I started watching your vids back in the Trawler days and an impressed with how much you have both grown. I followed a similar path as I started out with an old 30 foot sea ray then moved on to a 40 year old Hatteras 37C then on to a 1972 Hatteras 45C. Each was bought for around $25K and needed upgrades. You hit on it. Budget and prioritize repairs and upgrades.
You guys are lucky you are young and doing it right. You can do much of the work yourselves. Saves a ton. I'm now retired and spending most of my time on my 45 in Ensenada Mexico. Labor is so reasonable I don't have to do it myself.
Love the channel, wish you well and stay safe.

Great video guys! I see a lot of full time CZcams sailors do "how much does it cost" videos, but almost none do any "how we earn our money" vids. This is the real barrier to most people who want to live this lifestyle and could be even more helpful to viewers looking to live their sailing dreams. Most people can probably figure out how to adjust a budget to their needs, but most probably can't figure out how to consistently make money while sailing full time. Thanks again!

Hey guys. Don't pay attention to the negative people. You guys are living the dream. There will always be the jealous people out there wanting to make themselves feel better by talking bad about others. I am hoping to transition over to doing something similar to you guys in a couple years. Only difference is I will be about 30 years older with no experience (I watch to learn from you). Keep up the good work and keep living your dream.

A boat isn’t a financial investment, it’s a depreciating financial asset. You’re doing everything right by maintaining her well and improving her continually. Nevertheless, she’s a liability, not an asset. Don’t fool yourselves and you’ll be good to go. Nicely done.

for your wash, while you're cruising, you can put your laundry, a few pieces at a time, in a nylon mesh bag and tow it behind you, and the oxygen in the water will naturally clean it, then you can hang it from your rigging in a stiff breeze, and it will shake all the salt out of it while it dries.

You can get an orange onion bag and drag it behind your boat in the wake where’s there’s bubbling water and no soap that will clean your clothes and after 20-30 minutes pull it back in and just pour some fabric softener on them and dunk them in fresh water and your clothes will feel and smell like they have been machine washed. I know this works because I used to do this when I was long line tuna fishing and was in my teens and had just started working so had no money to machine wash them. Hopefully this can save you even more money.

Greetings , and congratulations on your new boat!. Regarding your inboard diesels, I have crewed for 10 years on a 43 ' Gary Lidgard performance cruiser cat, mostly in Pacific Mexico. Owner built, the engine compartments are isolated by watertight bulkheads with all mechanical penetrations welll above the waterline near the top of compartments. The builder initially installed a pair of used 3-CYL Yanmars with saildrives. After a few years, trouble with one shift linkage required a rebuild. This is where his planning paid off. I assisted in hoisting the motor off its bed, unbolting the big sail drive gasket, and pulling the sail drive up on deck through the compartment. The skipper did dive to remove the prop. But the whole job was done with the Boat in the water. Of course, the Compartment was flooded, but the motor stayed dry up against the ceiling . There was a little fish swimming around inside for a while.
    Sailing is better than sanding.
    Big Wolfy

Great video! I truly love to watch your adventures and am so grateful for the free content. You're always going to have a few jokers who are bizarrely angry that you make money on youtube and assume you're rolling in six figures a year. I never can understand why others resent someone doing well for themselves. It doesn't matter what you say, they'll judge. Knowing someone involved in social media, while there are some nice perks, it's a LOT of work. Just recording the content and getting good shots and several angles is a lot of work and time consuming. The equipment is costly too. Not to mention the time spent editing! People can't know what they don't know... what are you gonna do? But you two are always positive and grateful and it shows! And I honestly hope you are well paid for your hard work. I love watching and and it's FREE for me! I'm landlocked now, and I'd never get to see or enjoy this beautiful Earth and her gorgeous waterways were it not for youtuber's who take the time to share their adventures. Enjoy yourselves and your lives. You're good people. That goodness will return to you in so many ways. Remember this if you can. Some people will love you, and some people will hate you, and NONE of it, will have anything to do with you. People are in their own head, with their own ideas, and judging the world through their own lens/experience. Be true to yourselves and you will have great success. I'm sending love to you kids and wishes for safety and ease in your travels!✌🏻💕

For insurance, have you looked into DiverDan insurance? It's good for emergencies. We had a friend while crossing from South America to Australia, the husband had a medical emergency. Because they had DiverDan, they came out to the middle of the ocean, picked him up, took him to Australia. His wife stayed with the boat because they didn't want to loose the boat. She sail single handed the rest of the way, but had people on the radio keeping her company. Without DiverDan, he would have died out there. Just a suggestion.

A really good video guys. Budget is really the way to go. CZcams just does not make you money but it is a key to other income. DIY is the way to go on boat maintenance. Buying local and what the locals eat is a top tip. We did a video on the first season costs with the two pooches. This last season was more expensive. However, $14k a year is doable without the internet high speed that you guys need. Hence we posted less and at lower res.... But its not our main income as we are semi retired and share for others not income. As always good to watch and informative. BTW What happened with the sick engine? Sorted?

Just another old guy checking in. I would love to do what you are doing but my wife doesn't like boats so as soon as we can sell our house we're getting a land yacht, and it will cost considerably more than $50,000. That said, I've had this dream for most of my 65 years and I need to do it while I'm still able. What I'm hearing is that you are spending about $3,000 a month living and $2,500 fixing up your boat. Hopefully fixing up your boat will end soon, I know that maintenance won't, but new rigging and so forth are not annual expenses. Keep living the dream and never look back.

