PS: all considered (budget, time, lighting etc...) I prefer your video much better than the Kelloggs one! Yours is way more touching because its about your daughter and the kelloggs commercial has a shocking camera in the very first frame on the bottom left corner of the frame. As a professional photographer I noticed that straight away. I guess the camera has been erased when they aired the kelloggs commercial! As a swimmer, I also loved the phrase with the butterfly. I totally love your video all around!
"I had no lighting, all run & gun, 10 minutes until the lifeguard leaves... think I did pretty good." Dave you f*ckin' crushed it, my guy! Bravo. I swear you have superhuman modesty. A pretty rare trait in an Absolute Champion, like yourself ;)
Thanks for the mention, but more importantly, VERY WELL DONE! You can nit pick yourself to death on these, but honestly, I got engaged in the visuals and story (hooked) right at the beginning, my attention was kept, I got the "message" and what the "ad" was for in the first 15 seconds, nothing pulled me out of it, and it kept my attention throughout. Looks great even with the parameters you had to deal with, and, if your "client" was happy about it, I'd say you win the "I created a successful commercial" award. Great job!
This is Amazing! I'm a Subscriber on the Basic Filmmaker Channel, and I just ran across Dave Dugdale's Channel. Dave mentions Basic Filmmaker's Tips On Creating A Commercial. So I Subscribe to Dave's Channel and Thumb Up his video, before heading over to Basic Filmmaker to gain some more insight on creating a commercial. CZcams is where it's at!
I think you did a brilliant job. You are an excellent filmmaker. Great tutor. Humble and always willing to learn. Kudos to you.
Regardless of some of the critiques below, given the stage of things you did an outstanding job. I think if you were to pursue a career in this industry you have demonstrated hands down your potential, good job... Q
Thanks!
Im a young teen wanting to go into advert making. How's the pay? And is it as fun as what it seems?
I've shots a lot of production stills, so I am on a lot of sets, thus I see a lot from experienced people, but you sir did an amazing job, your final production, thumbs up
Thanks!
Great job for the first one!!! Without all the high powered lights and gadget you got the message across!
You're an inspiration and I love you relationship to the audience when you talk to the camera. Keep it up Dave
I watched Dave since his days of figuring out what the buttons on his T2i do. Needless to say, its awesome how much he has grown. Just proves that with hard work you can achieve anything. Well done Dave!
Great job Dave! And thanks for being generous in sharing your experience.
I have to say that this is one of the best commercials I've seen, and I'm in the business. Who cares the colour-correcting and what not... the message is greatly delivered. Amazing job for run'n'gun man, great sound as well.
I can't even explain how much your videos have helped me Dave! They have saved me a lot of time I would have spend researching things that you could explain in a matter of minutes! Please continue doing what you are doing :D
I love how well you shared your ideas... a natural teacher... : )
Great commercial and video on it! The fact that it was run & gun truly adds to the magic you've created!
Dave, love your videos and love your heart with what/how you do. Thanks for taking the time to share what and how you learn! Keep it up!
love that Commercial Dave !!!
Your commercial wasn't bad at all for having not done one before. If fact, I think it's better than commercials I've seen produced by some people who have been in the for years. I produce local commercials, promotional videos, corporate videos, etc. for a living here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Well done Dave! Keep up the great work!
Mr. Dave, this is one of the most realistic video and explains the absolute ground reality of making a no budget video. Thank you so much for sharing such a honest video... Loved it.
Glad it was helpful!
BABA your first commercial is great love it!
Dave, this video is very well done. You have incredible vision and leadership... you're learning and teaching at the same time! I love your vids.
Thanks for always being so honest, as always good job.
It's really great. Thanks for being so candid.
Some really nice shots in there! And a good, simple story.
I was an ad copywriter/producer for about 7 years before I went full-time in video production, so I'm familiar with the process. And honing in on ONE simple message is one of the most difficult things to do.
One of the things to note about the Kellogg's ad apart, that spending a little more time in post can kick up your spot even more, is sound design - the splashes, the crowd, the foot stepping on the board, the underwater gurgles, etc. A lot of it is very subtle, but can make a HUGE difference.
Anyhoo, for a first commercial, this is 1000 times better than most local spots you see on the air.
Great video. Dave these talk throughs of your experiences on various projects are so helpful. Thank you so much for doing these.
Thanks Dave, really enjoyed your commercial, it's given me the confidence to take on more of this type of work. I took a look at The Basic Film Maker video you recommended, wow great tips there. Thanks again for taking the time in sharing all this with us, cheers, Mark
Short, simple but straight to the point. Good concept.
