of project, from setting a website, data warehouse, setting up trade finance system, core banking upgrade, setting up ecommerce, setting up payment gateway. All of them were involving third parties.
      These little 'fintech' (vendors) are the one that will (and has always been) co-exist and complementing bank. But the bigger one like Ant Finance, Transferwise, Kabbage and Neobanks, that's another story. Currently they work within (or using) banking system. But at a significantly lower fee and faster processing time (compared to traditional bank), not to mention better user experience overall. Lower fee and fast, everybody loves that. Better user experience? This is what millenials crave..... and they are the biggest portion of population right now. Once the consumer tastes the better option, they don't see the reason to going back using traditional banking service (expensive and slow).
      Yes, banking system will not go anytime soon, that I can be sure of, knowing that financial authority (in every country) will do everything they can to protect banking system, because there's a systemic risk if the banks are collapsing. But the number of banks and/or the number of branch will be reduced significantly.....

Whatever people studied and skill acquired now became redundant and obsolete and there is now no difference between a fresher and an expert. This is most stressful condition for aged one because their learning and experience has no more value......Now we are heading toward a world which is not human friendly.....Technology must be complementary to human beings and not in competition with human beings...... I afraid There will be war between human being and Technology in the future if it does not include human being into it................ Think on it.....

We will not see an abrupt change. But in the span of several years, how we do banking and financing will change so much. Compared to 10 years ago, we already do banking rather differently. But we didn't have machine learning and large numbers of smartphone users back then. Now we do have that. We have the right tools and infrastructure to change banking. It's only inevitable.