When I was much younger and even now, I make my own syrup or srup...how ever you spell it (haha). Next time you’re in the states, or check amazon for a small bottle of imitation maple flavor. I boil one cup of water and dissolve completely two cups of sugar and add one capful of maple flavor. It’s a little thinner than store bought syrup but stores without refrigeration for about 6 months. If all the sugar is not completely dissolved, it may re- crystallize in time but it’s still perfectly usable.
    Happy sailing

Another viewer shared her search on the subject with me and found this -
I guess I'll be watching for 30 seconds, when I can stand it, from now on. Or, I'll just click on the ad and go to the advertiser's page and then jump back to the video. That might be faster and I think they get their best money for clicks. If it's something I don't desire to support, at all, I won’t click.
Anyway, the search revealed this info for CZcams creators:
It is important to remember, however, that you are not going to earn money simply because the ads are there. How many times have you clicked on straight past an ad when watching a video yourself. Viewers have to actively interact in some way with an ad for it to earn you money.
      Your ad options are:
Display ads beside your video - you will be paid either when a viewer sees or clicks on the ad, at the advertiser’s discretion
Overlay ads (small ads at the bottom of a video) - you only get paid if a viewer clicks on the ad to expand it
Skippable video ads (ads at the start of a video that a viewer can skip after five seconds) - you get paid if a viewer watches the whole ad (or at least 30 seconds if it’s longer). These are the most common type of CZcams ad.
Non-skippable video ads (ads at the start which viewers can’t skip over) and Bumper ads (short ads at the start of a video on mobile) - you get paid if a viewer watches an entire ad
Mid-roll ads (ads in the middle of a longer video) - payment depends, but usually, a viewer has to watch an entire ad for at least 30 seconds)
Be careful if you are tempted to use non-skippable ads. You need to have built up a dedicated audience who love you first. Most people do not have the patience to sit through a non-skippable ad unless they have a real desire to see the video.
      An important point to remember.
You won’t get paid just because you have ads on your videos. Your viewers have to actively watch your ads! BUT, most viewers skip ads! So you need high numbers of viewers first, to have enough of them bothering to click on your ads.

Medi-share or a similar health share group would work great for you guys. When mom was dealing with cancer we were extremely pleased with the level of service. And there were a lot of bills... I do believe you pay up front for services and they reimburse, but the payout if very quick and efficient. Low rates too. Definitely worth looking at. Love the vids

Very informative. I have always wanted to live on a live aboard. Something always keeps me from my goal. The house thing is just getting to be a drag with the cost of everything never ending. I want less and my goal is to go back to the beach life. I miss that the most. I'll be watching you on your epic journeys and for now live life through your eyes. And yes I would defentely suport your channel.

Thank you for this video and the breakdown of costings. I've been thinking about this as an alternative way of living. Great example for me to show my near 19 year old son as a different way of living and travelling.

Seems like a good deal on that catamaran. The dingy engine was outright theft over $3k and only 20hp! You can buy a brand new small block chevy for that!

A boat is a depreciating asset that will consume 80% of your time and $$ repairing, upgrading, replacing, stripping, sanding, painting, electronics, solar, batteries, repower, sails, and whatever is left is spent sailing and having fun. The old adage is true. A boat is a hole in the water you throw money and time into.

Great video. We (I) watch every one, by every sailor to learn. And it's needed. The fun videos the last decade are what attracts, the educational reality is what makes the goal available. In the next decade, the pioneers have already made the mistakes and gained the experience. That makes anyone with future plans safer, and that goal more attainable. Big thanks to you and all that paid their dues and sacrificed to help the rest of us. Tip my hat to you.

Anybody out there that call you trust fund babies haven't watched all your videos. The two of you have to be the hardest working sailors on YT. If there was anyone that has EARNED what they have- it is the two (or three, Hi Jetty!) of you. You bought right, put sweat equity into each step of the way and were rewarded for your hard work. I predict you will have 200+K subscribers by the end of the year. You deserve it.
    Stay safe out there!

This is an insightful video! You two gave a lot of very personal financial information. Really good information! It was pretty interesting. You two have done videos like this before, I think. My memory is so bad. I could be wrong. Sailing and having a life like yours is a dream for a lot of us. I know you two put a lot of hard work into it. I know that it's not all pleasure. I've been following your channel for about 2 years now and seen some of the crazy hard work you guys put into your boat. Plus, I done some binge watching of your older videos from years ago, and your more recent historical videos that you put out. I love these videos and they give me an escape from the craziness of life, especially now with the Covid-19 outbreak. I took a few days off from work because some of my coworkers are acting up with fear of contracting this virus. It was more than I could stand so I'm home right now for a couple extra days. I'm a government worker required to continue working. I was suppose to transfer and move to the Palm Beach area, but this virus has put a hold on this plan. Anyways, Love your adventures and seeing Jetty! Hopefully, Sierra, you can get back to Adrenaline soon. I can't imagine Billy sailing her on his own to the US Virgin Islands. Please stay safe, Billy! Keep Jetty safe, too! All the best, you 3!

Thank you so so much for the honesty and senserity in this video. It really helped me personally. I have no intention of starting a CZcams channel, but I recently put my house up for sale (last Wednesday) and when it sells I'm moving aboard my 50 year old trawler. I am also planing on living on the hook. Although from what I'm hearing it's becoming more and more difficult in areas like Florida, Georgia and the Carolina's. But I'm still going to try. My motto it's easier to apoligize for making a mistake then ask permission and be denied! Thanks Billy & Sierra truly a great video!