This was fantastic great mixture of camera shots and emotion used in it
Love the script your daughter made it very heart warming.
Impressed. Much to learn, and really appreciate you sharing your experience here!
Excellent Dave. I learn so much from your stuff, thanks for sharing your talent.
Great Video Dave Dugdale!
I actually like the commercial for it being a run and gun shoot. It's always impressive when a filmmaker/cinematographer creates a great product out of something that was done under limitations.
Commercial looks great, I love your down to earth attitude, to me that shows
you're a great filmmaker!
Another awesome work Dave!
Thank you! I have to make a 30 sec ad to be projected on a drive in theater screen on Friday, so talk about ran and gun! This was inspiring, and good timeless content.
Thanks Dave! As you said yourself, it has been a great learning experience for yourself! The result frankly, was great! We can be so destructive with being too critical of our own work. You will get faster. Very few people know what colour grading is, fewer seem to appreciate it!
It is a really amazing video with such limited resources. I am hooked. The ideas are brilliant.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video Dave. I appreciate the tips!
Great job Dave love this. It not easy to make a good commercial. Thanks for all the good info.
Great job and awesome work. I am taking on the same journey for my first 30 sec commercial. Thanks for the tips.
Nice job Dave. As a Creative Director who concepted national TV spots a couple suggestions. I would have spaced out the audio. Goggles.Check to Goggles.... Check. And the end logo was somewhat lost up in the right corner with black type on a dark background. Should have made it larger, centered, simpler background - more readable. Never let design hurt readability.
Thanks for the ideas!
I would like to add to the logo comment. Widescreen is great, and while most of us have widescreen monitors and TVs, not all of us do. If the client wanted to put this on TV, any audience member still using a standard def TV or who only have standard def channels would not see any or all of the logo. Local broadcast stations will not resize your video to fit their format, they'll simply cut the sides off and that visual information is lost.
Jorie Tappa jodie nobody wants to hear about ur 3rd world problems. 16x9 is fine
Jorie Tappa - Actually 4:3 TV will correct for 16:9, it will just have black bars.
I would love for you to critique my work.
Fantastic job! The visuals were great. It left me wanting more... that's a good thing.
Great job and thank you for sharing your source research as well. I watched all of it.
I love your commercial! you are sooooo talented! thanks for sharing!
Just starting to learn how to shoot our own products (still and video). Your videos are a huge inspiration. Thanks so much.
I love seeing you and your work grow. Im on the same path and you're an inspiration. keep it up.
holy crap, people are critiquing???? that was fanTAStic!!! very moving, very touching. and clever too! I was blown away
OMG that is a FANTASTIC commercial dude.
Great job! I got the story behind it. Visuals were awesome. Very good for a 1st attempt. Can only get better from here.
I think your video is awesome!! Your daughter is very lucky to have a dad who is willing to spend time with her and doing great stuff like videos for her.
Thanks!
GREAT JOB DAVE! Love it! Congratulations!
That was a great commercial! Very well done.
That was amazingly done. Awesome. Im currently in film school, and hope to start doing my own productions.
Awesome spot, Dave! Looks like it could be on national TV!
Awesome work Dave.
Great work, Dave!
This is terrific! It gave me an idea for a friend of mine who is a running coach. Thanks.
Great video as always Dave, thanks for sharing.
Good job! I like the fact you edited in slow motion to give it a soft comfortable feeling along with the choice of background music. Your shots were great! I am also learning commercial shooting and have done a few. I've learned a storyboard is KEY! I need to work on my lighting and what lens's are best for what scenes. You will only get better if you continue learning =).
The Commercial was great!! don't worry about the technical details. I loved the commercial!
Great work Dave!! Been following you for a few years now. You've come a long way. I've dabbled in a few of those myself. Building my own video editing "Monster" PC this summer! Thanks for the guidance on how you built yours.
Well done Dave, for someone who's apparently never made a commercial it looks really professional!
Great project. It's the things we're passionate about that come out the best. With digital cameras I'd forgotten how important white balance is, thanks for reminding me.
You did a great job. Congrats on finishing it. Small critique though. I heard much much more about why you couldn't make it look like the Kellogg commercial than I heard what you actually learned / takeaways from your own experience shooting a 30 sec spot. Thank you for posting this though!
Awesome Commercial and Video Elaboration as well Dave. I thoroughly enjoyed it sir. 🙂
Honestly, this looked amazing for how little time and equipment you had. You made the best of what you had. If I didn't know the behind the scenes aspect, I would have thought you had all the time and equipment you needed to make this commercial. But I don't have that professional eye like you though. It also goes to show those who can't afford all the filming gear that you can still make amazing work without it. :D
Hey I have a random question and/or a weird question... I'm a fairly good color grader but, I can't seem to understand how to capture that "tv commercial look" (Warm, High Key, Etc.).. Could you possibly help me out? Your commercial looks exactly like what I was going for so any tips on picture style, color corrections, etc.. would be great!
