I just got my grand am 2003 for 950$ and it's running great Im totally in love with the car, I replaced the battery for a brandnew battery and now im looking for other stuff to work on since its my first car. So thank you for this!
Also my only problem with this car so far is that it needs a wheel alignment and a new sway bar apparently because it does steer to the right slightly.

N body’s are awesome and before thinking about the sway sway bar I’d replace all the end links and bushings like ball joints ..ect, possibly wheel bearing and new tires and alignment first 👍🏼 these cars are pretty old now most of the rubber and tubes are way past the life span 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is a great video! It’s full of truth and only useful information! No plugs, no tangents, realistic situations with core charges and refunds. This guy needs a TV show! My first car was a 1970 Z/28 I got for $500 in a junkyard in 1982 and what you got for $500 at a junkyard in 1982 was what you get now for $500! Restoring her I learned lessons such as on the brakes the 67 - 68 Pontiac Firebird’s and Camaro’s had 4 piston caliper disc brakes I could swop out, straight bolt on! In 1982 there were plenty of those in the junkyard to raid! Gratiot Auto had cheap rebuild kits so I was all set! I also had a $10 security system! I went to a military surplus store and got a big switch with a lever and an extra battery cable. I took the positive cable from the battery and bolted it to this switch which was mounted under my seat. I took the other cable and bolted it to the switch and ran it to the starter. Whenever I stopped I’d flip the switch and open the circuit. The could steal the radio and tow the car but unless they knew that switch was there they weren’t hot wiring it!

Just out to share what we find and have some fun with it! Funny thing, the black Camaro in our group had a starter inhibitor switch under the dash at one time! Same thing, just all the electronics came one starter wouldn't engage tho!

I actually like these cars they are also easy to work on, i currently own 3 of them one SE and two GT's(all V6) one of my GT's has rust issues so its a parts car Im putting the GT trim on to my SE and im in the process of swapping any parts I need from it to my other two. I also like rebuilding the 3400 its actually a good engine once you replace all the crappy gaskets GM used on it, if you get a grand am first thing you should do is replace the lower intake gaskets with metals one's because the plastic gaskets regardless of brand always fail.

    • @rwfrench66GenX
      @rwfrench66GenX Před 3 lety

I had a 94 Grand Am I bought used and the previous owner had a heater core problem but instead of replacing the heater core he bypassed the heater hose. Well, that added extra pressure in the coolant system and the plastic sides of the radiator started to leak and replacing radiators without fixing the heater core was pointless, and I was starting to have electrical issues and with the mileage it was time to either do a full build or cut my losses and at the time I cut my losses. I always wondered what would've happened if I had done a full build on that one though! The sound system in that car was incredible, and the orange tint of the dash at night reminded me of the monochrome screens on the 80's DOS computers. Personally, I think GM should bring back Pontiac to start selling Fieros with Turbo V-6's, Trans Am's, and a RWD GTO to compete with the Challengers you see all over the place! GM could use the GTO platform to bring back the Chevelle SS and that would force Ford to bring back the Torino Cobrajet! Buick could start building the GNX and Chevy could use that platform to bring back the Monte Carlo SS. I think the El Camino would do well too. The thing is, they have electric power steering now, lets just make bigger alternators and make electric heaters so people don't have to tear apart a dash and replace heater cores! If we can add 17 batteries for a stereo we can add another for a heater if it saves consumers $2,000 when fuses are cheap!

If anyone has a grand am and is rebuilding the 3400 I made a list of things you should do.
    1. Metal lower intake gaskets (plastic ones always fail and restrict air, metal upgrade gaskets match the port better for better throttle response and never fail)
    2. Timing set from a 1999 grand am 3400, for some reason in 2000 GM went from a thicker heavy duty timing chain to a thinner chain. Haven't had one fail on me yet but why take a chance.
    3. Silicone the pump drive gear that shit always leaks dont just rely on the oring.
    4. Drill two or three .076 holes in the thermostat, its just something I do to help keep air out when I purge the system its not necessary.
    5. Felpro gaskets! Ebay head gaskets are a gamble they are mostly good but you have a few bad ones out there.
    6. This isn't necessary but if your planning to tune and add a bigger throttle body get cylinder heads and lower intake from a LX9 engine, they came in the 04-05 chevy malibu and will have either an 04 or 05 embossed on the intake. You can swap the whole lx9 but its more involved and you need a crank trigger( they're getting harder to find).
    7. Swap in a brand new cam or a used one from a 2000 and up, GM had a bad batch and even though its rare I did have one snap it two on me destroying my block.
    8. This is obvious but new bearings especially cam bearings(people dont like replacing them for some reason)
Oh and brush youre teeth 😁

Nice! I've got videos on a 3.5 top swap it's a nice upgrade. Timing is an excellent note. I've seen a few 00+ snap. Both our motors have double rollers 😁. Not without tons of fabrication. And then it sticks above the hood. There's a couple people working on making the whole 3.8 able to swap in, which is still a lot of work but more efficient then trying to make the supercharger work. Your better off making a turbo kit like mine honestly, thatd be easier.

As the owner of a '98 grand am gt (with the 3.1l v6, smaller bore but basically the same engine), I'd like to turn it into a stock hellcat competitor (it's more or less going to take lots of time and money. Also, I love the hellcat, just cant afford one :)). Im thinking compound turbo with forged internals and the transmission beefed up to handle all that power (if possible). That said, do you have a exhaust muffler in mind that you'd put on yours? And have you disabled the anti-theft system? It's the only major issue I've had for the past couple of years with my car. :)

wow dude your new to these engines lmao. so 1st mod you do is Intake. you take the entire 3500 intake and throttle body and install it on the 3400. reason being is the 3400 intake from the TB narrows when the 3500 is wide open and can accept a wider throttle body. that TCE you'll never have open throttle cuz the flapper will hit the inside of the intake first. it'll feel normal to the pedal when really you'll have about 25% left but it cant open. the 3500 upper is the same dimensions across all 6 cylinders. I don't think a 3400 upper will take anything larger than a 62mm. lmao your talking about ordering kits and crap lol you need the Plenum (upper intake), the gaskets which are like $10, the throttle body from the 3500. and that's it.

Only been messing with them for 10 years lol. Check out the turbo 3.5 one i built!! lol Funny enough on the stock 3.4 manifold i was doing WOT pulls just fine! but you are right there is not enough material for more then a 65mm. A 3.5 upper is a good one to use i agree! Still need an adapter to use the a compatible throttlebody as they came with electronic ones. So you can't use a 3500 since these cars are cable driven!