Nice job explaining your experience and good information on other sites to visit. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Dave are you Kidding! That was an Excellent Job considering all that you were up against. I'm glad that I found your channel. I have a project that is along the same vein as your commercial, and now I'm inspired! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the channel, because I'm a Subscriber. I'll keep you posted on the final outcome of my project and I'll be checking out some of your other videos. Be well, stay encouraged, and an Encourager!
Great video. I'm a photojournalist trying to learn video so I admire how far you have come with it. I'm very stuck with editing skills.
Looks great Dave! Awesome!
Great job Dave!
I personally think you sell yourself WAY too short on this one! MOST everyday people are not going to see all the "little" things that you do and I understand that you want it to be absolutely perfect BUT........My opinion is that it is absolutely perfect the way it is! When I watched it, I was amazed at how good it really was. I was expecting obvious and horrible quality and mistakes but none visible to me on my first run through watching it. It was just beautiful and conveyed exactly what you wanted to. Now, if I was to watch it over and over and nit pick it, I'm sure I could find things but I say.....what's REALLY important? The message! It was beautifully done and conveyed exactly what you described! Kudos on a job well done!
Excellent 30sec commercial, I believe a successful commercial consist of grabbing the audience attention, invoking emotion and communicating the idea. You nailed all three. I try extremely hard not to get lost in the overly technical side of production because that usually kills the story. Its a fine balance and one that's learned with time. I find most who criticize are other videographers and film-makers who only look for the technical mistakes and not the story. Thanks for sharing another great experience!
Thanks! Having a good "story" is a great place to start and allows people to see past the mistakes.
Excellent job Dave, if i saw that commercial on tv.. i wouldn't be able to tell that it wasn't done by some huge production company!
As always, great video and great lesson Dave. Keep it up! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your experience. It really helped me a lot on making decisions on how to put everything together.
Glad it was helpful!
This video is awesome! I'm shooting mine soon and I'll remember some of the things you mentioned. Thank you!
You did a great job! Don't be so hard on yourself!
Great job! You did amazing with such little amount of time and resources.
Professionally done! Your commercial triggered the same kind of emotion as the kellog's commercial. And just you and your limited resources versus the big budget commercial. Granted, you learned from the big budget commercial which even had a behind the scenes spot. Big budgets productions are great for great visual. But it goes to show, indie dudes like you can create something good visually and trigger emotion. You have a knack for this!
I guess since I've watched this quite a few times since you posted. I should say great video and I enjoyed it a lot. Watch all the time and long time subscriber.
Great commercial, I loved it. Got to admit, considering all the problems you presented, it looks really good. Thanks for the quick lesson.
great job Dave!!
really nice. I really like the most is the timing of sounds/music. really great
The commercial was awesome!! Very impressive.
That's an awesome ad Dave Dugdale .
Great Job Dave. Sure it may not be exactly the way you would have liked it to be technically but really the only people who will care about that are photographers and videographer. The more important thing is the message and the feeling and you did a great job getting that across.
This is absolutely awesome Dave ! love it !
Well done, Dave!
Great commercial Dave! Thanks also for sharing your thoughts and problems you had with it. It doesn't look like "run & gun", small production yes, but not cheap.
Cheers :-)
Your 30 sec commercial is very good, pro look. Well done!
This is awesome thank you for this im,currently creating a commercial and your commercial is aweosome and great work and awesome content!!
This is brilliant - and very inspirational! You've created an advert that sits perfectly alongside any TV advert for quality. I'm new to videography and your tutorials and discussions are worth their weight in gold, so thanks for posting this!!
On a purely technical note, I'm assuming that the underwater footage was all done with the GoPro? Certainly beats spending a ton of cash on a waterproof case for the SLR! Thanks again
Great job! You captured emotion and that is a key element!
Nice and insightful, I think you're pretty fortunate to get such a good result with such limited time filming and working with the voice talent. Really like the final result though!
In the process of creating my first commercial and this was so helpful, thanks so much! Gonna check out the Basic Filmmakers video you mentioned. Btw, great job on the commercial!
Nice work Dave!
Good job! I think you really brought the message over and regarding the time was given it is very well done
love the music for your commercial
Awesome ad for so little time and money into it. Could not have been better for the effort you were able to do. Excellent. Inspiring even.
Thanks!
Dave I thought. It came out spectacular!
